- Surferess, on 05/19/2008, -54/+35This is truly awesome!
- chiefbttlwshr, on 05/19/2008, -22/+6Just hit digg and move on.
- psylemon, on 05/19/2008, -27/+5looks pretty useless to me...
- sadisticmind, on 05/20/2008, -13/+6Your mom was pretty awesome.
*took me months to come up with that - sanman, on 05/20/2008, -13/+3one day all opinions will be expressed in sexual metaphors
(ok, that day was years ago. anyways...) - uhhNo, on 05/20/2008, -16/+2***** thing SUCKS!
actually, the part at the end with it making 1 big image from many many smaller ones is pretty cool, but the rest is so-so.
- superjunaid, on 05/19/2008, -54/+76Yeah seadragon is amazing, but the spacial arrangement that Photosynth handles is just amazing, I've known of this technology for atleast 2 years.
- AtomicTheory, on 05/20/2008, -43/+10Oh yea? Well I've known about it for 7, yea read it SEVEN, years.
"Why seven", you ask? I figured since we were both making up ***** numbers concerning how long we've "known of this technology" then I'd pick a less obvious choice than "yours plus one" (3). - mediaphile, on 05/20/2008, -2/+34It's not really *****. Photosynth has been out for a long time now, available to download for free. It was all over Digg and everywhere else when it came out.

"made popular 1 year 295 days ago" - Maver1c, on 05/20/2008, -2/+13Don't really see why you are being dugg down. All you did was praise the technology and mention how old it is. I saw this on digg around 2 years ago also, but even if I hadn't I wouldn't digg you down for telling me that it isn't new.
- defaultdigger, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I hate to be the guy shouting 'OLD!!!'...
...but this is old.
- AtomicTheory, on 05/20/2008, -43/+10Oh yea? Well I've known about it for 7, yea read it SEVEN, years.
- nitesoulja, on 05/19/2008, -121/+12it looks cool but its not practical, its like all other microsoft crap like flip 3d and aero... theres no point for this, why not just use pdf or something else to view images...
- bagboyrebel, on 05/20/2008, -1/+42the point isn't necessarily that there is an immediate reason to use this other than the fact that it is cool. However, if we didn't have people in the computer industry trying things like this then there never would be any innovation.
- TicoTico, on 05/20/2008, -10/+2And then MS acquires your technology
- mohamedmansour, on 05/20/2008, -1/+9Even if MS acquires your technology, your the person who discovered it using what they have done, hence research. IF they acquired you, they obviously paid you, and you still have the possiblity to work for them on your project (like every other aquired startup), plus your name would be the person who invented the innovation. They don't steal your ideas, they buy it from you so they can own it.
- TicoTico, on 05/20/2008, -10/+2And then MS acquires your technology
- mcduck, on 05/20/2008, -1/+24"why not just use pdf or something else to view images..."
PDF for images? You really must have too much time on your hands. - ObeseEurotrash, on 05/20/2008, -3/+17The only thing I use PDFs for are to wipe my ass, yes and I mean on the computer screen.
- Esstee, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1LMAO!

I have anti-virus detect them and delete on sight.

- over900000, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5At least it's more useful than that Mac thingy where you scroll through all the icons. CoverFlow.
- kickelephant, on 05/20/2008, -2/+1piclense, you mean? I love it.
- WallnutBoy, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Piclens != CoverFlow, albeit very similar.

- w3v3, on 05/19/2008, -5/+4Your sentence confuses me... If you think it's not cool though, present us with something technological you have created that beats that.
- rrbest, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Does one have to create something better in order to have an opinion on whether something is cool or not?
- w3v3, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1No, that is a good point, because if that were the case I would be a major offender, but it would be interesting to know why that is his opinion...

- Stonekeeper, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1This tech is older than that. I did a talk on this in 1993/94 (i can't remember). SeaDragon is just an implementation of multi resolution images, which can be done easily using quad-trees. Very old tech, implemented well with new tech.

Second - not the same technology.
