Cursor Kite
makezine.com — "It's a kite that looks like a cursor! Quad-line control, asymmetrical framing, invisible stainless fittings, and opposed-bow tensioning for the sail make this incredible kite look digitally pasted right into the sky...."

- Railer, on 10/12/2007, -120/+7I don't get it it's just a couple pictures of a guy pointing out a hot chick and a radio tower?
PSYCH! I got it- rodbibeau, on 10/12/2007, -61/+10WTF? Spammer. It took me to three different pages before I finally got to soem useful content.
GO HERE bFOR THE ACTUAL ARTICLE - THE POSTER IS TeH L0se
http://www.windfiredesigns.com/timbofolio_pages/PointerKite.html - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9rodbibeau, people who insult MAKE are usually the uncreative morons of the bunch who surf the intarwebz. Go read MAKE and stop being a hater :)
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14That's not a cursor, it's a mouse pointer.
Cursor: A bright, usually blinking, movable indicator on a display, marking the position at which a character can be entered, corrected, or deleted.
Before I clicked the link, I was wondering how they were able to get the kite to blink. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2> That's not a cursor, it's a mouse pointer.
My dictionary has a more generalized definition.
"...a movable indicator on a computer screen identifying the point that will be affected by input from the user...."
Clicking and rolling the mouse wheel (as well as many drag-and-drop actions) are considered input from the user. Not very interesting input, but input nonetheless.

- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9this cant be real, can it?
nvm..."incredible kite look digitally pasted right into the sky. But it isn't."- dspickes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+50It would probably be a bit painful to be clicked by that thing.
- Brutis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3to bad most people's cursors are white with black border
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@Brutus
So what? Just because it's not the default Windows cursor you had to comment?
...some people juggle geese!
- evilpig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+57lol, it even has the default 98 desktop "clouds"
rofl- templest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28All we need is a "My Computer" kite. Then, when the cursor clicks it, we cross our fingers and hope that the matrix gets BSOD'd and we become free from this prison. Wait, we have to unmount first, otherwise we're dead, right? Mm... scratch that. I'll work on the "Human Interfacing" drivers later; right now I'm reinstalling Windows on my main computer.
- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, I was just thinking that they need to do the next logical step and have the cursor with the little bitty spinning hourglass at the back end. That'd have to be a *bitch* to design and build.
- Derferman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25real link
http://www.windfiredesigns.com/timbofolio_pages/PointerKite.html- blunderer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1noup, actually that's not the real link, spammer...
- SuperGhost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Bad picture, you can hardly see the supposed "hot" girl...
- notfaded1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That's a pretty sweet way to show completed geekage. On the site it says you can see the company at the burning man fesitival.
- Guitarsenal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Companys don't show stuff at Burning Man. Well, they can't sell it there anyway.
It would really ***** those BM guys off to fly a big Microsoft logo kite there.
- Guitarsenal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Companys don't show stuff at Burning Man. Well, they can't sell it there anyway.
- sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2This is a better picture! Examine carefully and you will notice the Kite
http://www.windfiredesigns.com/timbofolio_pages/PointerKite.html- MicrowavedH2o, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1holy crap... its really from burning man!
- 2damntall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16This would be MUCH cooler as an RC plane.
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1AHAHA thats a legendary idea. itd be like an uber prod
- D14BL0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think an RC helicopter would be better, that way you can keep it steady in the air for a while.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"I think an RC helicopter would be better, that way you can keep it steady in the air for a while."
I believe this is a quad line kite, so yes - you can keep it positioned exactly where you want it. - Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes Quad line kites can be held stationary. Two string kites can as well, but only at the edge of the wind, (at the edge of the quarter hemisphere of flight area)
Quad kites are the opposite in that they are harder to hold the the edge, but easier to hold stationary directly downwind.
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1AHAHA thats a legendary idea. itd be like an uber prod
- paerez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12this is almost as pointless as Peter's Cow Kite. On second thought, its quite pointy, seeing as its a pointer.
- babelfishi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14A Mac cursor!
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4"Look, Mom! I'm clicking on the sky!"
Now we just need a blinking cursor and some letter kites.- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21"Look, Mom! I'm clicking on the sky!"
Computer geek + acid == the above statement
- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21"Look, Mom! I'm clicking on the sky!"
- SniperSlap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Consider me one of the dumb few who was looking at the tip of the arrow trying to see if it was pointing at something other than the girl or the sky.
