so you're saying a lot of people are going to have explosive diarrhea after realizing what they have done? - inactive, on 12/05/2008, -10/+313I usually enjoy a fast RIM job, but this one just left a bad taste in my mouth. RIM really left a gaping hole of a problem with the OS. Hopefully they'll be able to give some much needed hand relief to the touchscreen problems.
- mindpuzzle, on 12/05/2008, -11/+209RIM rushed this one
- nottanner, on 12/05/2008, -27/+207The article gave no actual reasons the phone is poor. There was a brief mention of the OS but nothing substantial.
Why quote the two biggest apple fanboy tech journalists as valid sources anyways? Of course they'll hate the phone. - pezholio, on 12/05/2008, -20/+181No WiFi = Immediate fail
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 12/05/2008, -22/+180That's cute. The article's category is not only "phones," but also "unsexy."
I wish all my products were differentiated simply by "unsexy" and "sexy." It is exactly what I am looking for when researching a product. - TheDeuce53, on 12/05/2008, -42/+192Wasn't the iPhone buggy just after its release and 3G release? Let em get some feedback and throw in some updates before we trash the idea.
I mean, all this article really does is site apple fan-boy David Pogue's public flaying of the phone and his cherry-picked comments to support his opinion. Don't forget, Roger Ebert called Caddyshack "written rather loosely" in his initial review.
Oh wait, this isn't an apple product, my bad. This is a worthless piece of *****. ***** the blackberry storm. - slcseifist, on 12/05/2008, -16/+112Yeah, and you can't even copy+paste. What kind of crumby, second-rate pda won't let you copy+paste.
- Valisk61, on 12/05/2008, -0/+83I think setting up a bacon-wrapped hotdog stall is a recession-proof business proposition!
- enclaved, on 12/05/2008, -1/+65There's always money in the bacon-wrapped hotdog stand.
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -4/+65Anything with Bacon is Good.
- ZombieSociety, on 12/05/2008, -3/+56Bacon Hitler?
- airencracken, on 12/05/2008, -1/+52It seemed extremely rushed when I tried one out in the store and when a couple of promo people were passing it around in the line for a concert I was at recently. I'm not a big iPhone fan (I need a physical keyboard) and trying to address the lack of a physical keyboard with a clickable screen just didn't do it for me. Way too slow. Though I may not like the iPhone, it does what it does very well. Touch screen control. The Storm just seemed a bit clumsy with it.
I'm waiting for Verizon to pick up the Bold.
Full disclosure, I own and love my BlackBerry 8130 Pearl. - lukegravitt, on 12/05/2008, -3/+48We got the joke, didn't need your punchline.
- soccer1105, on 12/05/2008, -7/+52The only problem is the software... ok, that's kind of a big problem. I'm just saying, the hardware and the concept are great, they just need to redesign the OS. So little work was put into doing that.
- zephc, on 12/05/2008, -2/+44Hey RIM: It's the software, dummies. The iPhone hardware is ok, but not 'zomg awesome'; it shines because of its OS, APIs, UI - they are very conducive to writing really good mobile apps.
- ChromaVita, on 12/05/2008, -4/+45With a touchscreen phone, the OS is pretty much everything. Hardware is pretty hard to get wrong, and the software is really what sets phones apart.
- PCloadLetterWTF, on 12/05/2008, -17/+56So its weird that I actually like my Storm?
Sure it's a bit buggy, but its nothing a few software updates wont take the edge off of in time.
I can't e-mail/text while I drive anymore because its touch screen, but isn't that supposed to be dangerous for me anyway?
Before I get buried into oblivion by Apple fans, just remember the first iPhones had some issues to, as well as the newer 3G ones. Lets wait a few more months before we start calling for RIMs head on a silver platter. In the mean time I'm gonna go play brick breaker. - omnitrick, on 12/05/2008, -2/+41That's what she said.
- raydeen, on 12/05/2008, -0/+38I'd guy that for a dollar!
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -3/+40*hands you a golden interweb award trophy*
- jrm125, on 12/05/2008, -10/+47I think we all saw this coming.
- 11oops, on 12/05/2008, -0/+33But if you're selling hotdogs in a bacon-wrapped stand, isn't there always the problem of people eating the stand?
- birch25, on 12/05/2008, -10/+43saying the iphone is better than another phone is not bias. people can legitimately like the iphone you know.
- livejamie, on 12/05/2008, -2/+35http://rim.jobs
- mmarre, on 12/05/2008, -3/+35Don't get me wrong this phone is far from perfect but, I don't think this phone is as bad as the media would want you to believe. All of the reviews I have read have indicated three major issues with phone. they are:
1) The Suretype technology doesn't work as Rimm claimed it would. Maybe with a software update they could make the technology work better, but it's not clear if that is possible or will happen.
