- canadage, on 04/21/2009, -17/+55Climate Change... not global warming. Let's switch terms to something that actually describes what's going on please...
- anstice85, on 04/21/2009, -11/+36This is why climate change shouldn't even be a political issue. Eventually you get enough people who have no idea what they're talking about involved saying things like TAXES OMG when scientists are just trying to do their research without being bothered by 50 interest groups at once
- Alphabet, on 04/21/2009, -7/+31Did anyone even ***** read the article? It says the lack of ozone and increased winds is causing the antarctic ice to increase. They then point out:
1. north pole is decreasing at record rate
2. increase in antarctic ice is temporary due to lack of ozone
3. antarctic ice will start decreasing within 10 years as ozone levels restore
4. 1/3 of antarctic ice will be gone within the century - inactive, on 04/21/2009, -31/+54shhh...... be quiet.
- billricardi, on 04/21/2009, -2/+23But... we've known about this since 2002. Someone confirms it and it's news? Since when do we doubt long term NASA studies?
http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/topstory/20020820southsea ...
I hate the media some times. Top flight scientists say something and they ignore it. But someone's buddy says it, and of course, it gets ink. He put together the fact that ozone depletion would account for local temperature changes, which is exactly what NASA correlated it to. Woo, give him a balloon. - nwogoldberg99, on 04/21/2009, -2/+21The summary of the submitter is a bit deceiving. If you actually read the whole story instead of the first paragraph, you will see that this is only temporary. The article goes on to explain what exactly is happening, and states that, given current trends, about one-third of the Antarctic ice is going to disappear in our lifetime. Buried as deceptive.
- york2600, on 04/21/2009, -3/+22South Pole = Penguins
North Pole = Polar bears
You should have paid attention in....first grade - dzhuo04, on 04/21/2009, -13/+29does anybody take the newscientist seriously? they talk about zero science and consider themselves the leading authority on science. I bet if you asked the editor of that "publication" is it even considered a publication, what the scientific method he/she would probably not be able to even explain the principles of scientific method, and scientific theory. This stuff cracks me up every time.
- zjbird, on 04/21/2009, -3/+17Do you post this on every global warming article?
- dzhuo04, on 04/21/2009, -2/+15newscientist, nuff said.
- ai52487963, on 04/21/2009, -4/+16Ah, digg, my last bastion to turn to for anti-scientific comments.
- smdyson, on 04/21/2009, -96/+108Because Global Warming isn't real? It's just a vehicle for the government to implement the Carbon Tax?
- TrevorBradley, on 04/21/2009, -4/+14There aren't any polar bears in the antarctic (south pole). The north pole's ice (mostly thickness at this point) is melting at a scary rampant point.
Most of us are good scientists... Present us with evidence that CO2 isn't increasing temperature and we'll listen! (Small scale tests sound like a good start). - dzhuo04, on 04/21/2009, -4/+14wow the contradictory nature of your two comments make for a great juxtaposition that only utter stupidity can truly bring.
- JasonMath, on 04/21/2009, -1/+11Actually, weather is the study of day-to-day atmospheric conditions over an area, while climate is the study of long-term atmospheric conditions over an area. Basically, the weather forecast is what is predicted for a certain area in the future, while the climate of the area is what the weather was like overall in the past (usually at least 30 total years).
- Asrrin29, on 04/21/2009, -11/+21Is it so ***** hard for you people to understand That the stuff we pour into the air adversely affects weather? Yes, the Earth is a self correcting system, and eventually (hundreds, thousands, millions of years) it will fix itself, but that doesn't mean that it will be a good thing for us humans! If we want a chance of sticking around long enough to get off this rock, it would be helpful to make sure the global weather doesn't ***** us over. pouring trillions of tons of CFC's, pollutants, and other crude in our atmosphere is not helping our long term survival. you people are arguing over ***** semantics. Global Warming that, Science conspiracy theory this. OPEN YOUR ***** EYES! You do bad things to the air, the air does bad things to us. bunch of ***** right wing lunatics.
- snapcase, on 04/21/2009, -2/+11Yep. And all it took was some balloons and some saran wrap.
- realpolitik, on 04/21/2009, -1/+10Can you ***** read? Like honestly, can you?
FTA:
"It seems CFCs and other ozone-depleting chemicals have given the South Pole respite from global warming.
But only temporarily. According to John Turner of the British Antarctic Survey, the effect will last roughly another decade before Antarctic sea ice starts to decline as well."
TEMPORARY RESPITE FROM GLOBAL WARMING. DUE TO AN OFFSETTING EFFECT CAUSED BY OZONE DEPLETION. THIS ALL ACCORDS WITH THE CLIMATE CHANGE MODEL.
