- obliviousfool, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3You are a moron. Baleen whales eat krill, and krill require sea ice. The krill are very fragile in their larval stages. They need sea ice for shelter, and they also eat the algae which grows on the underside of the ice.
No sea ice, no krill. No krill, no baleen whales.
We've already seen populations of krill replaced by jellies which are essentially worthless as a food source to whales.
If the whales do go extinct, and I certainly hope they don't, we'll know for sure that the temperature of the earth has passed a point it hasn't passed for over 500 million years.

Here is a picture of krill feeding on algae on the underside of sea ice to illustrate my point. - bosssmiley, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Dugg for interesting and informative krill factoids.
(another combination of words I never thought I'd write...) - Cate320, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1This is sad news. Go whale watching while you still can! :(
Seriously, Go. It's heaps of fun. - greenfyre, on 06/19/2008, -1/+2fairymunchkin is right, the impacts of climate change if left unchecked will be devastating to all species.
btw, we are talking multiple species here, not just one. - fairymunchkin, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't say the ocean is too big for that to happen with the way we are fishing it to death. And sharks have been around since before the dinosaurs and they are dying out as well.
- PoliticalMan922, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1It is definitely scary what is happening with our climate. I do hope that something is done to try and prevent the extinction of an entire species. We can only hope. :-/
- davecoyc, on 06/19/2008, -1/+1I did digg this but come on the whales are one of the oldest species I highly doubt a little warming will whipe them out. the only way I see this happening is if there size they some how run out of food but the ocean is to big for that

What is Digg?
