- Rassa, on 01/04/2009, -1/+45I really don't care how thin the TV is. I'm more concerned how good the picture is.
- pathouston22, on 01/05/2009, -1/+26Since we moved away from CRTs, weight/depth really is not an issue anymore. Quality and screen size is.
- clockdist, on 01/05/2009, -0/+23you're old fashioned...
- emecks, on 01/05/2009, -2/+19call me old fashioned, but I'm interested in how many inches wide a TV is...
- UselessTrivia, on 01/05/2009, -1/+15For metric reference see today's XKCD.
http://xkcd.com/526/ - ahhell, on 01/05/2009, -0/+13A salesperson is a reliable source of information.
- groo68, on 01/05/2009, -2/+15I'm american, and i understand 6.5 mm better than 1/4 and inch. Decimals are better than fractions too.
- aklu, on 01/05/2009, -0/+11I have a 22" Samsung monitor that I absolutely love. About six months ago it ***** the bed, and I was really upset.
I wound up getting online and opening a trouble ticket with Samsung via their website. I only had to answer about six questions on their site and supply the serial number from the monitor. Once they confirmed I still had a warranty, they shipped a replacement unit to my local UPS store. I didn't have to talk to a human even once.
Once it arrived here in town, the UPS store called me. All I had to do was take my broken unit into the UPS store and swap it for my replacement. They handled all the paperwork and packaging for me.
I am a Samsung customer for life. The quality of the monitor I have is superb, and I couldn't be happier with their service. - airwalkery2k, on 01/05/2009, -1/+11Well, according to my chart that's about the length of two SD cards and one microSD card.
- BossKey, on 01/05/2009, -0/+10Wow, that's a real puzzler, we've never hung anything that big, thin, and valuable from a wall before *cough*fine art*cough* ...
- tidu, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8wat
- diggB, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6The last time I checked, mounting a large LCD or plasma on your wall was not a trivial matter. A quick google search shows that 46-50 inch plasmas weigh in at 80 lbs, for example and comparably sized LCDs at around 60 lbs.
- aimhelix, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6That salesperson is 4 yrs. behind.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 01/05/2009, -0/+5I am more interested in the price.
- UselessTrivia, on 01/05/2009, -0/+5In what way are OLED and LCD similar other than in producing colored lights?
LCD Technology uses a liquid crystal display that produces a colored medium which light from another source can pass through. You shine a white light through a red filter and you get a red light on the other side. That's how LCDs work.
OLEDs emit colors all on their own without the aid of a backlight.
I can't predict which of the various technologies will take over, but LCD has zero advantages other than production scale right now. OLEDs, SED and NEDs are all thinner, lighter and consume less power as well as having advantages in contrast ratio over LCD.
LCD has served us well for many years, but it's soon to become obsolete. Once these new technologies become cheaper to manufacture (which is happening rapidly) LCD will cease to be. - yetAnotherCroc, on 01/05/2009, -0/+5Reread your chart. It's mm not cm
- Pete1the1gamer, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5My projection screen is much thinner than this tv screen.
- cawpin, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5Falling against any LCD TV would crack it.
- stk198323, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4So now black is the only color capable of producing a ''3D'' image?
Then why do we have 2D color movies when we could be viewing 3D Black and White ones! - h0ser, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4but the projector isn't.
- robbob, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4For those in the US still wondering: 7mm equals a quarter of an inch
- imnojezus, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5Ok... it's .256"
- Sakumi, on 01/05/2009, -1/+4musntSurfatWork: If they got their LCD displays professionally calibrated I don't think they would spew that b.s. at you.
- HelAom, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3mm good call, is this thin tv really necessary? I mean.. it'll still take up as much room as the stand on the bottom, which is probably just as big as LCD stands now...
picture and screen size should be the biggest concern =) - Natoration, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3Cool. Now i can save money on a mount. I can just used 4 thumb tacks
- Portwineboy, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3Are you kidding? The Samsung screens are some of the finest available, you have no clue what you are talking about.
- BabyWookie, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3A Pioneer plasma still providers the best overall image quality out there, but they are very expensive and the recent Samsung LCDs come very close to providing the same black levels.
- DRT23, on 01/05/2009, -1/+4I think he's referring to two kung fu guys..
Sam Sungs
vs.
Flash Tho
FIGHT!! - FutureGuy, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3I am more concerned that this might break into two if I sneeze too hard.
- LowHz, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2It never will. After the prototype was shown a few years ago at CES it caused the existing TV manufacturers to reevaluate the performance of their product and make it better. See: Pioneer, Panasonic.
It was a victim of a licensing lawsuit and is now dead on the vine. - rumor, on 01/11/2009, -0/+2because, you know, people make a habit of lightly falling against their tv's hung on the wall...
seriously? - stk198323, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2When you plus your HDMI cable in your TV it only goes in a few millimeter.
But they could also put the connection on the side or just let the connector stick out (like a RF plug or an RCA connector on some model). - shakabrah, on 01/05/2009, -1/+3you know what they say: it's not the length, but the thickness that counts.
- darkcthulhu, on 01/05/2009, -1/+3120hz means less motion blurring, better for sports and action movies.
- leemanuf, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2Wish they would unveil a DLP that lasts longer than 2 years before it needs a $500 part.
- BabyWookie, on 01/05/2009, -1/+3Yes, the 120 Hz pictures frame interpolation is kind of a gimmick, but proper 5:5 pull-down is not. 120/5 = 24 Hz. which is the standard film frame-rate. Blu-Ray movies look incredibly juddder-free and awesome on a decent 120 Hz TVs. That is the main advantage of having a 120 Hz panel.
The frame interpolation does have it's uses though. Some people like that "soap opera/live broadcast" look It also does eliminate fast action blur in some instances and it also makes video games that run at 30 fps look like they are running at 60 fps. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Strange, from where I am standing, most women do enjoy thick men.
- stk198323, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2Yes the tv is 7mm WIDE. I also heard it run's on a resolution of 32 X 18 pixels.
- h0ser, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1What's funny is that the 120hz screen just has more pre rendered frames to make it seem like its 120hz. Nvidia GPU cards have the same option in their control panel to pre render a certain amount of frames. It's the same thing and been around for awhile now. The TV's are just now catching on.
When it comes to LCD screens, I could care less about thickness. What is important is the picture quality and quality of movements. (No Ghosting) Perfect that before you work on size. - thumperings, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1I agree. If someoen gave me one of these I'd build a case for it wouldnt care the cost. So why not just make it thicker
- Skinnyuser, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1not dugg 'cause not OLED
- sigmaman2, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1Agreed. Picture quality is more of an issue with me than thinness.
Still though, there's the follow-up issue of what you watch on it. In my mind, a quality HD picture deserves quality HD programming. - AeonTorpor, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1"hey baby, ya ever had a soup can in ya? I may be short but i'm fat like a can of corn!"
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -1/+2yeah but this is kinds tech related so it should be measured in human hairs.
- UselessTrivia, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1There's nothing wrong with LCDs, especiallythe 120hz variety. They work great and have great picture, but they have a limited remaining lifespan because the other technologies are just as good, require less power and are much smaller and lighter.
- joshuajudah, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Wow.
That was great. - YoctoYotta, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1If you like that, check this out
http://xkcd.com/526/ - inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1It will be great to watch all the crap movies and shows they put out now.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -1/+2yep "next year"
