- nullcodes, on 12/02/2008, -6/+202The specs are brilliant. This has the potential to be a real winner for Nokia.
- Dagreenman, on 12/02/2008, -7/+164THIS is how you compete with iPhone. all other phone companies take note: nokia is actually trying, and in some ways succeding.
i am excited. - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -6/+119ME WANT
- inurb, on 12/02/2008, -30/+117Suck it iphone. Suck on it long and hard.
- Supernova36, on 12/02/2008, -22/+97The specs are terrible; there is no apple logo..
- trigatch4, on 12/02/2008, -3/+55The physical phone is the HOTNESS but to know the REAL deal we'll have to see some detailed hands on reviews. This thing will be pretty popular unless they pull an Xperia and delay, delay, delay...
For Nokia fans this is a dream come true. I'm not a huge Nokia guy but I have to give this thing its props. I think Android and iPhone OS have an edge application wise but if Nokia can keep churning out devices like this they're going to attract a lot of customers and inherently a lot of developers.
Regardless of who you're a "fan" of... you have to give Nokia their props here. Job well done. And for people digging around trying to find more info on the N97 you might want to check out http://NokiaN97.org as its an orginized resource of a lot of the info. Google was sifting me through the same regurgitated info. - skyshock1, on 12/02/2008, -4/+53In some ways? Dude, Nokia are absolutely SMOKING everyone in phone sales marketshare - and yes even the holy, precious, Jesus-Phone is included in that "everyone".

- aliguana, on 12/02/2008, -1/+40it's not about killing the iPhone, just giving people an alternative. There is room for Nokia users AND iPhone users in this world. Just choose which ever one you like the best, which ever one fits in with your routine, workflow and lifestyle.
I can see this phone being big with the business user (after the dire reviews of the new Blackberry) - Falldog, on 12/02/2008, -1/+33Looks ***** awesome. I can only hope things run as smoothly as represented in the video.
- mattledger, on 12/02/2008, -25/+53I don't understand digg ... http://digg.com/gadgets/Nokia_unveils_flagship_N97 ...
- ayeroxor, on 12/02/2008, -3/+30You're a twit. "Flagship" means a company's best, usually most expensive device. It's not up for debate.
- nullcodes, on 12/02/2008, -4/+28The only hiccup is the 640 x 360 resolution. It shoulda been WVGA (800x480 or better) like the Sony Xperia X1.
- kronix2, on 12/02/2008, -4/+27Yeah, like a feeling of exclusivity and belonging.
Both vital considerations when buying a phone. - recklesdisaster, on 12/02/2008, -6/+29if eveything works like it says might be the next logical step after trusty iphone.
- TheBigSquid, on 12/02/2008, -0/+21Man, you sure do get riled up about phones.
- zonovo, on 12/02/2008, -3/+23available in the second quarter of 2009. http://www.nokia.com/A4630648?category=n97
- jordn, on 12/02/2008, -3/+23Looks pretty sweet! I would want to see videos of how smooth the operating system is though, before i concider jumping ship!
- incidentflux, on 12/02/2008, -1/+20The Nokia Micro super computer has arrived!
Nokia N97 - Nseries with touch and QWERTY
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/8590_Noki ...
It features a 3.5 inch (360 x 640 resolution) touchscreen with haptic feedback, 5 megapixel camera (with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash), A-GPS, magnetic compass sensors, FM transmitter and comprehensive connectivity options (WiFi, tri-band HSDPA, Bluetooth and USB), and 32GB of internal flash memory. Read on for more.
* Physical dimensions: 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9 mm, and weighs approx 150g.
* Haptic feedback for screen touches. This is provided via general vibra feedback, as on the Nokia 5800.
* 3.5 mm audio jack (also used for TV-Out) and built in stereo speakers.
* microUSB jack (USB 2.0 HiSpeed) and supports charging over USB.
* microSD card slot with support for SDHC cards upto 16GB in size (giving total potential memory of 48 GB).
* 1500 mAh battery.
The Nokia N97 is expected to ship in the first half of 2009 (presumably in June) with an estimated price of 550 Euro before taxes and subsidies. - MindTrigger, on 12/02/2008, -4/+22Almost $700?
I'm a gear head as much as anyone around here, and I've been hanging on to my crappy Moto Q9m until a good phone comes out (No iPhone on Verizon, horrible AT&T service here), but this price point is ridiculous. You would think this thing would be competitive with the iPhone's pricing if not beating it. - bluemist, on 12/02/2008, -0/+17Gotta give props to Nokia though for slowly creeping up the resolution ladder. ALL their past phones (even their past high end N96) use the same old QVGA (320x240) resolution.
- oddturtle, on 12/02/2008, -0/+17only on digg
- HonoredMule, on 12/02/2008, -1/+18Why on earth would anyone bother with an 8mp CCD for a 5mm lens?
