- synthtube, on 12/13/2008, -3/+16Yeah, but in American football they wear enough padding for a fat girl to use when she's got her period (even on a heavy day).
- wisie, on 12/13/2008, -12/+24AFL > NFL
- Coy0te, on 12/13/2008, -3/+14Oh please, people go to war with less gear then an NFL player.

Go to 1:49 in that, I'm majorly surprised it wasn't included! - FreddieD, on 12/13/2008, -1/+10I'm just a dumb american (though I guess not *that* dumb since this game is unique to Australia) and I'm only asking this but, why the hate towards AFL? Looks like a fun hybrid of rugby and american football.
- mitch37, on 12/13/2008, -5/+14Nice to see some AFL on digg. Best ball sport around.
Another good watch, Top Seven Goals: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=qClMr4JJICM&feat ... - synthtube, on 12/13/2008, -3/+9That's why pussy Americans wear helmets or protective gear.
- Gizza, on 12/13/2008, -1/+7"National sport? Please. Take a trip outside Victoria retard and nobody gives a ***** about AFL. "
or WA, NT, SA and Tasmania. - synthtube, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6KFC > MCD
- jhoogy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6Great to see this on the front page. Better then all the gridiron that gets on there of recent.
- GDOG5, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6Top 7 ALF Marks. Now this is the stuff to watch!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ0W9SbBHqo&NR= ... - Trollbane, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6In Australia there have traditionally been two different forms of football; Aussie Rules and Rugby League. In the past it was very state defined, with New South Wales, Queensland etc. having a strong League culture and Victoria, Western Australia etc. supporting Aussie Rules. In the last twenty years or so, both sports have attempted to expand and have started up teams in other states in the country, which has brought them into conflict. So mreade's comment was pretty arrogant to call it a national sport.
- opiniastrous, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6Unlike the US, Australia has many, many different codes of football. Rugby Union (yeah!), Rugby League, Aussie Rules (AFL) and Football/Soccer are all played here. Most of them are centred in certain states, although each one is played nation wide.
Rugby Union and League are big on the east coast from NSW/ACT up to QLD. There are also international teams (the Wallabies and Kangaroos) that play teams from New Zealand, the UK and South Africa (probably the biggest Rugby nations) as well as a number of others.
AFL is big in the south of Australia, centred mostly in VIC and SA, although it's also played in WA a fair bit. Pretty much no-one plays Aussie Rules outside of Australia.
Football/Soccer is easily the smallest code in the country and is centred in NSW, but it's becoming bigger probably due to the fact we have a high migrant population from European and Asian football nations. The international football team is called the Socceroos.
If you live in a single state, chances are you'll know of the other codes, will see them on TV and will have teams for every code around where you are, but really only one game will be played on a large scale and you'll give hell to anyone that plays another one. The first time I really came into contact with AFL was when I went to university in the ACT and a number of Victorians and South Australians were in my year. That said, when one of the teams is playing another nation, every Aussie backs them regardless of their allegiance.
All that explained, here's a good rugby hits video. Those AFL guys don't know what a tackle is!

- skanker08, on 12/13/2008, -3/+7Lucky he had a helmet and 6 inch thick padding to take the hit....
- eurofooty, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3And it's not just played in Australia....
Aussie Rules all over the world: http://www.aussierulesinternational.com/
And in the US: http://www.usfooty.com/ - LukeUlrich, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Rugby? Really? That's what you're going to call it?
- ablacksunrise, on 12/13/2008, -1/+4The way you typed that, I'm guessing this was a lesson learned the hard way...
- kholburn, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3There is a very similar game is played in Ireland called Gaelic Football. They even have games between the Irish and Australians although I believe at the last couple the Irish complained the Australians played too rough.
- FreddieD, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Sounds like you need to call Terry Tate.
- FreddieD, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Awesome guys, thanks for the cultural lesson. Here is all I really knew about Australia prior to this:
- Even if you guys won your FIFA region in world cup qualifying, you'd still have to win a home-and-home series to make the tournament
- Our version of Australian beer is Fosters, but apparently that is the equivalent of skunk piss to you guys
- You guys sign every email I've ever gotten with "Cheers" (applies to New Zealand as well)
- You guys pretty much kick ass in cricket
- You get royally ***** on internet freedoms
- When playing Risk, conquering your country early on is crucial towards winning that damn game - mreade, on 12/13/2008, -10/+13That sent chills down my spine watching those big hits again... I love our great national sport!
- anarchyinthekr, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3it looks like these particular guys didn't
- Trollbane, on 12/13/2008, -8/+10Victoria's a nation?
- honeybrass, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2great to be one of the chosen!
- WheezyMustafa, on 12/13/2008, -2/+4Yeah, you're right. I wish I were a cool Australian.
- Gizza, on 12/13/2008, -2/+4AFL is much more national than any other football code here though. Although it is less popular in some states it still has a following and is played in most states. Rugby on the other hand is pretty much unheard of in WA. We don't even have a team. I don't think it's really played in SA either.
Rugby fans also hate AFL because it is actually successfully being expanded into the Rugby states where as Rugby has completely failed to expand into the AFL dominated states.
The AFL grand final is also consistently the most watched sporting event in Australia. - eurofooty, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3Aussie Rules is played in over 40 countries internationally.

- alphgeek, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3I am a bogan and I resemble your remark sir.
- alchemist27, on 12/13/2008, -3/+5***** unaustralian
- FreddieD, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2I'm going to use the process of elimination then to conclude that you find major league baseball to be the least boring sport of them all?
Well, you never said WNBA either, so there's a chance that you don't find women's basketball boring. - synthtube, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Marks are by far the single thing that distinguish AFL as so much more impressive than NFL - you'd never see one of those padded fat/muscly bastards jump that high AND run that fast AND kick that far in the one game.
- GeckoSlayer, on 12/13/2008, -4/+5AFL is alive and well everywhere in australia. Although places like North queensland (me) are heavily against it, there is a heap of army fellas that come up every know and again that play down at our local club ;)
And we have an AFL stadium now... (Townsville) - Inferny, on 12/13/2008, -2/+3You have to realise that these are some of the more serious hits in the game. Majority of the time, it is a lot less violent than this.
I don't really watch the sport, but it is not as violent as these hits show. These are the exception, not the norm. Watching some of the hits from American football, I could say the same thing, as, even with all of their pritty plastic amour to stop them getting hurt, they still get f***ed up badly at times.
For all sports, you have to watch more than just the highlights to get an idea of the whole game. Hell, you watch a few bad golf moments and that can look more dangerous. - HawkieEyes, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Cross country basketball
- Trollbane, on 12/13/2008, -4/+5***** retard...That's why we use SPELLING or PUNCTUATION when we attempt to insult others. What dumb asses.
- synthtube, on 12/13/2008, -2/+3So what can I get for ten dollars?
- loopyloopy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1number 2 was practically a dive. well acted in any case.
- honeybrass, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1not much greater
- davodee, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Great to see AFL on Digg and listen to the Dark Knight Music in the background, all good!
- pingudownunder, on 12/13/2008, -2/+3Rugby Union is more popular than League in WA.
Rugby fans hate AFL not because of the expansion (against the will of the poor buggers who have to put up with it), but because it is a crap sport where they just kick the ball to each other. Its a game of tennis but with feet.
I woulkd be happy to leave the AFL in Victoria and SA where it is treated much like a religion. But don't force your religion upon us. We don't want it.
QLDer. - honeybrass, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1However, beach volleyball, well....
- honeybrass, on 12/13/2008, -1/+2Nobody likes a bogan!
- CrazyChair, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Very nice :). I always feel so sorry for the stepladders...
