When did we pick up an extra 10 states? - Berkana, on 11/28/2007, -2/+22Why wait 18 years? You can cut your energy usage in half now. Install a solar water heater (way cheaper than photovoltaics--solar hot water pays for itself faster than any other solar tech except for skylights and sunlight tubes.) if you live in the sun belt. Exchange all your incandescent bulbs for CFLs (except for your oven light and your fridge lights; CFLs don't belong in there) and use timers to turn off the power to electronic equipment that would otherwise slowly sap electricity on standby. Even better than CFLs: skylights. There's no point to using an energy efficient bulb that uses less than half the wattage of an incandescent if you can use a skylight, which uses 0 watts of electricity.
This isn't that hard to do. Why should it take 18 years to do this on a widespread basis? It shouldn't. If people knew how much money a few skylights would save them, people would be on this right away.
There's no good reason for supermarkets with broad flat rooftops to use fluorescent lights during the day when they can just use the light of the sun for free. If only all supermarkets simply installed skylights with diffusers to soften the rays of the sun, we'd be saving 50% on our energy costs almost immediately. - jaksauce, on 11/28/2007, -2/+19This is something everyone needs to be a part of!
- nepdogg, on 11/28/2007, -2/+18so in 18 years, we'll be at 3,024,717,000 metric tons of CO2 per year, which is what the EU is at right now with roughly the same population size. Perfect.
- chuckDontSurf, on 11/28/2007, -4/+19To paraphrase George Carlin: save the ***** planet?? The planet will be fine; humans are the ones who'll be screwed.
- tsaylor, on 11/28/2007, -0/+9LED is not affordable. The payback period for CFL's is a few months, and LED bulbs are what, 6 times that cost?
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -4/+13Mass energy consumption = dependence on foreign oil = middle east wars = neocon wet dream
- SouthsideIrish, on 11/28/2007, -0/+8I just watched a commercial for CFL's. Yadayada. Switch to CFL's and save the enviroment. NO! Switch to CFL's because they last longer, use last energy and will save you money.
Nothing like greed will get people to switch. I don't think I have any incandescent bulbs in my house. - OswaldKenobi, on 11/28/2007, -2/+10That is my question. The article does not talk about the cost on implementation. Digg this down all you want, but cost is a huge factor in how we proceed.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -13/+20We COULD, but with the GOP in charge it won't happen.
Here's to hoping we save the planet in 08. - Pilot85, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7states + energy companies + organizations. It was just worded a bit awkwardly, lol.
- tunapez, on 11/28/2007, -4/+11Fluorescent or LED adoption would save that at least in private and public sectors, and the tech is here and affordable TODAY.
Other easy, $ savers to do today: drop the temp on the water heater so it's not scalding hot, HVAC on a timer, adjust fridge/freezer settings, turn off heat dry on the dishwasher....unplug the boob-tube in the living room. - insanebrain, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6He didn't get the memo.
- zanzzz, on 11/28/2007, -1/+6Conservatives against conserving energy. Talk about intellectually bankrupt!
- davenport651, on 11/29/2007, -0/+5How long until CFLs are produced in America? I'm sick of supporting the environment by supporting the Chinese Economy.
- seanhive, on 11/28/2007, -1/+6Don't knock this, 50% is ***** huge numbers. That means by the time we're at 50%, we'll still be rolling hard and won't stop there--or we'll already have achieved it before the 18 year mark. Technology is exponential, as long as the attention is being put to the subject like it's starting to get now, it's gonna move very fast in a very positive direction.
- SouthsideIrish, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5Of course it is, and it grows like a weed, but the DEA keeps confiscating because it is illegal
- empraptor, on 11/28/2007, -1/+6A lot of people are doing it.
It's people like you who only consider short-term costs who choose the less efficient route. But they will come around, I think. - bolerobell, on 11/28/2007, -2/+6That's an excuse if I've ever heard one. We have to put our own house in order before we'll have the moral authority to get anyone else to. Besides which, currently, India and China both only have a fraction of the CO2 emissions as the US, despite having over three times the population... each.
Man, I'm tired of that excuse... "But but but but... what about China!?!" - kutcher506, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4They're including energy companies and environmental organizations as part of the 60, I would guess.
- duke_nate, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4That, and skylights Kick Ass. :-)
- renegadeafk, on 11/28/2007, -2/+6pfft where have you been man
- FortyCaliber, on 11/28/2007, -3/+7Unless those hicks are providing valuable services with those V10s... Like moving large pieces of equipment tools and supplies across their multi-hunder-acre farm to raise food to feed the cow you eat.
You CAN"T FARM WITH A PRIUS - simpleid, on 11/28/2007, -1/+5everything seems to take '20 years' to happen, and when it does, it's never as cool as when it was originally advertised...
- insanebrain, on 11/28/2007, -0/+4You could, so you should. You're burried.