Please stop pronouncing on issues of climate change with such an authoritative tone when you are incapable and/or unwilling to read your so-called evidence against global warming. - overtoke, on 04/21/2009, -1/+10wrong pole, dumbass
- inactive, on 04/21/2009, -1/+9Read the article!?! Why? The headline saves us the hassle of getting the facts, doesn't it?
- gridbread, on 04/21/2009, -12/+20Eh, newscientist.
- realpolitik, on 04/21/2009, -2/+10Thank you. This TEN YEAR Antarctic cooling trend is the flavor of the month talking point for global warming skeptics. People can be so ***** retarded.
- realpolitik, on 04/21/2009, -5/+12You know what's more of a religion than global warming? Believing that the Earth will "automatically adjust" for any imbalance in its atmospheric composition due to human activity.
- anstice85, on 04/21/2009, -7/+14That's not true at all. The media ran with the "global warming" phrase back in the 70's, basing it on a small number of disproven studies. They won't let it die, for some reason. Climate change has been the correct phrase for the last three decades.
- daschupa, on 04/21/2009, -1/+8Meh, not nearly as terrifying, it will never be picked up by the media. Maybe if you added Apocalypse somewhere in there..
- billricardi, on 04/21/2009, -0/+7"long term my ass, we only started to collect global temperatures in the past 40 years"
Wrong, we have U.K. records dating back to 1659.
"that is no where near "long term" in terms of the earths life span"
NOTHING is long term in terms of the Earth's life span! Humanity only populated the globe for a fraction of the billions of years the Earth has been around, and accurate core drilling only goes back so far.
"you'll only be satisfied once both polar caps have melted"
I will? What part of my statement said that I doubted that the caps are in trouble? I know for a fact that they're in trouble. I both understand the current studies of, and respect the impact of, climate change... enough to know what I'm talking about.
"this my friend is SCIENCE"
No, what you have is words that you parrot back without understanding them. That isn't science. That's brainwashing. Pick up a book and understand the MEANING of the words, and you won't falsely accuse someone in the future. - york2600, on 04/21/2009, -4/+11We stopped making it bigger, but it's still there.
- AFelsinger, on 04/21/2009, -0/+6this story isn't denying climate change. did you read it?
- anstice85, on 04/21/2009, -4/+10That'd be ridiculous. What we need to do is completely ignore it, stop doing all research and learn the wonders of creationism.
- DifferentAngle, on 04/21/2009, -8/+14Scientists need grant money - so if they can convince you there's a problem then they're set until the problem's solved.
/academic_researcher - Trent1492, on 04/21/2009, -0/+6"Are you saying that you same moonbats weren't telling us all that the world was entering an ice age 30 years ago? What the ***** makes you think you're right this time?"
If by Moonbats you mean climate scientist, then the answer is yes. Allow me to demonstrate why you are a dupe. This Denialist talking point has been brought out so many times that the accusation has actually been the subject of a peer reviewed paper. In the September 2008, issue of the American Meteorological Society's Bulletin, three authors did a survey of the peer reviewed science of that time. Well, actually, they did the survey from 1965 to 1979 and found that 71 papers were published that either predicted warming, cooling or were neutral in making a prediction about the near future of the planet's temperature.:"The survey identified only 7 articles indicating cooling compared to 44 indicating warming." Got that? Of the 71 papers published only 12% predicted cooling.
So now you know why I consider you to be a ideological dupe sucking at the fountain of misinformation. Disagree? Then simply go to the JSTOR, Nature and AMS data base and do your own search. Remember you need to get that count above the twelve already found.

" It's the southern ozone hole whatdunit. That's why Antarctic sea ice is growing while at the other pole, Arctic ice is shrinking at record rates."
It causes antarctic sea ice to expand and arctic ice to grow. Guess where Polar bears are found. The Arctic. - spinityeah, on 04/21/2009, -4/+9Learned about this in Uni. It's the northern expanse of Ice that's most in danger of this 'Global Warming' (not the correct term) issue. Didn't pay the best amount of attention but 'Climate Change' causes warming and cooling trends all around the world, so this fits with the info provided in this document.
As for the moron who said that climate change isn't real? Uneducated moron are we? Yeah the government may be playing on the idea and making money from it, but what do you expect from them? A grease down and a Shiatzu? - peters1023, on 04/21/2009, -4/+9If you were a scientist I might think you have something. . . But alas
You are not. - DankBuddz, on 04/21/2009, -0/+5Oh, what the ***** is wrong with you? Why are you bringing up logic into an argument here? Everyone here on Digg knows that Climate Change isn't real, its actually created and fabricated by thousands of scientists world wide, so that way only a few of them and their governments get filthy rich!
