- mozert, on 12/04/2008, -1/+16did you just put Taco Bell and healthy in the same sentence?
- shujin, on 12/04/2008, -1/+14Ramen is NOT good for you
- Tarkaan, on 12/04/2008, -1/+10I never thought I'd see the day that Reader's Digest would make the front page... Did my mom digg this? Dugg just in case.
- lil_isie, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9Are you really suggesting people steal food? I'm not sure we've hit that low of a rung yet to need to do that.
Just be conservative, yeesh. - Akairenn, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8Sure, you're in heaven.
BECAUSE YOU'RE DEAD. DEAD FROM FLAVORLESS CRAP CHICKEN.
We Fremen have a saying. God created chicken skin to feed the faithful. One cannot go against the will of God. - r00fus, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7It's a downward spiral man.
Once you have a steady diet of healthy TASTY food (and a good regimen of exercise), life just seems a whole lot more worth living.
Try it, you might just like it. - Nicosil, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7Cartman, is that you?
- TechMike, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7For fast food, do a sub sandwich (especially from Subway or a New England sub shop) or grilled chicken sandwich (Chic-Fil-A, etc.) Or a made-to-order burrito (Chipotle, Qdoba, etc). Or get a bag of salad from the supermarket produce aisle.
- Handout, on 12/03/2008, -7/+13These are good, relevant pointers for anyone just now getting into the urban survivalism game.
With the way things are going alot of people who arnt used to living on the ultra-frugal end of things are going to have to learn to shape up, and fast.
PROTIPS:
-Arizona iced tea, when bought by the jug, is actually cheaper than most bottled water.
-Saltines and V8, bolstered by the "instant salad" (mixed greens, as mentioned in the article) and raw carrots dipped in a bottle of ranch dressing makes for a palatable, and ultra-cheap, subsistence diet. Treat yourself to a meal with meat every few days, or as your wallet allows.
-Ramen: Its not just for college students anymore (that is, if you're lucky enough to have access to a way to heat it)
-Fill any obvious gaps in your diet with vitamins.
-Learn the joys of the five finger discount, though watch out, they know these are hard times just as well as you do.
-The day-old-bread rack is your new best friend, dont worry about anyone you know seeing you; chances are they're just waiting for you to leave quick before you take that $2 pumpkin pie they've been eying.
Lets hear how you keep the hunger pangs at bay. - gregkr, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7Good tips. It's amazing how unhealthy take-out can be.
- ingamenow, on 12/04/2008, -4/+10I ate the family grande meal from Taco Bell Last night. 5 burritos and 5 crunchy tacos... all under $10. is that cheap and healthy?!
- rjam710, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7It's kind of not anything for you really.
- mozert, on 12/04/2008, -2/+7I am against watching your wallet when it is about feeding yourself. only one criteria: HEALTHY FOOD, not how much that cost
- Atertract, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5You're an idiot. Losing weight is not synonymous with eating a healthy diet, and most people in the world do not dislike vegetables: http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1626 ...
Congratulations, though, you've learned to eat like ***** and still lose weight. - nunlover, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5buy a wok and stir fry some vegetables.
- LightPhoenix, on 12/04/2008, -1/+613. Start a conversation with your server. Among the talking points: How was that fish prepared? How much salt does the chef use? Can I see the recipe for the meat loaf?
That is a sure-fire way to get your server pissed off, and then they'll definitely be something unhealthy in your food. They're there to serve, not to chat. Most of the time they don't know anything about how the food is cooked anyway - that's the cook's job.
Also, obligatory joke about server farms. - IllBeBack, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4@Akairenn:
+1 for Dune reference. - saranagati, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5if you're brain wasn't wired to think anything without HFCS doesn't taste good, then you'd actually realize how tasty some fruit, vegetables and non preserved meat could be. I went 25 years with the closest thing I got to a vegetable was the lettuce on a big mac. Then I freaked out and quit drinking soda and just cut sugar out of my diet and after about 6 months I started to realize how tasty all those natural foods and there's actually a wide variety of them. Much more of a variety than a hamburger, fries and a coke. 90% of the time now i'd way rather have a piece of fruit than an actual desert... and not because i want to be healthy it just tastes better.
- KibblesnBitts, on 12/04/2008, -2/+6Or you know....just don't get take-out?
- askantik, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4And the Corn Refiners Association would NEVER lie or fabricate things about their product!
- linagee, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Chicken skin is fat. Fat is tasty. Must resist.
- rjam710, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5All by yourself? You need to get to the doctor asap!
- neuber, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5Arizona iced tea has high fructose corn syrup... i'll pass. I agree with the day old bread though.
- jessehadden, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4I can't stomach straight-up ramen, but as a base for a big veggie-filled bowl-a-soup with cut-up tofu dog, fresh garlic, jalapeno, & a tablespoon of corn... mm... I'm hungry.
I call it "Ghetto Noodle Soup." - BootsElectric, on 12/04/2008, -1/+5***** that, meat is awesome.
- Cglass, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Your short paragraph was more helpful than this article.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Vegetables are nasty.
- Kenzan, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Or..You could...you know,
just learn how to
..Cook. - RadiatedAnt, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Yuck, this doesn't warrant "for the people who have no time" No because the scenarios are and you can eat it again tomorrow just in a different half assed dish. If your going to go through the trouble why not cook things right? instead of cooking just side dishes.
- Atertract, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3@salvinorinthc Thanks for telling us something you learned from an ad on TV.
- joshtj, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3It's pretty easy to spot the healthy take-out food. It doesn't look as processed or as fatty. Do people really need to write articles on the obvious? Are people oblivious about what's bad for them?
- CindyDiggs, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3This is what Thin & Healthy teaches. I'm going to send it to them. The philosophy is right on. We are going to eat out. It is our lifestyle. So we better learn how to do it healthy as possible.
- jocamero, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Yes; apparently so. Have you been to Texas?
- Atertract, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Don't worry, almost all of it comes out the other end.
- mozert, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3not everyone can cook
not everyone has the time to cook
some restaurants (asian kind) actually offer much healthier foods than you can cook at home yourself - DRT23, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2what about she diggers? and gold diggers?
- Atertract, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3Steer clear of hot takeout packaged in plastic containers (if you're trying to avoid cancer).
- cathpah, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2SALADS!
- neuber, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3If you don't use the packets, if you do its TONS of sodium
- MasterGrief, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3I dugg you for spirit, but holy crap that sounds disgusting
- saranagati, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2You could also add all those vegetables to a pot of boiling water with a vegetable bullion cube (or even mabye some chicken broth or something). Much healthier than canned soup.
- linagee, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I can eat on a day for less than $5. $10 is not "cheap".
- message144, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3"Industry researchers at the NPD Group, a food industry consulting company, say dinners from a take-out counter or a grocery freezer will likely overtake meals from scratch within the next five years. "
And people wonder why cancer is at an all time high. - Crucible1001, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I eat for under 2 dollars a day. It is all food purchased in bulk and made from scratch.
- stutimandal, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3Easy -- Take the standard of your home cooking down to the level of take out food.
- Kenzan, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I agree.
If you don't have the time to for the basics, like cooking healthy, nutritious food for yourself, and eating at least three times in a day, you may want to re-think your life, because not only does your life probably suck, but it;ll catch up with you at around 40. - diggerling, on 12/04/2008, -0/+23."The price alone will keep your portions healthy!" High end salad bars and seafood = Hunger pains and an empty wallet.
- Kenzan, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3Good luck with the last 10 years of your life...
