- greengarfield, on 06/26/2008, -1/+16volcanoes, air, water...there's energy around us everywhere and yet we still depend on oil?
- slayerab, on 06/26/2008, -1/+15What happens when the volcano erupts
- Fraize, on 06/27/2008, -0/+14What could go wrong?
- Chainheart, on 06/27/2008, -0/+9Hawaii
- DimensionalPunk, on 06/27/2008, -0/+9I think we should clone dinosaurs and put them in big hamster wheels.
- wonderchemist, on 06/27/2008, -2/+10We elected an oil man president, what did you expect?
- wynja, on 06/26/2008, -1/+9Hell, if we figured out how to safely tap the energy reserve in Yellowstone Caldera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_Caldera), then we could supply all the energy needs of this country very cheaply.
- jjacksonRIAB, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Tesla doesn't appreciate your sarcasm.
Not only can electricity be transmitted wirelessly, but it may also be transmitted with fairly low loss given high voltage.
Additionally, I take it you haven't heard of creating intermediate fuels like hydrogen? You do realize we take oil thousands of miles across the ocean to bring it here, don't you? - hapax, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7We've had lava lamps for years now.
- freehunter, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6Last time I checked, Clinton wasn't an oil man, and how many cars were driving around using lava during his administration?
- tnoy, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6While its not going to supply power for all of the US, it could easily supply power to most all of Alaska and sold to many parts of Canada.
Transferring power over a distance of a few thousand miles is being done today without a significant loss, especially when they get up to the 500-1000KV range. - kenvsryu, on 06/27/2008, -1/+7Which countries have volcanoes and a dictator? We need a new war.
- nascentia, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6If we use volcanoes for power, I know what's next...Cheney building a secret base in one.
- thegreatgazoo, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4Because they explode, and when they do that it would spread the nuclear waste all over the Earth.
It doesn't just melt and going away. - KingGorilla, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4We might anger the volcano gods Then we'd have to sacrifice a digger
- lettruthout, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Renewable energy in Iceland has supplied over 70% of Iceland's primary energy needs since 1999...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewable_energy_in_I ...
Now's the time for us to follow their lead. - Moonkeeper, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Volcanoes shall now be called "redlands" and will be off limits to all development. We will lobby Congress to make sure this happens.
Love,
The Sierra Club - hapax, on 06/27/2008, -2/+5I've always been thinking, why can't we just dump nuclear waste in volcanoes?
- Spartycus, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4Seriously.... So Bush is a moron and his family made ts money from oil, our current situation is hardly due to screw ups during the last 8 years.
- TheStrongForce, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Nuclear is great, but you need a diverse portfolio. That's why.
- bincoder, on 06/26/2008, -1/+4This doesn't have to be done just in Alaska, the west and southwest part of the US has plenty more volcanoes to choose from. Doesn't matter if most of them are 'dormant' (for the time being).
A little drilling in less than obvious places can get you a lot of energy. Like building an expensive nuclear plant but cheaper and safer. - edebolt, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3They have figure out a way to prevent a lot of sulfuric acid from escaping into the air when they tap Geothermal vents. In Hawaii they have a GEO thermal plant on the big island near Kapaa and it stinks to high heaven. The environmentalists really oppose it and have blocked other plants. It's not so bad once your a few miles away. If they can figure a way to tap it without the stink then I am all for it.
- bigbenorr, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Iceland practically IS a volcano, they have plentiful of available geothermal vents everywhere, so I hate to sound like a bitch but its really just not fair.
- Zector, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3There was an episode of Coneheads where the kid or something made a working model of a Volcano power source for their city/town thing. The kid then wins a medal, or Science Fair or something.... I was like 7 at the time, so I don't recall the specifics of the show, but I have always thought it was an amazing idea.
Or maybe it wasn't Coneheads at all, I have no idea what I'm talking about. ): - IamZed, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Didn't Dana Andrews try this in Crack in the World?
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Well, yes you can sue, but the supreme court will reduce your settlement 20 years later...
- hapax, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Microwave Plant needs to be invented first before Fusion Plant. Don't get me started on Arcologies.
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Hey baby, my house runs on volcano power! Wana come over and see if we can make an eruption?
- rakerman, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Just remember what happened in Dinosaurs episode 2x20: "Robbie comes up with an idea for tapping the geothermal energy of volcanoes to heat the homes of all Pangaea. The idea is taken seriously by the government and Robbie seems to be a hero, except that his plan for free energy threatens the business interests of the WESAYSO Corporation which sell energy for a profit." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dinosaurs_epi ...
- Wootstapler, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Wow, Geothermal energy as been around for years, and we're just thinking about it now?
- tnoy, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Geothermal power has been around for decades.
- Mononuclear, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2That was pineapples and a dictator.. the volcanoes were just icing o the cake.
- WiseWeasel, on 06/26/2008, -1/+3Do you have to draw straws to determine who gets to fix the leaky pipes? I hope they can automate the construction and maintenance of these power plants, because exploiting volcanoes seems like quite the hazardous job. It's nice to see more support for geothermal energy though; you couldn't ask for a more perfect clean energy source for sustained round-the-clock large scale power needs.
- jcaino, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2thats where hopefully research into superconductivity at room temps would come in handy.
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2We tap nuclear reactors.
- blowhole, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I see what you did there.
/technical digger - zdiggler, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2We need to find a way to tap the power from Earth's Inner core!!!!!!
- TheStrongForce, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Hempydave, a volcano is connected to the Earth's supply of Magma, which is practically unlimited. When you cool something, it sinks due to density. It would travel towards the center of the earth while the hot magma would come to the surface. This would be impossible cool.
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2AWESOME
Now if only the government would give them a bridge to build to nowhere as well!!
Oops.... - Kanten, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I saw this episode of Stargate Atlantis. The volcano destroys the planet.
- fireburner23, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Any good idea is an rejected idea in the US.
- wayne247, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2tags: volcano, power, energy, whatcouldpossiblygowrong
- ancientdinko, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2sounds like a great place to throw your garbage too.
- reddog093, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1How have we not figured out how to tap such a hot, massive force for energy yet?
- looselips, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Fixed it..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_Caldera - fireburner23, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1When are 535 members of Congress going to start being blamed? What about all those State congresses? We can easily blame those people too.
Do we need to blame Bush for everything?! Just remember, he is only the puppet in this whole thing. - inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I propose regenerative left-mouse button clicks kind of like regenerative brakes on cars. Creating oil independence with clicks. Turn porn into a positive thing....
- KillerStone, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1They could also supply 100% of the US needs for all things badass.
