2. Qat – a flowering plant native to East Africa and the Arabian peninsula.
3. Zax – a slater or slate mason, or the tool used to cut and punch nail holes in roofing slate.
4. Cwm – a valley, especially one created by glacial movement. Be warned: this one won’t get you many points, but it is good for using up pesky, low-score consonants taking up valuable space on your rack.
5. Xu – Vietnamese money
6. Qua – as or as being, or in the character of.
7. Suq – a market, or part of a market, in an Arab city.
8. Adz – an axe-like tool.
9. Jo – sweetheart or dear
10. Qadi – a judge in the Muslim community. - dcmcderm, on 08/28/2008, -1/+68"To quone something" - Cosmo Kramer

Cuum. - voyetra8, on 08/29/2008, -2/+21It's lame that Scrabble picks random foreign words for inclusion, yet, when I used all my tiles on "areolas" in a game a year ago, it was challenged, and it wasn't in the damn Scrabble dictionary.
I think the game is less about vocabulary and more about memorizing the Scrabble dictionary. - DelayedEraser, on 08/29/2008, -0/+19it's because the plural of areola is areolae, not areolas. nice try though! i'd have probably thought the same thing (i had to look it up just now to be sure)
- PGPirate, on 08/29/2008, -0/+18Cwm - really thats a word with no vowels?

- Wormfather, on 08/29/2008, -1/+10In her defense, you can use a blank for the other Z and end up with 24 points, while my wizards only yeilds 20 points.

- manifestdata, on 08/29/2008, -1/+7So I just need to use runes and runewords from Diablo II. Who knew!?!?!?

- zionKing, on 08/29/2008, -0/+6If you had a 75 point word but playing it meant you had to form the word AA incidentally... wouldn't that be a good time to know AA is a word?
- voyetra8, on 08/29/2008, -0/+6Actually, it looks like they have added it to the dictionary. Sweet vindication!
AREOLA
(AREOLAS/AREOLAE)
a small space in a network of leaf veins -- AREOLAR/AREOLATE - JFallon126, on 08/29/2008, -0/+6It's Welsh. (And in the OED)
- NJank, on 08/29/2008, -0/+6proper name.
- teethandeyes, on 08/29/2008, -0/+5Learn all your two letter words and you will instantly be able to beat most of your friends and family.
- NJank, on 08/29/2008, -1/+6if there's one thing I'm worried about, it's valuable space on your rack.
- nate263, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5That sounds a little like a This American Life story.
- Narcism, on 08/29/2008, -0/+5On the board? What about in everyone's face?
- Wormfather, on 08/29/2008, -0/+5Wrong, scrabble is often one and lost with the use of two letter words, more often though it's that bingo on the TW or that Z or Q on the TL that sink the competition.
The key for me is always to try and build a lead of 100 pts, demoralize the opponent and then ***** block all the TW and TL. If that doesnt work, I occupy their country. - sepllcehck, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4While this list can help you win - it really isn't that helpful for a normal player.
The real secret is to score at least 12-20 a turn and understanding the very special situations where that rule doesn't apply.
Something like this :
http://www.yak.net/kablooey/scrabble/vowelHeavy.ht ...
and this
http://www.trussel.com/scrabble/2words.htm
are far more helpful at winning at scrabble. The big scorers don't make much of a difference so long as you can get rid of your "bad" tiles faster. The more tiles you see - the greater your chances at a bingo or large scoring tile. Also - recognize one letter plays that can net you 20-30 points is wise. -