2)Lack of WiFi: This is not Rimm's fault, Verizon demanded that it not been included. Still it is a big negative for the phone, and there is really no way to fix this issue. If you for some reason you really need WiFi then don't get this phone.
3) The software is laggy, glitchy and ultimately crap. This has been the biggest gripe that reviewers have had with the phone, but this issue is going to be the easiest to fix.
Despite all of these flaw, the Storm is easily one of the better phone in the Verizon line up. It's never going to be an iphone killer and if you really want an iphone get one. However the storm has the potential to be the best phone in the Verizon line up with software updates and firmware fixes and should not be written off as a dud. - ArizeMag, on 12/05/2008, -9/+39yea its not all its cracked up to be
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -3/+28Hope nobody will be "guying sexy gifts"
- GawtMilk, on 12/05/2008, -0/+23I think what he's saying is, and you may agree, Bacon negates genocide.
- MRintheKeys, on 12/05/2008, -0/+21Yeah but change it to "She's Having Some Bacon" and it immediately improves.
- roguewriter, on 12/05/2008, -2/+23it really doesn't matter how cool or slick the Storm looks. Crippleware sucks.
- Finalreminder, on 12/05/2008, -15/+35***** article.
No specifics telling me why its a crap phone.
Articles like that make me suspect the critics all own iphones.
Give me specifics dammit! why is the phone bad? - greatgatsbyII, on 12/05/2008, -3/+22I think it's calm BEFORE the storm.
- johnpaul191, on 12/05/2008, -6/+24i own one. i miss calls because i feel the phone vibrating and the phone is stuck in some lag hell. i have to have a Verizon phone because of my work (long story), so this is what i got. it's no iPhone.
- crazzy88ss, on 12/05/2008, -2/+20you responded to your own question?
- drlha, on 12/05/2008, -5/+23You're mis-remembering your iPhone history here. iPhone 1.0 was an amazing first release. The major thing it lacked was features (e.g. apps), but for a 1.0 software release and what it did do, it was amazingly polished. Firmware 2.0 was however, an undertested piece of crap.
- duke, on 12/05/2008, -6/+24Guys, come on. It's a VERIZON phone! OBVIOUSLY the software sucks!!! Verizon just can't seem to resist having to tool around with the software until they break something. It's like giving a hammer to a toddler.
- drlha, on 12/05/2008, -1/+19Its compared to the iPhone because the only reason it exists is the iPhone. Before the iPhone was released RIM were laughing at the idea of a touch screen phone, what do you think made them change their mind exactly?
- iD4com, on 12/05/2008, -21/+38My wife has owned an Ipod Touch 16GB and an Iphone 16GB 3G and has got ride of them and replaced them with the Blackberry Storm with a 16GB SD. She loves it. The OS can appear sluggish at times but so does the Ipod Touch and Iphone. So what if it doesn't have WiFi. It has full 3G capabilities which negates the need for WiFi if you are on unlimited internet and WiFi is less secure. The feature she likes is funnily enough the keyboard layout options. There are lots of apps to go with it, for free. The desktop software isn't bad, just as good as ITunes. You also get a real email client with real encryption capabilities like TLS, not a web service enabled app. A 10 minute play with a device in a shop is not going to give you a real experience. But hey, who really cares if the Iphone is better than the Storm. I'm waiting for a Tricorder from Star Trek.
- fugazied, on 12/05/2008, -3/+20So she liked the ipod touch interface enough to buy an iphone, then suddenly decided she didn't like them and got rid of both to try a new device?
- InfamousAtheist, on 12/05/2008, -0/+17Apparently the digg community's sarcasm detector is broken today...
- Chirp08, on 12/05/2008, -2/+19Oh snap, RIMshot
- slcseifist, on 12/05/2008, -39/+55oh yeah, the iPhone
- wepeel, on 12/05/2008, -3/+19I'm scared to click on any of ^those^ links
- TheSpook, on 12/05/2008, -0/+16I agree with pezholio. We go up north all the time. My cell phone doesn't get Internet access up there, and I don't always want to lug around the laptop. Amazingly, even in the north woods of Wisconsin, you can find bars that offer free WiFi. It would be nice when I'm out of range for cell Internet to pull up, do my *****, and leave. Maybe even have a sandwich too without taking my laptop into the bar and looking like a giant dork.
Before you comment on the dork comment - they don't have Starbucks up there, so you have to settle for bars with WiFi. ;) - kingjam, on 12/05/2008, -1/+17How come the article never said what was wrong with the phone. It just said people hated it?
- evanfrey, on 12/05/2008, -1/+17and bacon?
- althanis, on 12/05/2008, -3/+19It wasn't a review, it was a link to a number of complaints as is clear from the title. Functional literacy ftw.
- Chirp08, on 12/05/2008, -0/+15I'd hope so, you wouldn't want to be guying sexy gifts for you parents now would you?
- TheDeuce53, on 12/05/2008, -2/+17This guy gave us more information on the phone than the article. who knew?
