LEGO's Ultimate Collectors Millennium Falcon Unboxed, Now Shipping (PICS)
gizmodo.com — The biggest LEGO set ever, the $499 Ultimate Collectors Millennium Falcon is now shipping, 5,000-pieces and heavy ring-binded manual included. Yes, this thing is massive. Julie Stern from LEGO confirms: "We're a bit ahead of schedule, so some people who preordered now have their sets." In other words: "great shot kid, that was one in a million

Pay attention to the set number. There is a a smaller version of the Falcon that came out a while ago (set #4504) and is nearly $400 on amazon so don't get confused. Make sure you get set #10179 (which is over 1K on amazon but only $499 on shop.lego.com
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+41Cool, but very expensive.
Why didn't they put the set together? I'm dying to see if Lego designed an interior.- batmanjr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27I'm thinking because this isn't something that just goes together in an afternoon. Heck the 1045 pc Batmobile took me 5 hours to do. So this would take a considerable amount of time.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4Maybe you're not trying hard enough? :P A 1000 piece set isn't a big sweat. 5000, a little more complex, I admit.
- carterbaldwin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I'm pretty sure there is no interior - the cockpit and turrets can fit figs, but I don't recall seeing any interior shots in the publicity photos.
- jellomizer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8 (sarcastically) What you don't open up the plastic for the legos you will just ruin the collector value. Unfortunately collecting has became big business so people no longer buy toys they buy status symbols that increase in value over the years, But remember they only increase in value because some people actually like having fun with the toys.
- dafragsta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9They didn't put it together for a very good reason. Didn't you guys see Rain Man when Tom Cruise cuts the fish sticks in half to go from 4 to 8? They just gained an extra appearance on the Digg home page by cutting the article in Half. Engadget and Gizmodo are the two biggest Digg whores that ever whored Digg.
- Eronamanthius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have the old 1000 piece set, and yes, it has interior complete with control panels, weapon racks, and engine hoses, along with numerous other doohickeys (swivel chairs, secret compartments).
If they can put that in a 1000 piece set, this thing better have one as well...

Actually I'd love to see the Star Wars Celebration guys collaborate with Lego to build a mini-fig scale death star, though I can't even imagine how many blocks that would include. - ClOlD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11***** cheapskates - why don't they give you enough bricks to finish the model?

- rrcasco, on 10/15/2007, -0/+49Well... The Kessel run is an area full of black holes. If your ship is slower, you have to take a wider, more careful route through Kessel. Since The Millennium Falcon is pretty fast, it can take a more direct route, passing closer to the black holes, so its travel length is shorter.

There's nothing wrong with owning Lego as an adult. Some of the coolest designs are driven by the adult Lego market... err, that didn't come out right. - Serak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31On the other hand, how many under-16s have a spare $500 to spend on Lego?

- norle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Um...Mega Bloks are *identical* to Lego pieces and cost 1/3 the price. So they don't have the big EXPENSIVE licensing deals. I'd rather build my $40, 2000 piece Mega Bloks Harley Davidson than waste $500 that could be better used on REAL geek hardware.

- louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+56I had a ~100 piece lego set when I was like 8 that was missing a piece. I sent Lego a handwritten note with a photocopy of the instruction sheet with the missing piece circled. I had the new one (plus a couple of common pieces from the set) within a couple of weeks for free. Lego is awesome.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Yep. They're very good about mailing out missing parts. We've had to do that twice. Great service and reputation because Lego cares about its customers.
- NikZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15It looks like you can order individual bricks from them now. Nice!

- devikwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Scoff pshaw! This is a grown-up toy. I'm 22 and I still "play" with legos, in that I buy kits every now and then and put 'em together. Bought the small Y-Wing model a couple of months back. Next up is the big $120 Y-Wing.
- devate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Who needs an excuse?
- anoldlemon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Didn't LEGO release a Millenium Falcon before? Must be a different set...
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6They continue to re-release improved or special edition sets of similar ships and scenes, which is actually good because people can get a similar model if they missed it the first time around, and some sets are more economically sensible for people who don't have alot to spend.
That said, Lego is quite over priced. I don't like Megabloks, but I appreciate the fact that competition with Lego shall help to lower their set prices.- manitcor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Lego has never gotten cheaper and they don't really consider any of the other "block" companies/toys competition. Why? Lego has two things no competitor has been very successful in replicating; high quality manufacturing and a massive collection of branded merchandise (IE Star Wars). Until someone else gets those 2 things right (at bare minimum, high quality bricks) Lego will have no serious competition. At least in the brick market, they are of course competing with other kinds of toys too.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Lego has been coming down in price just like most other things are, but nobody in the US would notice because the rate of inflation is exceeding improvements in manufacture that would make the sets cheaper.
Megabloks are nipping at the heels with their franchise acquisition, though, and some Lego sets ARE adopting a Megablok look and feel. That isn't to say Lego should make sets that look more like Megabloks, but that they DO mind what the competition is doing.
That said, Lego has a huge chunk of the market, which has nearly always led to higher than average prices.
Lego quality is par excellence, though their new part designs of late are sometimes dubious IMO.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Lego has been coming down in price just like most other things are, but nobody in the US would notice because the rate of inflation is exceeding improvements in manufacture that would make the sets cheaper.
- Thinkcage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It should also be noted that design-wise Lego is heads and tails above anyone else. Every single set is attractive, high quality, and fits the long legacy of the "system". Some of the MegaBlocks sets are just not as nice looking. Be it colors, figures, whatever they just lack that "it" that Lego has.
- howski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4MegaBloks also just don't fit together as well as LEGO bricks do.

- Thinkcage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There were at least two previous versions that I know of. There was a $99 version (which my son has) and is amazingly detailed in it's own right. Then they had a $300 version that was much more detailed. Can't imagine how this one compares.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6They continue to re-release improved or special edition sets of similar ships and scenes, which is actually good because people can get a similar model if they missed it the first time around, and some sets are more economically sensible for people who don't have alot to spend.

- ClOlD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Dude - do you want to get sued? They're not Legos - they're LEGO® brand bricks.
- Ludnix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You're mainly paying for the plans and work that went in designing it. It's all about building, not the actual result.
- BGog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You so SOOO right. If this was the same size plastic toy it would cost like $60. The FUN is building it. I have 5 and 3 year old boys and i get go help them build legos. It is always a bummer when we're done building.
- Verdanic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm 18 and I almost wish I had kids to blame the Lego in my room on. That said, it kind of makes me proud too.
- fuxjoey, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8I would love to have one, but $499? No disrespect, but its still plastic.
- devikwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Really COOL plastic.
- ClOlD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Since when did ABS become as valuable as gold per pound? I've got some pipes to sell!
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There is a small market for custom Lego parts. :)
A big gray baseplate is 11 USD. It's just a sheet, with bumps. They likely cut the stuff out of a larger sheet. It should be cheaper. (That's your market entry point right there!) - AnotherBrian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4When it is injection molded in hundreds of no-draft shapes, with slides, with .0001" precision. You'd be surprised at how expensive that is.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And that's not including any trade secrets they may have on the temperature and chemical mixtures for the ABS to get the ideal physical properties.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There is a small market for custom Lego parts. :)

- PeppermintPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There could be other factors at play, but I generally agree: If the exchange rate is even, yet the price is still disparate, it's better to import it from a friend or something!
- Jem2768, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Various prices for the same thing in different countries...
679 CAD = 675 USD