Dragon is photo search engine, with intelligence, that matches up images together giving you something like a street view like googles maps. But... - AlphaDrake, on 05/19/2008, -6/+9Some of this tech is a few years old (SeaDragon or CDragon) has been available on the internet for quite a while...
- pr0t0, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I'm not sure if it's the same thing or not, but judging by what I heard, it looks like the technology behind this is similar to an animation technology I saw about 8-10 years ago.
I don't remember the company, but they argued it was simpler and faster to control the color of every pixel on the screen at any given moment, than it was to calculate wire frames, textures, shading, light sources, etc. They had a demo of simple looking jets flying in formation and occasionally doing barrel rolls as a proof of concept.
Of course, that was a decade ago. Video tech has advanced considerably since then so I don't know if it still holds true, especially for things like gaming. But for static images, maybe.
- pr0t0, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I'm not sure if it's the same thing or not, but judging by what I heard, it looks like the technology behind this is similar to an animation technology I saw about 8-10 years ago.
- LanceUppercut, on 05/20/2008, -9/+24This is really pretty cool. It doesn't work so well on the web, you need silverlight installed: http://memorabilia.hardrock.com/
I dicked around with it for a while with the seadragon installer, but didn't do much with it after that. I am sure the technology would rock for the web if most americans could get a data pipe bigger than Dick Cheney's urethra.- miketrash, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Well if you look at deep zoom (the tech used at the hardrock site) it uses much less bandwidth than you would think. You have to process the images before using them and it chops, sizes and tiles them over and over...gets down to some 1x1 images. When a client actually views the silverlight app it only loads whats needed as you zoom or pan.
- LanceUppercut, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I understand what you mean, I totally get that the deep zoom composer renders multiple renders for each individual tile at different resolutions and streams them from the web server. The point is that it is nowhere near seamless through the net. I threw together a picture that was composed of 20 10 megapixel shots of Kauai and it was extremely speedy locally, but when you try to host it on the web and show it to someone it isn't nearly as seamless because you can't really control how fast someone wishes to zoom in, and bandwidth just isn't there to load on demand in essentially real time.
- mohamedmansour, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Yea, I saw that 2 nights ago. The code is fairly simple, http://blogs.msdn.com/expression/archive/2008/03/0 ...
BUT that doesn't use photosynth, the thing about photosynth (which msft released 2 years ago), it automatically meshes all related photo in a big mesh so that you can see a bigger photo where all photos are linked. That is pretty impressive how they thought about the speed and photo generation.
But to design the zoom feature that they have done, take a look at deep zoom composer for WPF C#, and you can implement the same feature on your application but there is no photolinking. - dig1x, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1What trouble are you having, it operates on the web just like was shown in that TED demonstration.
What do you mean " It doesn't work so well on the web"
Works awesome here. - sosgal721, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1It will work fine by itself, but let's say if you have it with other things... like a site made entirely out of Silverlight, it crashes.
I have worked with it, the past 20 weeks for a project at school, too many bugs...
- miketrash, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Well if you look at deep zoom (the tech used at the hardrock site) it uses much less bandwidth than you would think. You have to process the images before using them and it chops, sizes and tiles them over and over...gets down to some 1x1 images. When a client actually views the silverlight app it only loads whats needed as you zoom or pan.
- demondo, on 05/20/2008, -6/+8You can play with similar (the same?) technology now using Silverlight! Just go to http://memorabilia.hardrock.com/
- Cimlite, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Wow... that's the first time I've been impressed by anything Silverlight has had to offer.
- Miscellaneous, on 05/20/2008, -3/+36Porn on this would be amazing!
But the social implications could be disastrous, i can see people getting addicted to this. I think I'm just talking about myself.- Acharne, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2You really want to be able to zoom in on girls and see all the imperfections?
I'll stick with my regular definition porn!- WoundedTownsmen, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Yeah totally. Just imagine how gross a real naked girl would look like, you're talking at least Hi def * 5
- shitthisfook, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3This would make my computer addiction so much worse. I dread the day it finally arrives.