Oops. That IS the kite, now I get it. Duhhh...- bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Nope, you're pretty much the only one, I think. The description was pretty clear.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Nope, you're pretty much the only one, I think. The description was pretty clear."
The description wasn't that clear. I assumed it was a text cursor, not a mouse pointer, so I was surprised. Of course once I saw the big arrow I realized what it was. - SniperSlap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is exactly my point. Cursor to me is a blinking I-beam or an underscore. Pointer would more clearly define the mouse cursor.
Or...mouse cursor. Mouse arrow. Yaddy yaddy yaddy.
Just another Mememeememememe diggfaggot, trying to upstage everything he sees. Tell me, do you try showing off to trees?
- brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6Umm, this may be a bit nitpicky but that's not a cursor it's a pointer. I know they refer to it as a cursor but come on...we're computer people. Note the following definition:
cursor
1. A visually distinct mark on a display indicating
where newly typed text will be inserted. The cursor moves as
text is typed and, in most modern editors, can be moved around
within a document by the user to change the insertion point.
Source: The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing- D14BL0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Look at what your Windows "pointer" files are called. "Cursors".
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/3201/cursorbo5.jpg - brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1bah, okay.
- brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What's amusing is that Windows uses the term "pointer" AND "cursor" to describe the same thing. Seems to me this argument has been made before. Anyhow, good catch.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Cursor, n.: A generic term for the visible indication of where a user's interaction will occur.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwue/html/gloss.asp
A pointer is a type of cursor. Just like a square is a type of rectangle.
You're right: not all cursors are pointers. But all pointers are cursors. - brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Can we get a definition from an HCI(Human-Computer Interaction for the non-Computer Scientists among us) textbook or something instead of the MSDN considering I think Microsoft is using the term incorrectly? I agree with your assessment, I'd just like a better source :)
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bahh if you really want to get nit-picky:
According to the computer mouse inventor Douglas Englebart, it's called a "bug".
- D14BL0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Look at what your Windows "pointer" files are called. "Cursors".
- brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -21/+1mod down
- crawf061, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3it would be my pleasure
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4He made a mistake on his comment, possibly was trying to post a reply and posted as his own thread instead. Just knock him down below -4 and leave it be. Now do the same for me as long as you understand why you didn't need to reply and waste more space on the page.
- brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Thank you Terc. I would have clarified but then I would have been flamed for wasting even more space. Options were: a) get flamed for posting a reply as its own thread (the actual mistake) b) getting flamed for elaborating (which I'll do now since people can't seem to get this concept) or c) just post mod down so it would go away. I chose c. Can't seem to win around here no matter what you do.
- CrackHappy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1brent - should have put
"Mistaken reply here - please mod this comment down" instead of just "mod down" then you wouldn't be misunderstood, thus avoiding all the flamage / idiocy.
That and the people who are replying to your mistaken comment *like myself*.
- d3dm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I think it would be funnier if you could build a huge box kite that looked like a Windows dialog box with text stating...
"This planet is not responding and will be terminated. Would you like to send this information to God?"- sstidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me of:
"Attention people of Earth: Your planet has been scheduled for demolition"
http://www.hitchhikersmovie.com/
- sstidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me of:
- Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3+ digg because I fly 4-line kites, and that looks like fun!
- lukee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Digg for the fact that it's a black cursor (ie. a Mac cursor).
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, but you know, it turns into a spinning beach ball cursor on the way up. :^)
(Don't anyone overreact. I'm a Mac user.) - prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3looks identical to my Gnome cursor...
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, but you know, it turns into a spinning beach ball cursor on the way up. :^)
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I dare the guy to double-click on God and see what happens.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Someone should make a ctrl + alt + del kite. Assuming you're on windows.
(I'm honestly just saying that to see how many fanboys flip out) - hrdcregmer808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1woah thats awesome....
- dmonkey111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0double clicking the chick, cool
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Where can I find a replacement pointer that is shaped like a kite?
- brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ooooh see...pointer! lol sorry, I had to say it given the thread I started above.
- Frogbeater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's pointing at my Torri Gate from the Cyborgs and Samurai camp at burning man!
http://www.windfiredesigns.com/timbofolio_pages/WFDCursor.jpg
http://tribes.tribe.net/cysam
The first time I saw an article on this I thought they were pointing to the gate...
"Is the kite really small, in between the arrow and the gate?" - JamieThompson90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty cool design, I just want to know whats up with all the flaming...
Its part of the WindFire OS Series so should we expect more to come?
What do you think is next?