- geodebug, on 12/02/2008, -0/+17Still would rather have a Pomegranate NS08 when it comes out:
http://www.pomegranatephone.com/ - aladrin, on 12/02/2008, -0/+16No, and we're the people that keep driving the world to be better every day.
- mthoringen, on 12/02/2008, -3/+18$700 is the unsubsidized price. The 16GB iPhone's is $500. In both cases, most of the cost ends up in the monthly fees anyway. So really, this is only slightly more expensive.
I have an iPhone, and I'd pay a decent premium for a camera upgrade alone. - Lasse, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1520 x digital zoom ... Why?
- zomgorly, on 12/02/2008, -7/+22I want but I don't want to know the price tag.
- jordn, on 12/02/2008, -0/+15http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/02/nokia-n97-video ...
^ Quick demo of the UI. Seems fairly snappy. I Also read that Nokia as of today completely owns Symbian 100%, after buying out all the remaining shareholders. This will allow them to have greater control over the UI can make them a hell of a lot more functional on their phones, as some SE and LG phones run symbian also, but SE seem to be favouring Windows Mobile, judging by their flagship handset, the Xperia, running this OS.
This should certainly shake up the smartphone market a bit, as each major platform now having a flagship phone: Apple with the iPhone 3G, Nokia with the N97, Sony Ericcson with the Xperia, and Blackberry with the Storm. - ayeroxor, on 12/02/2008, -2/+16Then you and the 5 other people who dugg you can choose to or not to RTFA.
"The N97 will launch with a retail price set at around €550 ($693) excluding subsidies and taxes, phone to ship in H1 2009." - sremick, on 12/02/2008, -1/+15Dupes are lame. Dugg the other one, buried this as a dupe.
Thanks for the heads-up. - UnseenLlama, on 12/02/2008, -3/+17Well....when you sell a phone for $50 compared to a $300 phone, which one do you think more people will buy?
- jashsayani, on 12/02/2008, -25/+37This is the true iPhone killer....
- dizilbdog, on 12/02/2008, -0/+12Here is why I like Nokia way of making phones more than Apple. Nokia says I am going to give you Everything you want you can take nice pictures watch video's listen to music surf the net use stereo bluetooth and hey if your battery goes dead well tough ***** or hey just slap another one in there "It's Your Choice". Apple's approach i'm just gonna give you a little and well I'll choose what I think you will need. Also look at these specks this might compete with a netbook...
- L3W1S360, on 12/02/2008, -3/+153.5G's of HSPDA goodness where available and all that memory! *drools*
- Aitese, on 12/02/2008, -0/+12For all the "it's too expensive" comments, this is not the American version. This is the unsubsidised price for us Europeans. We USUALLY get the phone on contract for WAY less, but have the option to buy it without a contract for the prices posted. Not sure where people are getting €700 from as Nokia's press release says $500.
- Rudegar, on 12/02/2008, -8/+18would pref andriod over symbian
- skyshock1, on 12/02/2008, -0/+10I have a Nokia N95 8gb and the only thing I truly don't like about it is how clunky s60 3rd's interface is. It jerks and pauses, and re-draws weird areas, etc.... Not pretty. Hopefully 5th edition will smooth this over.
- griffinjam, on 12/02/2008, -2/+12"not talking sales"
So, in other words, the only way you'll see something as an iPhone killer is if actual Apple fan boys think the product is better than the iPhone?
I wont be holding my breath. - aliguana, on 12/02/2008, -1/+11I have the Digg widget on my iGoogle page, and I read which ever story comes up there first. Just so happens that this one did. Nothing personal.
- skyshock1, on 12/02/2008, -3/+13@ rishid
Does it really? I think Nokia's sales numbers speak for themselves. They're doing way better than Apple even with pricier phones. People pay for them. - mswny, on 12/02/2008, -2/+11This is like if the N96 and E71 had a baby (with an additional evolutionary step of the touch screen). An N-Series with a QWERTY is plain awesomeness.
- Galbrezu, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9Yeah, if it's not android at this point I'm not interested.
- Aitese, on 12/02/2008, -2/+11Yeah...HUGH...a whole 2mm thicker!!!
- badqat, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9The Tube (5800) and the N97 are in completely different classes.
Slower processor, less desirable build materials, no QWERTY, lower resolution and smaller screen, and the list could go on and on. - Zippo, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9Christ, for that much money I could buy an actual computer.
- karnblack, on 12/02/2008, -0/+9An unsubsidized iPhone costs about the same as the unsubsidized Nokia N97 so I guess we'll compare away.
http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GGLS_en-USUS29 ... - Zounas, on 12/02/2008, -0/+8You call them "cool".
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -4/+12dude iphone doesnt' have anything, i would be dead bored with it..lets see, music web movies, some lame games and thats all...
how about this: create a 3D picture using 2 pics and send it to me with a iphone...no u can't do that can you...?
how about a webcam..how about a video call..?
say you wanna throw a ball using the accelerometer via the camera using hand motion..can you? no you can't....
iphones are for dumbasses.period.... - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+81st half of 2009
