- stolemycar, on 07/23/2009, -8/+137I liked the part where it wasn't an iPhone
- virtualmode, on 07/23/2009, -4/+42I think that sluggish experience will be fixed by a software update. Engadget has a pre-production item, and HTC has delayed the release of the phone because of some software problems.
Anyway, nobody forces you to use all those widgets at the same time. With HTC Hero you get a phone which can do multitasking. Unlike that _other_ phone, it's up to you whether you want to run 1 program at a time, or multiple programs.
I think I've read all available reviews of HTC Hero, and though only 2 of them actually mention sluggish experience, I think HTC should officially explain this situation, otherwise they might loose many customers. - virtualmode, on 07/23/2009, -3/+40you mean multitasking, widgets, SD card, standard 3.5 audio jack and that good feeling that you are not bound to one company? Welcome to 2009
- Parlo33, on 07/24/2009, -0/+19same can be said about your comment
- Barackalypse, on 07/24/2009, -1/+19Dugg up for using using mini-USB for charging and syncing! Death to proprietary connectors and the companies that use them.
- krisrm, on 07/24/2009, -6/+22The 3GS lacks the SD card slot, the Teflon coating, the trackball, and a reasonable (not to mention removable) battery... I think this has the 3GS beaten, even if some happen to not like the looks of the chin. The only problem is the slightly lame processor they stuck in it :p
- ClevelandBrown, on 07/24/2009, -1/+16Misread that as THC Hero initially - would be an interesting premise for a video game.
- Hellicus, on 07/23/2009, -0/+14Wait for the Sony Ericcson codename "Rachel"... According to the rumors, you get a quite fine looking phone, nice camera, a snapdragon processor and the new Android custom-made Rachel UI.
Can't effin' wait. - wakeborder, on 07/23/2009, -0/+10Damn it why couldn't they put snapdragon or an A8 in there? What am I going to get for my next phone now
- Tddupre, on 07/24/2009, -0/+9Catch the dragon
- Dougman82, on 07/24/2009, -3/+12Who's digging you down? That was easily the G1's greatest advantage over the iPhone, and the lack of a non-touchscreen keyboard is the reason I won't be getting either the Magic or this new Hero.
- Archon810, on 07/24/2009, -2/+10Go awai, fanboi.
- Lulzabad, on 07/23/2009, -9/+17it needs a keyboard :/
otherwise pretty cool - Invid, on 07/23/2009, -6/+14Based on the review, I'd like to see this software running on the 3GS hardware. You'd end up with a device that's a beast in both the hardware and software realms.
- cocopuffz, on 07/24/2009, -1/+9I've got the HTC Magic on Rogers. Best phone I've had so far. I love it. I had the iPhone 3g before this one. It's nice... but it's more about entertainment than actual productivity. On Rogers we've got exchange support, so I'm not missing out on anything at the office. Wait.. is that a good thing? I had exchange support on my iPhone too.. but i had to load the email client to check mail. On Android it just shows up in my notification bar... like my Blackberry, but much less annoying. =) *buzz buzz.. beeep!*
YES, I like the chin & I do place it face down to make use of the app where it changes between profiles depending on the phone position. You also get a volume boost as I like to listen to podcasts before I go to sleep. I leave it facedown for the most part when I'm charging it and listening.
And you can always change the UI with the 3rd party apps like DxTop and aHome. I use aHome and basically make it operate like the iPhone interface, but with the added drop down notification menus etc... it's much much more customizable.
The podcast rss app is good too. BeyondPod is excellent. I add my feed, press update all.. and bam. I'm good to go for the day. On my iPhone I had to go into the podcast menu.. search everytime for the same daily podcast and update that way. Just time consuming.
Music management is simple. I dump my mp3's into a folder in the file system, and bam.. it's in there. Making a playlist is easy as cake. No giant itunes to synch it. No plugging in either. I can synch via Wifi using OnAir (Win, Linux, Mac)
I really like the UI of the Hero, but I can see a 3rd party replicating it on DxTop and aHome at some point.