- megahan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4I congratulate you on your forward thinking. It's entrepeneurs like you that have given us the wheel, the lightbulb and free porn video. May God bless you!
- Acharne, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2You really want to be able to zoom in on girls and see all the imperfections?
- tomazkovacic, on 05/20/2008, -6/+10Metacafe spam!
This thing is soooooooo old. - Baronvontito1, on 05/20/2008, -11/+80Say what you will about Microsoft, but they recruit some truly brilliant people and groups.
- Locuester, on 05/20/2008, -11/+8Such brilliant people and groups should do a better job of making people see or use this year old technology. Can't wait to watch this video again next year!
- pensel, on 05/20/2008, -2/+1And they will never use it for anything productive or bring it to consumers in a meaningful way that we'll remember it as anything more than a YouTube video.
Microsoft is so dreamy. - Texmurphy01, on 05/20/2008, -1/+5I think, as he stated, they BUY some truly brilliant stuff. What visionaries.
- YonicSouth, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1by "recruit" I think you meant they "buy" brilliant people and groups that used to be their own company.
- SamOut, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0Yeah, I've heard some companies do that. Not sure if it's just a rumor!
- DucoNihilum, on 05/20/2008, -3/+10This sort of blew my mind.... more than a year ago.... when TED actually happen and this hit digg for the first time.....
- oMeSSiaHo, on 05/20/2008, -4/+5This video is a year old (the date is on the video) and you can use the software now. I would have hoped there would be more development in a year but I imagine this is a very intense undertaking.
- Arkons24, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4Funny enough my roommate works on this software. Really cool stuff.
- kbo84, on 05/20/2008, -1/+0if your roommate was working on this software he probably wouldnt have to stay in your dorm room.
- Oea420, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2I can see this being the next step in computerized mapping and GPS screens...
- Vassili84, on 05/20/2008, -4/+78but can it run crysis...............................100 times?
- Amadeus2490, on 05/20/2008, -2/+11It can run Crysis OVER 9000 times.
- Ezxen, on 05/20/2008, -4/+2OVER 9000!
- pensel, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1How many years will it take for this parent comment to sound hilariously short-sighted in the context of current processing power?
- daza, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I'd give it 5 years.
- izikdela, on 05/20/2008, -5/+23What blows my mind about this is how old this video is and why it is just getting featured like it's something new.
Whatever, I guess it's good if no one has seen it by now. - UtopiaInTheSky, on 05/20/2008, -1/+7Damn, I wanted him to zoom in on the fractal (at the top left).
- bryanricker, on 05/20/2008, -7/+75That technology DID blow my mind.
Now if only they can make a technology that will blow my penis, I'm all set.- ddawggin, on 05/20/2008, -0/+11Evolution took care of that a LONG time ago. It's called the female.
- fxu1989, on 05/20/2008, -0/+15I have only found females who want to blow my money away.
I'm just kidding. I have never found a female, and I'm poor.
- fxu1989, on 05/20/2008, -0/+15I have only found females who want to blow my money away.
- ddawggin, on 05/20/2008, -0/+11Evolution took care of that a LONG time ago. It's called the female.
- To0pak, on 05/20/2008, -6/+0were they using vectors to resize the images?
- VanD, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4hahaha fail.
They are all still raster.
- VanD, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4hahaha fail.
- RodgerE1, on 05/20/2008, -10/+5Old!
- SoupNoZi, on 05/20/2008, -8/+3Whats up with all the old/duplicate stories on digg lately?
- vanza001, on 05/20/2008, -10/+5NEW TECHNOLOGY IS NEW
- Igei, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2That is some cool stuff.
- LoudMusic, on 05/20/2008, -9/+15*THIS* is what I've been waiting for leading programmers to make. This is what makes computers totally kick ass. The iPhone is 'neat'. The Wii is 'neat'. Electric cars are 'neat'. Going to the Moon is 'neat' ... well that's more than 'neat'. But this - this is amazing.
