- sockmonkeyfun, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14This is very cool. I am a weather geek and love radar maps. In Oregon there is almost always something up there to see. :)
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6Exactly what the Wii needs to make Forecase Channel more interesting.
Not that it already isn't, I could look up the temperature of the South Pole all day. - Lingur, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5Heh, there's a town in Virginia called "Little Johnsontown". I should live there.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Little+Johnsontown&sll=37.43628,-75.8581&sspn=0.096231,0.237579&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=13&iwloc=addr
Found it while perusing the weather.com map :) - rkzda, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8You should live there because you have a little Johnson or what?
- diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Its okay, but I thought interactive would mean I could move storm systems around. ;)
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I use the ForecastFox Enhanced module for Firefox, which does something very similar. Not only can you have a multi-day forecast at the bottom of your web browser window, but there's also a radar icon you can mouse over at any time and it will popup an animated radar display.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1978/ - Rodzirra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow... It's crummy everywhere in the US today.
- johnjohnstonson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1why cant you guys be more specific? heaven forbid anyone that uses digg is NOT american. I spent ages trying to get it to work for taiwan before i realised its only available for murca. This should be titled 'weather.com's new interactive map of the usa is amazing'. This site is so US-centric, just like the majority of murcans.
- johnjohnstonson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3and rodzirra, that has to be the most accurate comment anyone has ever said about the US. well done.
- Elephant789, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This sucks people. I checked the area where I live when I woke up and nothing. I just checked again, 7 hours later, and still nothing. Just a regular map. Is this limited to a certain location only?
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6Exactly what the Wii needs to make Forecase Channel more interesting.
- BlakeHandler, on 10/12/2007, -17/+1Cool -- I'm also impressed with the new weather site too!
http://weathernews.com/wpfglobal.xbap - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -13/+11Dugg because the Weather Channel is awesome.
- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46Dude! You should totally check out what’s on now: The Weekly Forecast!
- justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8*tivo'd*
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4good timing, its snowing here.
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Wow, now instead of simply looking out my school's library window, I can see the East Coast Snow storm in near real time using Internet.
About 3 inches so far accumulated since I arrived here 3 hours ago. Buffalo, NY - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1yeah because its very easy to keep track of a storm by just simply looking out of the window, great job. You're a winner.
- Spiritcatcher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Pat Robertson is the only mofo that I know of who moves storms around. Hurricanes specifically.
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Wow, now instead of simply looking out my school's library window, I can see the East Coast Snow storm in near real time using Internet.
- Cyre, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2I wish I'da knows about this site last night when all the tornadoes were moving thru my area!
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13dunno, it might have been a good thing that you were safe in your basement instead of surfing the internets...
right? - rkzda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not if his main pc is in the basement like mine and many others I know.
- Cyre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2My house doesn't have a basement...
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You're screwed.
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13dunno, it might have been a good thing that you were safe in your basement instead of surfing the internets...
- staffell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0according to this post, there's a perperual sandstorm
- kingfelix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2wow. why has it taken so long for someone to put together a radar layer like this? this is awesome. anyone want to place bets on how long it will take google to come up with something similar for google maps?
- ziki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1well considering it's powered by microsoft, i wouldn't doubt it
- louis74, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm with tidu.. wii weather is neat.. but add real time data like this and boom I'd use it
- word9995, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1This would be a great screen saver.
- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1Not Google Earth? Pass.
- masterofNone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4flash is taking over the web.
- amightywind, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2Requires Flash, ergo sucks.
- patik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I suppose you completely disable JavaScript too. Your web experience must suck.
- Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4
Well I think I agree with this guy's message, that the web is being dragged down by dopey bandwidth-stealing bells-and-whistles like Flash, CSS, web forms, and paragraph tags. Why can't web developers leave well enough alone and stick with the original 1993 spec?
Personally, I don't let Flash run for safety reasons. I always browse with Javascript, cookies, and Flash turned off by default, and a popup blocker. I turn off all ActiveX controls and scripting, no Java, and I don't let my browser connect to web pages that are being dynamically generated or sent to the browser by any sort of server. I then make sure that my browser is not running at all before surfing to any web site, as well as disconnecting my cable modem both at the LAN port and the coax. That prevents port sniffing as I understand it.
It may seem like a bit of a hassle, but I've only had five or six viruses and trojans in the last week, so you can't argue with success.
- Zolk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5And it even works in Safari.
- gr3yn3t, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Hm, I was under the impresssion that 'MIRACULOUS' was the new amazing.
guess i was wrong - zoombusa, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2It shows that it is snowing but when I zoom in I don't see any snow on the ground. LOL
- zoombusa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1now why do you people digg me down for being funny. jezzzz
- pixelsoup, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3That's amazing?
