- IUseAShovel, on 07/18/2009, -0/+55Double bacon cheeseburger. It's for a cop.
What the hell's that all about? You gonna spit in it now?
No, I just told him that so he makes it good. - pingveno, on 07/18/2009, -4/+47No, the Stella Liebeck case definitely had merit. The Wikipedia page for "Liebeck v. McDonald's Restaurants" goes over the case reasonably well. If you think about it, McDonald's was being quite idiotic. Hundreds of people had gotten severe burns from McDonald's coffee, including many third degree burns. When people need skin grafts because of your coffee then it's time to change something.
- dancerathlete, on 07/18/2009, -1/+34I wonder how many times we have unknowingly eaten somebody's spit in our food?
- zyklon, on 07/18/2009, -0/+31Hi, I'd like a literacola.
- Lucas123, on 07/18/2009, -9/+40Well, that's enough to put you right off fast food.
I thought for sure that list would also include the case of 79-year-old Stella Liebeck who in 1994 sued McDonald's for making their coffee too hot after she spilled it and scolded herself. She was awarded $2.1 million by the jury, and the judge reduced it to $640,000. - rangah, on 07/18/2009, -1/+30I have a coffee pot and I use it all the time. I'm a clumsy guy. I've spilled my coffee all over myself more times than I can remember. So far, no skin grafts.
- Awwzm, on 07/18/2009, -1/+26I never mess with anyone serving me food. I don't appreciate food with high urine content.
- defubar, on 07/18/2009, -0/+24"Don't spit in that cops burger."
- Fhwqhgads, on 07/18/2009, -0/+19Gives a whole new meaning to the term "finger foods" doesn't it?
- RickScarf, on 07/18/2009, -3/+20The coffee served in that case was way way way too hot and a normal person would not have assumed it to be that hot. The case sounds stupid but she really was in the right on that.
- Nintendesert, on 07/18/2009, -1/+16They won't serve the full time like any other criminal. However they did try to basically steal millions of dollars and got caught. No different than the Madoffs of the world and he got 150 years.
- mizike, on 07/18/2009, -4/+18"Ayala and her husband later admitted planting the finger; Ayala was sentenced to nine years in prison, and her husband was sentenced to 12 years."
Holy ***** *****, 21 years of jail time? That doesn't seem excessive to anyone else? You'd get less for Manslaughter, ***** even second degree murders are eligible for parole after 10 years. The most frightening part is that I'm sure there are people reading this who think they got off too lightly and should be locked up for so long they'll never see daylight again. - justchilling47, on 07/18/2009, -2/+14Why did they attack cops? The very people that would go right back inside and arrest you? Because fast food is singled out in this slide show it is almost as if fast food employees are fighting the establishment. Like it is some sort of movement.
- jiesa, on 07/18/2009, -3/+15McDonald's had been under the mistaken impression that people who go through the drive-thru wait until they get to their destination to drink their coffee and were making it extra hot so it would still be hot when the customers got to their destinations. Subsequent studies showed that this is not the case. People who get coffee from the drive-thru tend to immediately take a sip from the cup, and if that coffee is too hot then this can lead to all sorts of issues ranging from burnt tongues to major skin grafts to car accidents. They had had a number of smaller claims leading up to this rather famous lawsuit, which makes me wonder who got fired for ingnoring this problem...
- Yankees368, on 07/18/2009, -3/+14Why does the fast food industry have to be singled out here? People can mess with your food no matter how classy the joint is. Do you really think that John the busboy from the fancy french bistro is any less of a scumbag that John the burger flipper at burger king?
- soupdawg30, on 07/18/2009, -0/+10Evidence
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -0/+10Cops need to stop eating so much fast food.
- tanameyer, on 07/18/2009, -2/+12McDonald's intentionally made their coffee 10 degrees hotter than the normal temperature that most other fast food restaurants make their coffee. When she spilled the coffee on herself she suffered third degree burns to six percent of her body. She asked McDonald's to pay for her medical bills (which were in the tens of thousands of dollars) and they refused.
She had no choice but to sue. I'd say that in this case McDonald's got what they deserved and this is a case of the justice system working. - tanameyer, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9@kinerry
"Also, the case results were sealed, so your numbers are obviously ficticious"

From the Wikipedia page:
Background
Liebeck was taken to the hospital, where it was determined that she had suffered third-degree burns on six percent of her skin and lesser burns over sixteen percent.
Source: Ralph Nader & Wesley J. Smith, No Contest: Corporate Lawyers and the Perversion of Justice in America (1996) ISBN 0375752587, Page 268
Attempts to settle
Liebeck sought to settle with McDonald's for US $20,000 to cover her medical costs, which were $11,000, but the company offered only $800.