- Peko, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Calling this pic technology more amazing than the moon landing?!?
- 5teady, on 05/20/2008, -3/+2Its not just your mind this technology will blow.
- virtorio, on 05/20/2008, -9/+81Good old Microsoft. They create some amazing stuff in the lab that they never bother to actually implement into to any of their products.
- gyrfalcon, on 05/20/2008, -42/+4Will all you stupid a$$ diggers just shut up and stop posing lame ass news? Microsoft sucks and although the technology is slightly innovative, it was ripped off by acquiring and actually innovative company that created it.
Beyond being "cool" if you payed any attention you would have seen it brought up on Slashdot.org and Digg about 2 years ago.
Just go back to wanking off on facebook or youtube and get off digg.
/END OF RANT.- MarioWhereRu, on 05/20/2008, -2/+15WHAT?1?!?!
APPLE FANBOYS ON DIGG?NEVER!- alienunknown, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4Ahhhh I use apple products and I could never understand why everyone here says mac owners are smug. Then I went into a mac forum recently and some guy was talking about how he wouldn't date anyone that did not use a mac... yea, i know. wtf?
I think the next computer I get won't be a mac lol.
- alienunknown, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4Ahhhh I use apple products and I could never understand why everyone here says mac owners are smug. Then I went into a mac forum recently and some guy was talking about how he wouldn't date anyone that did not use a mac... yea, i know. wtf?
- MarioWhereRu, on 05/20/2008, -2/+15WHAT?1?!?!
- directedition, on 05/20/2008, -8/+9Yeah, good old microsoft, buying up all the companies that have good ideas.
- dig1x, on 05/20/2008, -6/+3Had to find some ***** to slam MS over this didnt you.
Oh look, here it is:
http://memorabilia.hardrock.com/
And, as has been said, it is a part of the available API / SDK, so you can do with it as you'd like.
So, yeah, you're talking out of your ass.- justcallmejim, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2WRONG. I can't do with it as I'd like. Its license prohibits just that.
- jhaks, on 05/20/2008, -2/+3Sea Dragon is being implemented in commercial products. Photosynth is of course the obvious one but the ability to take advantage of the technology has been integrated into Silverlight 2. For Silverlight I think they are calling it Deep Zoom. If I'm not mistaken it can also create panoramas by doing correct visual distortion on panoramic images. Check out Hard Rock Cafe's use of Silverlight 2 and Deep Zoom.
- gyrfalcon, on 05/20/2008, -42/+4Will all you stupid a$$ diggers just shut up and stop posing lame ass news? Microsoft sucks and although the technology is slightly innovative, it was ripped off by acquiring and actually innovative company that created it.
- crazyjake, on 05/20/2008, -7/+1that would be incredibly useful when we have computers and internet access in our brains... so much easier to run from the cops.... not like i have ever needed to... *shifty eyes*
- wontstoptalking, on 05/20/2008, -2/+5I was actually expecting something sarcastic....but this is incredible.
- Kamacurus, on 05/20/2008, -10/+4WOW that is nice, i think... Vista crashed while trying to watch it :p
- Kamacurus, on 05/20/2008, -5/+2what? vista is crap
- khrome23, on 05/20/2008, -3/+12This is an old vid, but I'm still digging it. :-D
- TravisOnPhonics, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Why? That doesn't make sense. This why duplicate stories get to the front page repeatedly.
- khrome23, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Obviously some people haven't heard about it. TED isn't exactly in the mainstream.
- kinggimped, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Is there a date on this video? Because I'm almost 100% sure that this is at least 2 years old. I remember picking up the link from a forum a while back and being blown away by it all, but second time around it seems a bit... well... yeah.
When will they actually be implementing any of this 'mind-blowing' technology?- MarioWhereRu, on 05/20/2008, -1/+0Maybe when you shut the hell up.
- kinggimped, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Oooh, big man. Let me buy you a pack of gum, you can show me how to chew it.
- MarioWhereRu, on 05/20/2008, -1/+0Maybe when you shut the hell up.