- johnwc723, on 11/29/2007, -1/+5half the hicks i see with V10s dont even have a trailer hitch, or at least one that means there towing more than what a mini-van can tow
- geekee, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3The reason we burn oil is it's a cheap source of energy. This will not be the case forever, which will drive other entrepreneurs to find cheaper sources of energy and make their own fortunes at the expense of the Saudis.
- Anagrama, on 11/28/2007, -1/+4I'm all for it. I have started switching light bulbs in my house (except for the dining room chandelier where there seems to be a wiring problem and I go through about 10 light bulbs a month).
That said, the only people in the US (albeit it is a majority) who want this to happen are the main population. Those "in power" don't want it because that money "saved" by the population simply wouldn't be going into their hands. I believe they will do everything they can to make sure our money gets into their pockets. If that means decreased energy SAVINGS, they'll do it.
And no, I don't have the answer...... - 1charmedlife, on 11/29/2007, -0/+3Here's a question - so besides changing your freakin' lightbulbs, what else can RENTERS do?
Millions and millions of us do not own our homes, and can't put in skylights or efficient appliances - hell, I can't even get them to put insulation in the apartments for gods sake, or fix a leaky roof.
How does anyone propose getting landlords of multi-family units to do *anything* about energy use in rental properties? - WKUHilltopper, on 11/28/2007, -2/+5"U.S. Could Cut Energy Use in Half in 18 Years"
Yeah, because with the collapse of the dollar, half of us will be living in cardboard boxes... - geekee, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3If the govt doesn't do anything, the free market will when oil is at $100+/barrel.
- Barbarino, on 11/28/2007, -1/+4Hot Water heaters are outdated, instant heaters are here and you'll save so much money and energy and it's limitless, no more cold showers..
- Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 11/28/2007, -1/+4I would think that it would pay itself off quite quickly. Money would be saved from energy costs, and a new manufacturing market will emerge, both of which put money into the economy. Maybe I'm wrong, but thats my .02
- buckrogers1965, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3We need some good articles on how to trick out our cardboard homes.
- hankmt, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2OK...uhhh...just thought I'd point out that the original article (that this very brief retelling came from) is entitled:
"Efficiency Could Cut Growth in U.S. Energy Use in Half"
GROWTH in use...not use. A little more realistic...a lot more depressing.
http://www.eere.energy.gov/news/news_detail.cfm/ne ... - topace3000, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2Ahh a poorly written article that's 50% good intentions and 50% pipe dream.
- MattB123, on 11/28/2007, -2/+4Or even more. I think LED will be the way to save a lot of energy and money in the future, but right now the cost to get in is a big deterrent.
- hankmt, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2sorry...link broke:
http://www.eere.energy.gov/news/news_detail.cfm/ne ... - crazyhorse13, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3"...and it will save the nation $500 billion on energy costs over time."
yet another vague article - insanebrain, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3I read your reply 6 times but I still don't know what you are trying to say. . .maybe we need to save this money so we can educate stupid morons like you.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3If my boob-tube was ever unplugged... the country would have much worse things to worry about.
- climateHeretic, on 11/29/2007, -0/+2You just killed your impact with the one line "I am building a new house". Why? something wrong with the old one, save all the resources and CO2 emissions from new home construction and stay put or are you one of those only "Green" as a bragging right type of guys.
- twomeyw23334, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2I bought a bunch of CFLs for my home. Problem is, here in NH when it gets cold they hardly work. They come on real dim and then take 10 minutes to warm up before they actually light up the room. I could jack my heat up to solve that problem but I think the excess gas bill would far out way my electrical savings.
- frostbyt, on 11/28/2007, -1/+3I highly doubt it would save money this way. Other departments in the government would see the extra capital as a green light to open up tractor tire burning plants and outside air conditioning facilities.
- andrgo, on 11/28/2007, -5/+7I hope they increase the intelligence of our country by half so another Bush doesn't get in.
- robio, on 11/29/2007, -1/+2Energy efficiency does not help the environment in fact it has been proven to increase emissions and fossil fuel usage.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM ...
Just check that out. - jackmaninov, on 11/28/2007, -1/+2Don't get too excited here people. TheDailyGreen's story title is inaccurate; the original article is about how energy efficiency could cut energy GROWTH by 50% between now and 2025. Very poor reading comprehension on their part :(
- Rhodamine, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1These are very real concerns indeed. These issues are addressed (but far from solved) in a great read called "The Long Emergency" by James Howard Kunstler. If he is correct, we are in for some drastic changes as conventional fuel sources dwindle.
http://www.amazon.com/Long-Emergency-Converging-Ca ... - tomatopad, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1A $40 water heater timer will save you about $15 per month, takes an hour to install. I bought $800 in new double paned windows on CraigsList, added $200 in insulation and drywall, oil use went down 60%, pay back time is well under 3 years. Windows are cheap now that the housign bubble is over.
- inactive, on 11/29/2007, -1/+2Good little rightard.
You are doing exactly what the GOP expects of you. -