Source: Andrea Gerlin, Wall Street Journal, “A Matter of Degree: How a Jury Decided That a Coffee Spill Is Worth $2.9 Million,” Sept. 1, 1994, p. A1
Evidence presented to the jury
During the case, Liebeck's attorneys discovered that McDonald's required franchises to serve coffee at 180–190 °F (82–88 °C). At that temperature, the coffee would cause a third-degree burn in two to seven seconds. Stella Liebeck's attorney argued that coffee should never be served hotter than 140 °F (60 °C), and that a number of other establishments served coffee at a substantially lower temperature than McDonald's.

- WoWii, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9Why are so many finger tips involved? I personally try and take care of my appendages.
- GalacticRerun, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9Me too, I'm glad they put a warning in the title so I didn't click.
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9Liter is French, for give me some ***** cola!
- IgorUnchained, on 07/18/2009, -1/+9To say nothing of the hundreds of idiots who call 9-11 when their order is wrong or the service isnt acceptable.
- Eezyville, on 07/18/2009, -1/+9lol the fast food industry employees do not like cops.
- Networktwenty3, on 07/18/2009, -0/+7Everything is from 2005... I want to know what happened to Michael and Kristy from Dominoes Pizza, last I could find was a court hearing in May, and nothing since.
- Fhwqhgads, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6Yeah, like there's no way the police could have access to a lab or something like that and trace the DNA in the spit back to you. Great choice of targets, guys!
Why not just turn yourself in and save a lot of time if you're that eager to go to jail? - smemily, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6I hate it that it's all about the person getting served the finger-burger and nobody gives a ***** about the person whose finger it is. Workplace safety?
I remember a case where a person lost a finger in ice cream, and due to half the workers panicking it mistakenly was served to a customer. The paramedics ask for the finger so it can be reattached, and the ***** douche wouldn't give it to them! - dball48, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6That's quite a story you just made up. Here's the truth http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/chili.asp
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -3/+9Nice job adding separate peoples' jail time to be more sensationalistic. Do you currently have a job writing Digg headlines? And it's fraud. Plain and simple. If they would have got away with it, how many millions of dollars would they have essentially stolen from Wendy's?
- Fhwqhgads, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5Well fast food workers have never been known for being in the upper echelon of the IQ range.
- mogdor, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5What is up with all the severed fingers in food?
- Nintendesert, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5Get the cops fired when they pop on a piss test?
- DerangedPenguin, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4The particular McDonald's where she purchased the coffee had been warned by health inspectors on several occasions to turn the temperature down.
- radsprack, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4Shenanigans!
- Denominator88, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4The one titled "Special Value Meal" reminds me of Super Troopers.
Farva: "Does that look like spit to you?" - inactive, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5Why would anyone just sprinkle marijuana on a sandwich and them serve it to another person? What was the point?
- bail3yz, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5@t0x2c
I'd like a cheeseburger and a large fry to go please. - JasonHaley, on 07/19/2009, -0/+4As a former-busboy who worked at a multi-million dollar restaurant for a yuppy crowd, I can say that I've seen some shady behaviour by other busboys (not me, I believe in karma). I was too busy working to catch anyone spitting but not only would I not put it past them I did see bad behaviours. For example, one guy I knew thought it was ok to steal a few fries off a dish. Another girl I knew (who was actually a lower chef) ate food while preparing it...maybe you'd expect that from a fast food joint but not a fancy place.
But the truly worst part had nothing to do with what we were doing. There were rats in the restaurant and it was not uncommon to catch them...in fact we caught many. Hopefully they never touched the food, but I don't see how so many could exist without a food source... but seeing them running around the kitchen was kind of gross in itself. - forcedfx, on 07/18/2009, -1/+4Not sure why people are digging you down. You're right.
- t0x2c, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3That's because if you call 911 about spit in your food you get hung up on.
- JasonHaley, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3@Yankees
Hi, me former-busboy again. We made less than minimum wage. But because we were at a restaurant for yuppies we got pretty good tips.. although some nights we got less than someone with minimum wage I'd say that we could expect on average $5-15 (Canadian) more a day than someone with minimum wage. ..Not enough for me to fear losing the job. However, there's also the possibility of 'moving up' to be a waiter someday which is more tempting than a fast food place..but that's not every busboy and all you need is just one guy to hate his job enough. - diggyduggle, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3indeed, too many stories about parts of fingers. *shudders*
- Roobix, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Exactly what I was thinking. Imagine taking a decade out of your life cause you put a finger in your food? ***** that's harsh.
- ItchyRichy, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3it's not like it'd get them high anyways unless they used a fat emulsion or something of the sort..
- O8SERVER, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3The husband probably got more time because he was the one who supplied the finger from a co-worker who lost it in a workplace accident.
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3I would imagine there were several charges though that added up to a full 9-12 year span. Afterall planting a finger in food in the first place is a pretty major health violation I would say. Thought it doesnt say, I would think if this were a real human finger then however they got it was probably also grossly illegal, unless they borrowed it from a *really* good friend for a cut of the profit from the impending lawsuit (which at this point would be an illegal scam and abuse of the legal system).
There isnt really enough detail to say if they really deserved that much time, though it sounds like they are terrible and stupid people that deserve what they got for endangering others and trying to cheat the system. -
