- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -5/+854Because nothing's going to calm the populace after a terror attack more than not being able to reach friends and relatives to find out if they're all right.
/s - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -20/+575"Terror Attack" translates to "opposition to martial law".
- timedalkat, on 01/09/2009, -4/+455HOW ABOUT NO?
- avengingturnip, on 01/09/2009, -3/+365Because terrorists can't use radios....?
- NeoBanned, on 01/09/2009, -7/+336This would also allow the "authorities" to prevent any "unauthorized" images or video from being transmitted from the scene of the crime(s).
- kemp34, on 01/09/2009, -9/+277End the Empire + Restore the Constitutional Republic = solve lots of problems VERY FAST.
These "officials" seem hell bent on attacking a bunch of symptoms of belligerent government by simply doing things that hurt the PEOPLE more. - chonuts, on 01/10/2009, -8/+260Dear United States Federal Government,
Please stop wasting your time trying to come up with newer and sneakier ways to take away my god damn ***** rights. I am not afraid of you, and refuse to live in a state of fear.
Sincerely,
Ben
P.S.
And give me my god damn taxes back! At least until you figure out how to not wipe your ass with it. - sconnor, on 01/09/2009, -7/+254Brilliant. Fvckin' brilliant. This way civilians can't tip anyone off. Bastards with lame lies.
- Anim8tor, on 01/09/2009, -3/+246This does not seem well thought out.
- sheeplescareme, on 01/09/2009, -5/+242quote from the article:
"When lives are at stake, law enforcement needs to find ways to disrupt cell phones and other communications in a pinpointed way against terrorists who are using them."
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." ~ Ben Franklin
it is about creating a state of fear so that the individual gives up more control to the state and becomes part of the collective, losing their individualism and their voice. - GlobalistShill, on 01/09/2009, -5/+213Peanuts Kill More Americans Than Terrorists:
http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/january2007/0 ... - retzed, on 01/10/2009, -4/+212Cell phones played a major role in the heroics aboard flight 93. Communication FTW!
- Striker101, on 01/09/2009, -9/+195Seems to me NYPD is a terrorist group.
- Drahkar, on 01/11/2009, -2/+168On top of that. What if they have another 9/11? A lot of people were saved because they could contact people on their cell phones and tell them where they were trapped. If you shut down all the phones, you pretty much assure that those people who were only found because they called someone, die.
- sfhock, on 01/09/2009, -4/+147yeah, cause it's not like the terrorists will be listening in on the police and fire radio conversations...
- alexforcefive, on 01/11/2009, -2/+133This is exactly it. Cellphones help the CIVILIANS in situations like this. The bad guys will use radios if the cellphones are jammed.
- serv, on 01/10/2009, -1/+113FCC says jamming cellphones is illegal even for government
- Junkey, on 01/10/2009, -1/+103In related news NYPD wants to ban all cars after car accidents.
- feacesface, on 01/10/2009, -2/+96Having the phones suddenly stop working will definitely keep everyone calm.
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -5/+89This is *****. They want to be able to jam cell phones while performing terror attacks.
- Zordar, on 01/11/2009, -1/+82"When cell phones are banned, only the terrorists will have cell phones."
- ryancawdor, on 01/11/2009, -0/+74Jesus, talk about ZERO ability to forsee problems...
- dracostimpy, on 01/09/2009, -0/+74Or the intarwebz for that matter... Free Wi-Fi + Encrypted Pidgin FOR GREAT TERROR!!!
- GovernmentSp00k, on 01/09/2009, -3/+61And the honest reason for this is
?
"In testimony today before the Senate Committee on 'Homeland Security"
oh OK I get it now.. - OnAsideNote, on 01/10/2009, -1/+55So then no family's will be able to communicate in an emergency ?
Umm thats why I have a cell phone . . . . - GovernmentSp00k, on 01/09/2009, -1/+55Keep in mind that your chances of being killed in an act of "airborne terrorism' are less than such fatal events as lightning strike, tornadoes or hurricanes. You have more to fear from driving to the airport than from terrorist activity.
Hell, there are more people killed by lightning each year. Worldwide, more than some 5,000 people are zapped fatally, and many more are injured by these bolts out of the blue. For sheer terror, you can't beat lightning.
PHEAR!! the big bad phantom bogeyman enemy from desert caves across the world overseas!! That's your fabled "enemy", American dummies! Your enemies are who we say they are! Trust us to be honest with you and give you the 100% real truth. Since when have we ever lied about anything? The "evil enemies of democracy and freedom" are on the prowl coming to eat you! Becuz they "hate your American freedoms and way of life"..Look, it's a jihadier!! See over there? PHEAR! Look - a 'mooslim' enemy of freedom in a desert cave! Are you frightened out of your mind yet? Distract, divert, obfuscate. Look at Iraq! so we can pull another pre-meditated trillion dollar swindle on you here at home. Look overseas, far far away while we legislate more of your hard fought, won & died-for American civil liberties, privacy rights and Constitution away into oblivion under guise of fake "protection" and phony "security" that doesn't exist. We will tell you who your "approved" enemies are. Billion dollar "bailouts" and trillion dollar "economic rescue plans" for everyone!!
hahahahahaha **************SUCKERS********************* - inactive, on 01/11/2009, -4/+55***** Nazis
- CoreyHalliwell, on 01/11/2009, -3/+53Update: The NYPD has also put forth a motion that would block all use of flashlights in the event of a loss of the city's power.