The only thing amazing is that you somehow chose not to use 5 exclamation points - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2This bloody snowstorm is irking me!
- vawksel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Eh... its nice, but "amazing", not to me.
- CoreBurn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah www.weatherbonk.com shows a lot more information and works in either the browser or Google Earth.
- mikewashere05, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1-Looks outside-
No snow in Connecticut. :( - BobaFettTDG, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7ZOMG it's raining in Seattle NO WAII!!1
- solowCX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2O RLY? Not raining here...
- DarkPrince11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ironic, I look outside and its a clear night, I check the radar and it says Im supposed to have like snow...(In Deer Park, NY btw)...:/
- donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5....so im thinking this map is USA only at the moment??? siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh...
- wasd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree, its amazing. Been telling people but they don't care. I still think its pretty sweet :)
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I zoomed into my house and all I saw was a layer of white with some crap underneath. Ya its snowing...
- jwoelker, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Would have dugg, except I reported this 3 months ago:
http://www.jeffwoelker.com/2006/12/19/weather-channel-testing-new-interactive-map/ - TimTim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow! It took two days for this to show up on Digg!
It's still cool though! - Brows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is not Amazing, it's nice but not Amazing. btw, you could do this in Google Earth for more than a year now
- haonanzhang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2can I display the map in full screen by itself?
- acey049, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here you go
http://image.weather.com/web/flash/FMMain.swf - GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That link (at least for me) makes it by itself, but not full screen.
- acey049, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Try right clicking on a black area of the page and then click "zoom in". Right click in the black area again and click "Show All" to have a bigger version of the original, including the controls. Sometimes it depends on where in the black area you click on.
Then, if in Firefox click View > Full Screen (or F11).
In IE7, click Tools > Full Screen (or F11) - patik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or change your display resolution to 640x480 and shrink the browser window down until it fits. But that's just no fun.
- smilesman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9http://image.weather.com/web/flash/FMMain.swf?viewPortWidth=1000&viewPortHeight=800&initialWeatherLayerType=radar&initialZoomLevel=5
Resolution is much nicer this way...
- acey049, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here you go
- Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Micro$uck Virtual Earth stinks. Google Earth FTW.
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wow...you possibly can't expect to not get buried for this bit of pathetic fanboyism, could you? It is just a matter of which os hte MANY reasons you gave people to bury you they will choose. Will it be the $, that hasn't been used by regular people for years? OR will it be the FTW, which has NEVER been used by anyone with any social skills? Or will it be your blind hatred of anything Microsoft, since Virtual Earth has definite advantages (as well as disadvatnages) over Google EArth?
- Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whatever d00d. Micro$oft makes sucky software. It full of bugs and not secure.
- jukin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yet, they still can't predict what weather will happen tomorrow.
- daggett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I second that... although they do pretty well with the next day forecast, I've learned not to trust their 7-day forecasts. Why do they even bother?
- cmost, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0I don't use Microsoft software thank you very much. I'll pass.
- TheGuruStud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Buried for Microsoft being mentioned positively in the article :P
- kenvibe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've never used "Microsoft's Virtual Earth," but I must say its not that bad. Its a copy, but there are some pretty cool features as well...
- cplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uses Flash (yuck) while gmaps uses AJAX (nice).
"No radar" message for my areas - its useless.
No satellite photo for anything close to my area - I'll take gmaps, thanks.- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Flash is yuck and AJAX nice? Interesting...
- davekoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm going to have to say I do think this thing is pretty cool. We had a major ice storm here in Iowa this past weekend and this was a pretty cool tool to track the storm down to the street level.
- kiloWatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This makes me wish I hadn't failed my GIS class!
- Celt23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0http://www.wikimapia.org is alot better, unless you want to know where it's raining.
- jimbobaii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a superb use of our technology. I wish we had a UK equivalent
- blackbrutha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This Sh*t is tight. Bookmarked like a mutha.
- shreela, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I clicked and clicked where I live, and thought it was lame. Until I thought about how it's about 70'ish with a few clouds outside. So I went up to the NE where the pink showed snow activity, and chose the button for radar and clouds and watched the animation. A bit more exciting, but not much. Maybe I'll watch it again next time there's a hurricane or tornado storms.
- alexhuyalegzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't believe it! I've never thought it is for real.
- westsnoop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The doppler map is superiot in every way to this abortion.
- hitmark, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I agree, its amazing.
- prfcteclipse99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0How do i make it a little bit smaller of resolution to the following link...when i click on this link the bottom controls dont show up...can someone please make it a little smaller to show everything in the map? Here is the example... by smilesman on 02/25/2007