Heck. I love the way the trackball glows when you receive a new email, text msg or event. Little touches like that are very nice. Just my opinion. I've had both, and although I loved my iPhone, I didn't need games.. i needed to be in contact and out of the iTunes prison. - krisrm, on 07/24/2009, -0/+8I'd read in a comment thread somewhere that some of the widgets kept swap files on the SD card, and an upgrade to the SD card's speed solved many of the "sluggish" problems... just rumor, though; I really hope they fix it across the board before this hits the rest of the market :p
- krisrm, on 07/24/2009, -2/+10-easier to hold
-nicer against the face when talking on the phone
-gives the device its own distinct look
-makes the buttons & trackball easier to use
-would likely save your screen if you dropped the phone
I don't see why people are bothered by it... - arleym, on 07/24/2009, -0/+6I can't wait til 2035 when it finally gets to Canada.
- mrBitch, on 07/24/2009, -3/+9Why hasn't anyone commented on how this move to Android OS by HTC affects Windows Mobile market share?
The fact that the HTC Hero is running Android, and not Windows Mobile, is a HUGE deal.
HTC manufacture 80% of all Windows Mobile based phones... The HTC Hero is more a slap in the face of Microsoft than it is to Apple's iPhone... - mrBitch, on 07/24/2009, -0/+6Interesting, every review I have read complains about the sluggish & slow response. I tried to find a HTC Hero review that doesn't complain about it's speed, but I can't find any...
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-pho ...
" .. HTC Hero issues : Poor camera, Laggy OS, Lack of video codec support, Slow internet browsing .. "
Even an Android "enthusiast" mentions the speed issue :
http://phandroid.com/2009/07/23/htc-hero-review/
" .. main concern I’ve heard about the HTC Hero is that the screen lags and sure, maybe sometimes it does. "
Also :
http://gizmodo.com/5318860/htc-hero-review-tragica ...
" .. The Hero is flawed, though, in ways that are truly depressing in light of its potential and how much it does get truly right: It's often sluggish, which absolutely destroys the user experience. It's a particularly unfortunate affliction as the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre emphasize speed, making the Hero feel that much slower." - Animan351, on 07/24/2009, -2/+7The four across the top don't bother us much, but the placement of the "back" key is a huge pain. It basically forces your hand into a cramp-inviting position -- it's an unnatural move for a key you've got to use a lot. If you're left handed, it'll seem fine (great even), but as a righty, we found it inconvenient and uncomfortable.
Lefties FTW! - diggmeordie, on 07/24/2009, -0/+5It's 2009 and we still don't have a single smart phone that can display Flash webpages efficiently? I had high hopes for the Hero but am disappointed again.
- mr_ziy, on 07/24/2009, -1/+6Can't wait to see HTC's next Android phone with Sense UI
THAT will probably be awesome - wrek, on 07/24/2009, -0/+4"the Hero is a home run when it comes to looks, though it's not without issues" lol nice writing...
- krisrm, on 07/24/2009, -0/+4Hey, we got the Magic before the States did, at least - there's still hope! :p
- Dougman82, on 07/24/2009, -2/+6Well, you lefties ARE second-class humans after all...
- BugMeNot2, on 07/24/2009, -1/+5The camera on this thing is impressive.
- runep, on 07/24/2009, -0/+4Adobe has promised that a portable version of Flash 10 should be available soon: http://www.talkandroid.com/1308-adobe-flash-player ...
"During a recent earnings call, Adobe CEO Shantanu Naraye revealed to investors that a beta version of Flash Player 10 for mobiles will be released in October of this year." - maxwashere, on 07/24/2009, -0/+4Will this be available on ATT? And if it's not, can I futz it into working with ATT? I don't know how these things work, and although this isn't a terribly pithy comment and I have no expectation of it getting many diggs, I'd really appreciate someone explaining this to me.
- Thumper13, on 07/24/2009, -0/+4It's not awkward....I carry one every day. I love the phone and don't mind the chin. this one looks a little more pronounced, but I'll wait until I get it in my hand.
