- bosssmiley, on 04/14/2008, -1/+39Lasers? thunderstorms? Pure mad science. I envy these men their work.
- Exhibitionist, on 04/14/2008, -1/+29"If we could somehow harness this bolt of lightning, channel it into the flux capacitor, it just might work!"
- windmarble, on 04/14/2008, -3/+19Somehow, someone will turn it into a weapon.
- gothicform, on 04/14/2008, -1/+15The implications for this from a point of power generation are *massive*. If you can then make lightning strike at a particular point and develop a way of storing it you can power the entire planet. It seems they've gone some way to solving the first part. Now all they need is the ability to store a billion gigawatts.
- Shadowgamers, on 04/14/2008, -1/+13It's only a matter of time before Moscow and its Tesla Coils are destroyed by a mysterious lightning storm...
- Exbzurq, on 04/14/2008, -0/+12I put on my H.E.V suit and glasses.
- jordan314, on 04/14/2008, -2/+13I thought digg taught me that Benjamin Franklin didn't actually do the kite string experiment.
- CTK14A, on 04/14/2008, -1/+12Great, can we use this to harvest the energy from lightning?
- troycott, on 04/14/2008, -1/+11Old news. Through Red Alert, I was using this technology to annihilate the Soviets in 1998.
- azAZ09, on 04/14/2008, -2/+12But where are the sharks? C'mon throw me a bone here people, all I asked for is ....
- muckemuck, on 04/14/2008, -2/+12ahhh.. I can't wait for the Navy to have frickin' sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their frickin' heads so they can zap enemy ships.
- yngtimmy, on 04/14/2008, -1/+10Maybe a flux-capacitor? oh wait thats only rated at 1.21 gigawatts.
- RandomTaskMan, on 04/14/2008, -1/+10Sounds like something outta C&C
next an Ion cannon will be announced
and then there goes the neighborhood... - Grimdotdotdot, on 04/14/2008, -0/+7BIG ***** capacitors?
- Harabeck, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8Baldy? Ive been up there, its in Philmont, a backpacking camp for Boy Scouts. I wonder if any got to watch the experiment. It rains every day in that area, which is why I guess they chose it.
- trp5023, on 04/14/2008, -2/+9... The potential for this to go bad is almost as great as the "canned tornado" wind turbine plants proposed a couple years ago.
Also: dugg for taking place at Philmont Scout Ranch!
Also: I call dibs on shouting "You fools! You blind fools, you've damned us all!!!" at Kasparian and his team.
Also: Kasparian sounds suspiciously like the cover name for a Marvel Villian, just saying. - biff198, on 04/14/2008, -0/+7Wait wait wait....
Scientists use LASERS to fire LIGHTNING BOLTS!? How could this possibly get any cooler? - dsmx, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6If you can figure out a way of storing the all that energy in a fraction of a second then yes.
- slimjim5811, on 04/14/2008, -2/+8Name this movie:
Bartender: He's been struck by lightning... how many times has it been now, Reg?
Reg: S-s-s-s-s-s-s-six...
Chet: Six times?
Reg: S-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-six-sixty-sixty-six times. In-n-n-n-n-n-n-In-n-n-n-n-n-n-In-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n the head! - TheSpook, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6Who needs lasers? Just mount a golf club to a power pole. Of course, lasers ARE frickin' cool.
- Firehed, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6You don't store it in a metal key attached to a kite string?
- Kisama, on 04/14/2008, -1/+7Buried for even referencing Benjamin Franklin and the experiment that never happened.
- delvach, on 04/14/2008, -1/+7Nope. The summary is pretty misleading, scientists have been able to 'capture' lightning for years using rockets with thin conductive wires attached. It's just the method they're using that's new.
- marcusbrutus, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5Ion Cannons are too easy to take off line. If you see a Temple of Nod going up in your neighborhood then I'd be worried.
- zanderw00t, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5I put on my chains and leather...
Wait, am I at the wrong party? - bootstrap, on 04/14/2008, -1/+5Weather control device ready.
RA2 did it already - NeoNevermore, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4The Great Outdoors
- troon, on 04/14/2008, -2/+6You can't store power (watts). You can only store energy (joules, or watt-seconds). Physics lesson over for today - go and enjoy the sunshine, or the backlight from your monitor, whichever floats your boat.
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4Powering the delorean suddenly got easier...
- JustGrant, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4Do not show this to Bush.
- talonstriker, on 04/14/2008, -3/+71) Create clouds
2) Create lightning
3) Destroy Enemy
4) ???
5) Profit - EdgeOfEpsilon, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4The capacitors don't care. Charging or discharging, it's all just current.
Usually caps are used for pulsed power so they do behave like that. The limit on charging rate is because we don't *have* that much power, not that the capacitor can't handle it. - NodOfficer, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3I equip my trusty crowbar...
- Dumbledorito, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3I was listening to "Whadd'ya Know?" on NPR a few months back, and one of the contestants was a woman who, along with her husband, got to test munitions and weapons for the Navy. Their job was to basically blow stuff up all day long. When asked what the job was like, she replied, "pretty cool."
This is better, but still in the same ballpark. - Lazydriver, on 04/14/2008, -1/+4Dugg for RA reference.
- EdgeOfEpsilon, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Super Proton Synchrotron, I'll bet.
How's the weather in Geneva this time of year? - Harabeck, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Oh well fine, take away my tenuous connectio to the story.
- BOFH2, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Great Outdoors, it was on this weekend on Starz
- HonestAbe, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Maybe, but the lightning follows the path of the laser beam. So you'll have to convince the enemy to hold up a big mirror for you to bounce it off of. I think plain old bullets might be a better method.
- rodbotic, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2what motor is going to accelerate that fast to create enough back EMF to handle that current
- talonstriker, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2so 5) should be "Get into debt"?
- NYankee2003, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3buried for "Franklin's kite"... I believe we had a Cracked list about that...
http://digg.com/comedy/The_5_Most_Ridiculous_Lies_ ... - tool4life, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I've been praying for a resonance cascade effect for a few years now. This might be my lucky break. All those weekends spent in the basement practicing my crowbar wielding skills might finally pay off.
- LeRenard, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Editted, it's already been pointed out the author lost credibility the moment they mentioned Franklin.
- rodbotic, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2ion cannons are easy. I have a CW ION gun at work. (Continuous Wave).
- Frost9999, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Step 4 is - Rebuild their infrastructure with your own contractors.
- HonestAbe, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2You can do crazy ***** with high-powered pulse lasers. It's not what you think. It actually heats up the air so much that the air changes its index of refraction, which focuses the laser even more, which heats up the air even more, etc. etc. Filaments of plasma traveling through the air. Really weird stuff.
- SpookyApplePie, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3Take off your Tin Foil Hats people
