- t3hmyth, on 10/13/2008, -5/+31I only drive when I carpool.
I walk whenever I can.
I don't buy/consume more than I need.
I never leave things on when I don't use them.
Green is not that complicated. - norman619, on 10/14/2008, -3/+21That's not "green."
That's common sense and being thrifty. It's called saving money. - inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+14If only more people had "common sense".
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+12six.
i eat six *****.
good day. - StigNordas, on 10/13/2008, -2/+11I'm glad this is getting some attention. Pollan is turning into sustainable food's biggest crusader.
- edebolt, on 10/14/2008, -3/+10does olive oil count? seriously though humans live a heck of a lot longer because of petroleum oil. In the old days people were constantly ankle deep in animal excrement and all the yummy insect borne diseases they carry. There needs to be improvements with petrochemicals but thank whoever your lord is that the roads aren't covered in ***** and diseases. 100 years ago the average American lived to be only 45. Sure vaccines are the largest factor but getting excrement off the roads and everywhere else has helped a lot also.
- bryanedds, on 10/14/2008, -3/+9Food communism.
Because it worked so well for Mao's China! - jacekpoplawski, on 10/14/2008, -3/+8Please keep in mind that "green movement" has nothing common with environment, nature or health.
They just want your money and your votes. - wediggit, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5I'm afraid "common sense", isn't that common.
- Rhodamine, on 10/14/2008, -1/+5helps the fiber go down easier

So sad and so true. - inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3average is median. If you take out deaths from childhood diseases, the lifespan was much higher than the average of 49 years in 1900. If you were lucky enough to survive childhood, you could plan on a fairly long life.
- norman619, on 10/14/2008, -4/+7How much ***** do you eat?
Really. Our food always contains a very small percentage of feces. - Nitrodist88, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3Whether you like it or not, the planet can't really support the increasing amount of humans in the world. Even at 1.2% growth per year, in a 1000 years there will be over 600 trillion humans. Growth can not continue forever.
- PGPirate, on 10/14/2008, -2/+5Oil keeps me regular.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3yeah i have i'm one of those people and other people notice too i get compliments on my skin all the time even from my doctor (female)
- thosewithnoeyes, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3Realistically more people are going to have to become farmers for this whole "organic" and "sustainable food" thing to work. You can't depend on the small number of farmers and the limited amount of land to produce enough food for everyone. And we don't need to just start killing people because their mom says its ok. That's called homicide.
- daveybee, on 10/14/2008, -1/+3About 1.5 yrs ago I read an article by Michael Pollan (who this article is about) in the NY Times. I've since modified my diet according to the opening line: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."
I've lost weight and feel much healthier all-around. - kishosingh, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2It is true that green movement has been raised but along with many other thing has been included in food system. Like - chemical uses in food.
- Nitrodist88, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2Yes, it's marketing. ***** farmers!
Wow, assume more, I suppose, and act like a pretentious prick. I'm fairly certain that you need calcium and milk is, by and large, an important factor in that it provides the calcium.
AND YES, I realize there are alternatives.
So, in closing, ***** off. - AmazingSteve, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2Shut up and eat your Veal.
- kplo, on 04/01/2009, -2/+4[homer simpson voice] mmm....oil.
- rizzo2008, on 10/14/2008, -2/+4uh-oh peak oil doomers to spew cult material on comment section in 3 2 1...
- uberchaoslord, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2ZOMG peak oil catastrophe doom death plague
- ButterLoyalist, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2I eat about a couple bottles of olive oil per year.
- jinnie, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2avoid the ground meat
- veganpa, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2A more important question is: how much suffering do we eat? Many foods are produced via a great deal of cruelty, and we can each make ethical choices to boycott those products.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2no they want a super hero with magical powers
these problems are difficult and conplex quite possibley beyond the capacities of either candidate - TheOneKen, on 10/14/2008, -1/+2It troubles me that this article puts so much emphasis on the next President. Hello, the Constitution says nothing about food. I think people honestly just want an elected king. The foodies should talk to Congress, as well as state governments.
- Rhodamine, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1who is "pro-abortion"?
anyone?
didn't think so. - uberchaoslord, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1Why not? the Green movement does it all the time in the reverse direction.
- duke0, on 10/14/2008, -1/+2Just finished his book Omnivore's Dilemma -- highly recommended! Insightful and interesting. I'm a computer guy, not a food guy, and I found it very, very compelling.
- skidooer, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1You know, you are right. Growing plants in rows in large fields and cutting them off at their stems at harvest is incredibly cruel to the plant. It would be much less cruel to let animals graze naturally growing plant matter and then eat the animal.
- nowhereelse, on 10/14/2008, -2/+3That's clever. You give something an inaccurate description then knock it down with a vague and inaccurate comparison to something you've just incorrectly associated it with.
Maybe you can define food communism is and describe the previously-unnoticed agricultural wealth of China prior to Mao? - jonshipman, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1I just pictured Nick and Norah right there.
ewwwwwwwwwwwwww - inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1The suffering is what makes it so tender, and its soul is what makes it so sweet.
- mikbunn, on 10/14/2008, -1/+2I have terrible springtime allergies. I really don't want to eat Pollan.
- edd17, on 10/14/2008, -1/+2Well i don't know about you, but whenever i hear about someone getting pregnant i always try to talk them into an abortion. I just like them so much...
- dmax801, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1http://www.squarefootgardening.com
- bryanedds, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1Sure.
Communism is merely statism taken to its full degree. This may not be communism fully, but it is in the same spirit and only to a lesser degree.
The more government is involved in the production and regulation of the food supply, the more it will approach the same result of food communism. That is, shortages and destruction of quality.
It's all basic economics. Read all about it :)
http://jim.com/econ/chap01p1.html - healthinformer, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1Plant a garden. Then you know where your food comes from.
- Whackly, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1What?
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -1/+2And rat hairs.
- sremick, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1He didn't say you had to. He just said that group did.
"Ever noticed apples are red?"
"*****, you don't have to be an apple to be red!" - cezx, on 10/14/2008, -1/+2Here i was thinking im reading an artticle on healthy eating. Burried for the assumption that oil is directly connected to climate change.
- bluestrikep, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1I must say, TheOneKen, you're right, the constitution says nothing about food, so why is the goverment paying farmers to grow what goverment wants it to grow? If I recall, it was President Nixon who first began this movement from healthy farms that would use everything to large mega farms that required more chemicals, more systems, and more oil to make the same amount of food.
- Bender32, on 10/14/2008, -3/+4As an American it is my right to use as much oil as I choose to in any way I fathom. We've earned this right and deserve it. I could care less about the tree huggers and such, when we run out of God's Glorious Goo, then we'll just invent cold fusion or discover how to tap vacuum energy, or whatever, as long as my wheels turn, and my Styrofoam is fresh.
- Volatile36, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1There are standards for the percentage of bugs that food can contain.
- uberchaoslord, on 10/14/2008, -1/+2No people who live a HEALTHY lifestyle have those things. You don't have to be herbal to be healthy ffs.
- Tarnum, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1That's why some people cook their food.