/sarcasm
Don't stand for this *****. - GovernmentSp00k, on 01/10/2009, -2/+51There it is there..
Must be a PITA for "law enforcement" to become consistantly implicated by commoners with blurry cell phone cams videotaping, recording, documenting, photographing and transmitting their "protecting and serving" to a nationwide mass audience right...
The sales pitch will be "well..ugh.., it's for your safety!" "Al-queredia is on the run!" **PHEAR** "it's to make sure the "terroists" can't converse!" FOR THE CHILDREN!
I wonder what the profit motive is for something like this 'jamming cell phones' BS. A method for increased revenue. There's got to be one for their money making crime business. They wouldn't propose, much less consider anything without one.. - kemp34, on 01/10/2009, -2/+51Edwin Viera "Constitutional Homeland Security". Look it up. We the PEOPLE do not need these jack boots to protect us at huge expense to us, we can do that for ourselves, thank you very much.
- AndrewMoyer, on 01/09/2009, -0/+46Terrorists would have a plan and would likely be willing to die for it. Panicked civilians would not have a plan and would be helpless, trying to survive.
Cutting off communications would hurt which group of people more? - sheeplescareme, on 01/09/2009, -4/+48actually, from the governments perspective it is a brilliant idea. i remember how frightening it was to be unable to get hold of people on 9/11 because the phones were so busy and lines were down all over the city and surrounding areas. if they were able to intentionally shut down all communication at will, there would no one able to dissent and all would be at the complete mercy of the state.
- Antarcticn, on 01/10/2009, -3/+44It is thought out extremely well. CUTOFF communications.
Understand this: You are the enemy. I am the enemy. True-American Patriots are all enemies of this federal-mafia criminal godvernment.
When an enemy power in a WAR cuts communication lines of their opposition, they brilliantly trump them, put them at severe disadvantage, and position to out-flank and slaughter mass numbers.
Do you now understand any better? - GovernmentSp00k, on 01/09/2009, -2/+42"TO PROTECT AND SERVE"..
Your tax dollars at work, protecting and serving you. - Meadowhawk, on 01/11/2009, -2/+41Just when you need it most to connect with family and friends? Where are your brains?
Just who is the terrorist here? - PhantomPhoenix, on 01/11/2009, -1/+33Next thing you know it's "FBI wants to jam Internet...forever"
- CamperBob, on 01/11/2009, -1/+3250 milliseconds before airplane hits WTC #1: "Tank, need an exit!"
Also, aren't these the same chuckleheads who tried to outlaw civilian possession of Geiger counters awhile back?
http://www.villagevoice.com/2008-01-08/news/nypd-s ... - rushiku, on 01/11/2009, -2/+31Oh dear, you misspelled "oppress" and "harass".
- Hoogs, on 01/11/2009, -0/+28Jeeze, makes it seem like these lawmakers think terrorist attacks are a common occurence.
- rossisdead, on 01/11/2009, -4/+30I imagine that if terrorists flew a plane into another building, them being dead would make it pretty difficult to make a phone call to change tactics. You might try using another event as your reference.
- rmxz, on 01/11/2009, -4/+30Perhaps they mean "when they perform a terror attack".
ISTM if a little terror group managed to shut down NY's cell phone service even for a short while they'd consider it a pretty big successful operation. - curunir, on 01/11/2009, -0/+25You've got it backwards. Individual rights and liberties are *not* granted by the government. They are inherent. Ask instead what powers the people granted to the government that allows them to do that?
Another way to think about it. You have a right to free speech. But the government decides to pass a set of laws that
1) Forbids you from posting signs and flyers in any public place. (there's no "post flyers" right)
2) Regulates what you are allowed to say on a cell phone. (there's no "right to a cell phone" - according to you)
3) Stops any email going out on the Internet if it does not meet their standards. (there's no "right to send email")
4) Requires any web site to have all of its content approved by an agency. (there's no "right to put up a web site")
... But you still have free speech. Right? - tallguy240, on 01/11/2009, -0/+25It cannot be allowed. It would be misused. Anything like this always is. They then start classifying things in the realm of terrorism that have no relation to it at all just so they can use it.
- Anand999, on 01/11/2009, -1/+25You don't need a jammer. It would be simple to stop all non-emergency calls from the switching network.
- hugolp, on 01/11/2009, -2/+25The right to not have the ***** politicians deciding whats better for him? What about that?
- Antarcticn, on 01/10/2009, -2/+25SUPER BINGO ! ! !
You tell too much TRUTH.
Doubtlessly, you're now on a "Domestic Terrorist" list.
Glad to meet you, neighbor :-) - mikegast, on 01/11/2009, -0/+23They plan on deploying an EMP.
Of course the collateral damage will not be covered by insurance due to act of God clause. - rmxz, on 01/11/2009, -1/+24Maybe they're trying to prevent such heroics?
