- sustainablogger, on 12/27/2008, -5/+131This is great news. In terms of resources, the US is the Saudi Arabia of wind... glad to see these resources are being used.
- N1tro, on 12/28/2008, -15/+105yea America has blown for 8 years...
- stephenmeb, on 12/28/2008, -8/+92Freedom Wind Bitches
- dayal911, on 12/28/2008, -9/+75And it had NOTHING to do with Obama. Imagine that.
- iSeven, on 12/27/2008, -4/+62Finally.
- hawkspur, on 12/28/2008, -0/+52What makes wind energy viable is the abundance of "wind corridors" around the US where the wind is blowing a vast majority of the time. They don't just throw up the wind farms in the middle of nowhere and hope for windy days.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -2/+52Sweet, I can recycle a joke.
The US is windy because Mexico sucks and Canada blows. - andytandreou, on 12/28/2008, -5/+40Europe now has almost three-fourths of the world's wind energy capacity, and European companies manufacture about 80 percent of all wind turbines sold.
More than 240 MW of wind turbines are now spinning offshore, all of them in Europe, with an additional 20,000 MW proposed for areas surrounding northern Europe.
The European Wind Energy Association predicts that total European wind energy capacity could exceed 200 gigawatts (GW) by 2010.
Hmmm, let's see. SUCK ON THAT USA! - soundchaser, on 12/28/2008, -14/+46really not that big a feat, given that USA is about 27 times larger in land area and almost four times the population of germany. not to mention the geographical diversity that the USA possesses and germany doesn't which would support the potential for wind generation.
it's about time, really. - decay, on 12/28/2008, -19/+50AMERICA! ***** yeah?
- WayOutWest, on 12/28/2008, -10/+37Great to see this on the front page. The US is not as bad as people think.
- stoanhart, on 12/28/2008, -0/+25I think that was an attempt at some sort of joke about Bush being a windbag or something.
- V3NOM, on 12/28/2008, -3/+25Germany still beats us percentage-wise, but this is good news nonetheless. Glad to hear progress is being made!
- novenator, on 12/27/2008, -2/+23um, no. There are zero emissions and the killing bird rumors are a myth. Wind energy is clean energy, and something we need to invest in heavily.
- soccerman90, on 12/28/2008, -2/+22hm im not sure. im used to seeing it in only the sarcastic sense when america ***** up somehow, but this is good... ill allow it
AMERICA COMING TO SAVE THE ***** DAY, YEAH! - Duffalpha, on 12/28/2008, -22/+40SUCK ON THAT EUROPE!
- WeSaluteYou, on 12/28/2008, -1/+1891 million barrels... that negates... 10 days of oil consumption by US cars.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -2/+18Hahaha, you guys fail at sarcasm detection. +1 zxczxcv.
- novenator, on 12/27/2008, -5/+21Wind power is an excellent way for us to decrease our dependence on foreign oil. It has been, and will continue to expand exponentially over the coming decade.

a good map that displays the potential for wind farms can be found at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US_wind_power_ma ... - metapop, on 12/27/2008, -1/+15are you serious? i find that hard to believe... maybe i'm missing something.
- ekSD, on 12/28/2008, -1/+15Twice the size of Missouri.
Missouri: 69,704 sq mi
Germany: 137,847 sq mi
I live in Germany, and seriously, I think it's quite an accomplishment for the U.S. to surpass it. Mainly because while Germany does have wind "farms" with many mills in one area, they also just have random ones here and there, dotting the country. They really push them in to wherever they have space for them. It's not uncommon to drive by one or two literally on the edge of the Autobahn, just chillin. - metapop, on 12/28/2008, -2/+16the best jokes are those without need for explanation.
- hartley, on 12/28/2008, -4/+18Good. Now can we work on some battery technology to actually store this power?
- biotch, on 12/28/2008, -0/+13less oil than they will save in the long run.
- MAGZine, on 12/28/2008, -3/+16Yes, more windmills are in order.
- zxczxcv, on 12/28/2008, -3/+16Amazing. Before you know it, we'll have wind power on boats. We're workin' our way back top guys. +1 America
- ciaran036, on 12/28/2008, -2/+14See, the problem is not America. America is fantastic. The people are great.
The problem is the American leadership and what they do around the world, sending off troops to foreign lands to murder people without just cause. - rgranger, on 12/28/2008, -5/+17The US is great. Sure it has its problems but so does every other country.
The problem with the U.S. is that its by far the most powerful and influential country (yes even compared to China which it blows out of the water). Thus its problems can rub off on other people in other countries. - Zervaman, on 12/28/2008, -3/+14I'm just waiting for the satellite network which will collect solar energy and beam it back to earth...
- Residents, on 12/28/2008, -4/+15Definitely a step in the right direction, I'll take any positive news at this current juncture.
- TotalHalibut, on 12/28/2008, -2/+13Wind is a good step towards clean, energy independence. It must be combined with other methods, there is no magic bullet, more of a complex cocktail of different methods that need to be looked into and invested in.
- belfastbiker, on 12/28/2008, -3/+13WTF? Are people burying you for the facts??
- Noliaboy75, on 12/28/2008, -0/+10they are developing ways of using old mine shafts to store wind energy now. cool stuff.
- NuneTravels, on 12/27/2008, -5/+15Hubs works for a fantastic wind company. Wind Power is where it's at!
- santaliqueur, on 12/28/2008, -0/+9Seems like you're one of those who not only wants the United States to fail, but will refuse to recognize any positive strides we make. You'll probably fit in here.
- Target91, on 12/28/2008, -0/+9Maxis currently holds the patent for that technology.
- painkillr, on 12/28/2008, -1/+10what in the world do you mean by coal is not going to catch on? coal fired plants already generate half of all electricity in the US
- MAGZine, on 12/28/2008, -5/+14srsly. Ever heard of a SAIL BOAT?
Holy Jesus! What a genius invention! - Ymeg, on 12/28/2008, -5/+14Just wait, America is going to be the green country of the world. While there is a lot of corporate resistance, the small companies, the nearly fanatic supporters, and the need for local resources (I don't think coal is going to catch on) will one day have green technology a common thing.
- IHaveCrayons, on 12/28/2008, -1/+10Always the cynics...
- MyNameIsJoe, on 12/28/2008, -0/+8Actually, They'll be saving coal not oil.
- TotalHalibut, on 12/28/2008, -0/+8So do cars.
- philz, on 12/28/2008, -3/+11Uhm.. what exactly does this have to do with Europe? I mean.. seriously?
It's not like you have to prove something, do you? Moon landing, nuke subs, stealth - remember? - UnterDenLinden, on 12/28/2008, -0/+8reported
- Crucible1001, on 12/28/2008, -3/+11One step at a time...
- dayal911, on 12/28/2008, -0/+8When an article containing the same information surfaces in 2 or 3 years, everyone here will be praising Obama. I'm just letting it be known that things are already in progress and he will likely bring little hope and change to the process, despite what the media will say.
- maninblack87, on 12/28/2008, -2/+10BWHAHAHA Such an uplifting article that gives you hope. But I have to say, damn good sarcasm my friend. I salute you. Have a digg.
- BradMajors, on 12/28/2008, -5/+12No it won't. Wind power is used to generate electricity, oil is not used in the United States to generate electricity.
- akshay626, on 12/28/2008, -0/+7Kills bats due to some sort of ultrasonic sound let of by the turbines. They literally explode.
