- mackstann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I thought this was just going to be "hey look at all the ice on the trees and stuff," but jesus christ, that is some massive damage.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7nature never ceases to amaze me
- kmg365, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Ice accumulating on spinning blades of a windmill, Ice accumulating 2 inches thick on steel cables, incredible, talk about The Day After Tomorrow
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That is the strangest fridge replacement I've heard of, but at least they are coping.
- Theta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Very cool, in every sense of the word.
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Am I the only one having fantasies of being Iceman and doing all those cool stuff? Especially the swiss one.
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, I wish we'd get more snow here in Minnesota, I want to ski, damnit!
- genxian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I posted this article with some excellent photos also:
http://www.digg.com/environment/Devestating_Ice_Storm_packs_on_2_inches_of_ice_Pictures - genxian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This storm has now claimed 2900+ miles of power lines, over 13,000 power poles, and 60 million plus dollars of damage. My parents still have no power (one week now). They have been told it could be 2-3 more weeks w/o power. They are forced to cool meals over a wood burning stove.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11You're being overly dramatic. There are lots of areas where this sort of thing happens regularly. The damage is massive, but I suspect that's mostly due to the fact that the infrastructure there isn't built to withstand ice buildup.
- Nearoschyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All that is nothing, the local news station had to move to a different location because they had ice falling off of their tower and piercing their building (!), cars, etc.
It did make driving around on New Year's Eve a hell of a lot of fun, though. Parking lots ftw. - Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow. There's like a 1/4 inch of snow or less on the ground here in Minnesota, and it was 38F or so today.
- valkyries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wow i hope this cop felt proud for doing this after the storm

I'M TRAPPED UNDER ICE! - obendega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those are some great pics as well genxian.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, really, in PA it was almost t-shirt weather (about 15C, or 59F).
- _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So that's where winter went.
- Nickatnite101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That happened where i live once. Every blade of grass froze sticking up and since i lived on a steep hill my drive way was a death trap.
- thephantom1492, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you think that is alot, just look for the ice storm of 1998 in quebec...
Up to 4 inch, but I read report of 5...
Some links: (french, but the pics speak for themself)

Over 50 of those tower collapsed... one after the other...

- swiseman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can have some of ours in Western Washington! We're having one of the coldest/wettest winters on record. Take it, please!
- genxian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here are some additional articles about the damage:

So, why don't you make like a tree and get out of here? - wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@oskite
Those images are unreal. I was curious to find out more about it, and after some research it appears that the one in Switzerland was a different kind of ice storm. It was a combination of cold temperatures and very high winds, causing waves from the lake to blow onto the streets and freeze to anything it touched. It explains how the lake is not frozen, why some of the buildings in the background looked unscathed, and why the very tops of the trees did not freeze. Extremely cool photos nevertheless.
http://www.pbase.com/scherrer/january_2005_ice_storm - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What I noticed was most of the trees looked ok... and we think we're so smart
- dimdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We had a storm like that in the early 90's and we were without running water for 2 weeks and electricity for 4 weeks. But something different around here was the trees. For the first few days if you drove anywhere new you took a chainsaw to clear out the roads.
- genxian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I meant to type they are "forced to cook" over a wood burning stove. Their fridge is currently a rubbermaid cooler in the garage.
- coljung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2did anyone check the link from ICSU ( post # 4 i think ).
WOW, that's an ice storm.
It almost looks as if every picture was photoshopped, which im sure it wasn't.
Mother nature never ceases to amaze me. - kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow those are some great pictures. Towards the end he's got shots of what power transmission towers look like. That's right, ice is no joke.
I can only ever recall one ice storm here in the northeast that really did any damage and that was in 1977. My dad had a quad-yagi on the roof (11m, with some incursions into the 10m band, particularly around 27.415MHz.) that looked like a twisted pretzel after the ice storm.
I wish I had the inclination to photograph that storm back in the 70's. Providence, RI absolutely glittered. - Rachmaninoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The ice on each individual blade of grass is crazy!
- crazydiode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess we've got to that day after tomorrow.... i am yet to see snow this year and i live in DC...
- orbit1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dam! That was crazy. I noticed the Highway 6 sign in one of the photos. Highway 6 is only about 5 miles from my home. It is strange to think that so many miles down that highway (heading west) those conditions existed when here things are very unseasonably mild.
- genxian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1During the night of the storm I was north of Kearney looking towards Kearney. We saw over 30 huge explosions. The explosions looked like huge balls of blue and white light. We discovered these were power poles and transformers exploding as the poles fell over. It looked like freaking bombs falling on Baghdad. Crazy storm.

- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Similar thing happened in Vermont this year, although to a smaller effect. This strand of grass is about half a centimetre.

Unfortunately my memory card corrupted, this is the only remaining photo. But yea, winter was wierd this year. - jax9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is nothing. The town of Badger Newfoundland was hit by a flood in 2003. The flood Froze completly. There was about 3 feet of water in the town when it hit. Cars, homes, and such were frozen in the flood for months.
http://www.snn-rdr.ca/snn/2003mar/badger.html
For six days in January 1998, freezing rain coated Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick with 7-11 cm (3-4 in) of ice. Trees and hydro wires fell and utility poles and transmission towers came down causing massive power outages, some for as long as a month. It was the most expensive natural disaster in Canada. According to Environment Canada, the ice storm of 1998 directly affected more people than any other previous weather event in Canadian history.
High tension power lines bent like matchsticks. Whole towns had no power or utilities for a month. there was one small town in quebec that converted a diesel train for use as an emergency power source. It was truly apocolyptic there for a while...

http://www.collectioncanada.ca/sos/002028-5101-e.html - quantumcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like we got off easy. We had no power, heat or water for 4 days and I was going nuts.
Oh, BTW... never walk under a tree when the ice starts melting. Those chunks hurt when they hit!
Also, it IS possible to BBQ at 20 F. :) - networkjedi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was a hell of a storm (I'm in Nebraska, right around where that happened). Power is still down for quite a few people and internet was out all around the state because of the widespread, long-term power losses. I'm sure it's Global Warming!!
- NORTHCOAST, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1some beautiful images (from afar)
- extant59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pictures like this make me happy i moved back to california from nebraska. well... that and the baseball sized hail that dented my car up... not the tornadoes so much though oddly enough.
- deerhake11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1we had something alot like this 2 years ago in northwest ohio...
http://flickr.com/photos/deerhake11/348809507/in/set-72157594464631336/ - wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was a much, much, much worse one up north in Quebec in 1998, but like Shakin said, it's a pretty common occurrence.