Don't you even DARE make any citations on here to source of information which may jeopardize our rhetorical opinions! We enjoy holding certain beliefs based on nothing and acting like we know the truth about something, without actually learning anything about the subject to begin with (mostly because we're stupid enough to associate an environmental issue with a political party).
Now please leave before I post links to global warming denier websites that have all been debunked by decades of research and observation that we choose not to look at or accept as viable. Don't forget the fact that Climate Change isn't a "proven science" (just like everything else in the scientific community), so we shouldn't do anything about it yet. The fact that the scientific consensus rivals that of newtons law still shouldn't make us think there could be a chance that Climate Change exists. Remember, all those rich billionaire scientists doing research around the world are just sucking up our tax dollars!
Remember, even though I don't know ***** about science, if it doesn't make sense in my retarded brain, there's no WAY it could exist! Especially when Glenn Beck (high chancellor of scientific matters) preaches against it! - ubenjammin2, on 04/21/2009, -15/+20This time our model is right for sure!
- dzhuo04, on 04/21/2009, -4/+8Newscientist, they dont understand science they just say they want to say, say that to the starving/drowning polar bears
- dzhuo04, on 04/21/2009, -1/+5Its pretty sad how the education system has failed you, again science classes need to teach scientific method at the beginning of each class to reinforce the importance of reproducible data sets that help prove our observations. I feel sorry for you, and the fact that you were cheated out of an education. Really all I'm saying is if they don't cite a source of data, and just say words, that's not science, science is proving our observations through experiments, and analysis of those results.
- redfox2600, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4Speaking of evidence, can someone please point me to the scientific journal where the first article on CO2 level leads to increase temperature correlation was published? I'm serious I can't find it. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. (I prefer Phsyics Today, Journal of the American Chemistry Society etc. no Scientific American please I want to see data tables)
- Asrrin29, on 04/21/2009, -1/+5A self correcting system is always undergoing change. The change may sometimes be too incrementally small to see it over our small life span. But when climate has allowed the human population to swell to almost 7 billion persons, allowed life to live in the fashion it does. When all those millions and billions of years of gradual change get sped up to have momentous changes in little more then a century, you have to ask what is the biggest factor at work. Dumping pollutants into the air has been going on for about the same time, and only willfully ignorant person would say that it doesn't affect our climate at all.
- nOcoNtrol926, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4the whole is the sum of its parts.
- DankBuddz, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4Hey, I hear the price of tin foil has gone up recently. Has that affected your business at all?
- Trent1492, on 04/21/2009, -1/+5Your not paying attention.

- jimv1983, on 04/21/2009, -5/+9Is global warming caused by natural processes? ABSOLUTELY!!!
Is global warming caused by man? ABSOLUTELY!!!
Global warming is caused by people AND a normal cycle. Why don't people get that. If people were not here polluting it might have taken another couple centuries but it still would be happening - DankBuddz, on 04/21/2009, -1/+5http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/2009/ ...
Almost forgot to refute your baseless statement of:
"The earth's temperature peaked in 1998. It's been falling ever since; it dropped dramatically in 2007 and got worse in 2008, when temperatures touched 1980 levels."
The cited website above is the NCDC, they monitor temp anomalies. This is how the changes in the earths temps are monitored.
First of all, international temp averages never got even close to the 1980 levels. Second of all, March 2009 was the 10th warmest on record. I'm not sure where you're getting your ***** data that you're spewing out here for all your denier buddies to eat up, but I suggest you look at real numbers, not those that are fabricated by bloggers on the internet.
Feel free to read through that website as much as you want, its about as credible as it gets. Feel free to submit any of your sources so they can be properly debunked.
Never in my life have I seen so many people base their opinion and belief off of pure rhetoric and faith... excluding religion of course. It is disheartening. - inactive, on 04/21/2009, -5/+8At December's U.N. Global Warming conference, 650 of the world's top climatologists stood up and said man-made global warming is a media generated myth without basis. Said climatologist Dr. David Gee, Chairman of the International Geological Congress, "For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming?"
The earth's temperature peaked in 1998. It's been falling ever since; it dropped dramatically in 2007 and got worse in 2008, when temperatures touched 1980 levels.
The alarmists say that atmospheric CO2 levels are escalating and this is unquestionably causing earth's temperature rise. But ask yourself -- if global temperatures are experiencing the biggest sustained drop in decades, while CO2 levels continue to rise -- how can it be true?