No Keyboard may kill it for me.
We need to be able to install apps to the sd without having to root. - CharlesSaint, on 07/23/2009, -2/+6It's too bad the flash experience detracts from the usability of the phone instead of enhancing it. I can't load any of the flash videos here at work to see if they mentioned this in the review (websense BS), but I think the flash experience on mobile browsers should be implemented (if it's possible) via an on-demand-as-needed basis. By that, I mean that there should be a general icon indicating that the content is flash, and only when it is touched does the content actually load. This would cut down on flash banner ads bogging down the device, while still preserving the ability to view flash content as needed.
- Mike17102, on 07/24/2009, -0/+4HTC isnt known for their snappy phone UIs. They make great hardware, but are really lacking in getting the software to use it,
They didnt even bother to load the graphics drivers onto the Tilt, so it had to use software to render everything instead of the very powerful graphics chip it had. - Scottamus, on 07/25/2009, -0/+3HTC Touch Pro 2 FTW
- gubatron2, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3XPERIA X10a > HTC Hero
- Zalyster, on 07/24/2009, -0/+3Yes! Just hope it comes to T-Mobile. I'll settle with AT&T though, I don't have 3G in my area anyway. :(
- Rudegar, on 07/24/2009, -1/+4because
- phyx726, on 07/24/2009, -0/+3It is pretty annoying how I buy 8 outlet power strip only to have 4 of them used for chargers.
- virtualmode, on 07/24/2009, -2/+5I do realize that I can run circles around that other phone to get what I want. The problem is that I don't want to run circles.
- Barackalypse, on 07/24/2009, -0/+3The 87 cent solution to that problem:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id ... - turael, on 07/24/2009, -0/+3The Rachael looks fantastic. 1Ghz processor!
- thevoiceless, on 07/24/2009, -1/+4From what I've heard, this was one of only a few reviews that complained about such a sluggish experience
- MisterChase, on 07/25/2009, -0/+3That "chin" could actually double as a protection feature if you drop the phone on a flat surface. The chin that sticks out like Quentin Tarantino's will save the screen from being smashed on the floor/table/other flat surface, which works alot like the "roll-up bars" you see on certain convertible sports cars. It protects the insides (e.g. human craniums and fine leather upholstery) in the event that the car rolls over.
- Archon810, on 07/24/2009, -0/+3lose*
- greevar, on 07/24/2009, -0/+3Nice review, but I still like my G1.
- smacksaw, on 07/24/2009, -0/+2If you each buy one and do it as a team, it's only 82 cents.
- Algan, on 07/24/2009, -0/+2If you're looking to get decent GSM coverage in the US, AT&T is your only choice. Tmobile's coverage sucks balls as soon as you go outside big cities and major highways. As much as I appreciate Tmobile for being a better company, I like my phone to work wherever I go. Which means I'm stuck with either AT&T or Verizon. And since Verizon handsets are so craptastic, I'm left with AT&T.
Sad, but true.... - detrascion, on 07/24/2009, -0/+2Does it really matter? I can't imagine that a 3.5mm hole on the side of the device is impacting you that much. Plus, the standard USB cable is 5x thicker than a standard headphone cable.
- Animan351, on 07/24/2009, -1/+3Damn. That was a disappointing review. I had High hopes for this phone. Maybe they'll get it a bit more polished by the time it comes to the U.S. Sprint will be selling it by the end of the year I know, but I don't think they'll be exclusive.
- ipodforumcom, on 07/26/2009, -0/+2Does anyone know when the black version will be comming out in the UK??
I've seen reports that its Black/Brown but orange may have a grey version??
http://www.htc-hero.com/index.php?topic=189.0 - Mike17102, on 07/24/2009, -1/+3I cant speak for this things keyboard, but I found the iPhones on screen keyboard to actually be much better than the full keyboard my Tilt had. It was one of the things I was expecting to have to compromise on, but I can clearly type much faster with the on screen one.
