- Johnnyhorse, on 07/14/2009, -0/+26Ahh black and white, high contrast pictures make everything look dry and desolate.
- NBCLocal, on 07/14/2009, -5/+19I do not believe in religious superstition, but the caption linking the drying of the Euphrates to the end of times sent chills down my spine.
- pitchblack16, on 07/14/2009, -0/+10That's just not cool.
- vpshockwave, on 07/14/2009, -0/+10Pour*
- skyjis6, on 07/14/2009, -0/+9Poor some water in it.
- jsnchmpn, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5What's the deal with these photo galleries where picture 13 of 13 is actually not a picture?
- gizram84, on 07/14/2009, -5/+9Why isn't the US doing more? It's 100% their fault and their responsibility!
- jjvors, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4 Yet another end time, Bible prophecy being fulfilled--and cited by the NY Times!
Revelation 16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. KJV - RaekwonTheChef, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Usually ***** like this happens when you live in a ***** desert. Las Vegas isn't doing too hot either with its water supply.
- xsecretfiles, on 07/14/2009, -2/+5So is the River gone now? those pictures were taken in the 60s right?
- edcrosay, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Ride a tire down the River Euprates. Ride a tire!
- gizram84, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3of course it was sarcastic...
- Jpeg2600, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3dead sea make you float
- appleseed1234, on 07/14/2009, -2/+5By god, why hasn't Obama asked you to be his new Water Czar already?
- jezsik, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3I remember reading that Vegas uses something like four times the amount of water as New York city.
- bob_the_alien, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3From what I was reading, mostly we can blame it on the Iraqis for being wasteful of their water supply, especially during a 2 year drought.
- skyjis6, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Ugh... Just got off an 18 hour shift. I know it's spelled *pour.* Sorry about that. I'm going to sleep now.
- ducttape36, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2one sip from the salty wine
- JayTee44, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2No.
The marsh in question was/is at the confluence of the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, near the gulf.
Saddam drained the marshes in the mid 90's to mess with the rebellious Shiites. Recently the U.S.A. and the Iraqis have been restoring the area, and it remains a work in progress. - shrontzy, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3Don't be a pussy and just say what you want.
- relay2005, on 07/14/2009, -3/+5I hope you are being sarcastic because the article does say the issue goes back a millenium and I think the US is much younger then that. If you really mean what you say then I have a few words for you that I cannot say here.
- rrife, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2Wasn't the Euprates mostly marsh until Saddam had it dammed up and turned into a "real river"? Looks like it's back to what it should be.
- Navicerts, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1umm, isn't the problem that it is a drought?
- Tkuebrich, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2That would be an unlucky picture, that's why.
- bob_the_alien, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Well, the Chinese are actually having a similar problem with the Yangtze River, and the Yellow River,
So if we can somehow fix the Euphrates river, with 200 billion, maybe we could just make a deal with the Chinese that say hey, lets just call it even on the Eurphrates, and knock 200 billion off our debt, and we'll fix both of your rivers for ya, how that sound there Buddy.
Regardless, Money might help, but in this situation, the people are going to have to be retaught how to save their water supply, so they do not waste it, same can be said with the two Chinese rivers above. All three of these area's have seen some bad droughts lately, and on top of that, the peoples have been very wasteful., Also borders need to be removed amongst our water supplies, if a neighboring country has an abundents of water, they should help out their neighbors, This is a very large issue, all together. - budboomer, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Have a nice flight.
JK......unless you weren't. - danj484, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Both the Euphrates drying up and the Dead Sea shrinking are due primarily to farmers over-siphoning water (in the case of the Dead Sea, from the Jordan River). This sort of problem is an issue all over the world.
- NiceGuyVan, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1It's been out of style for years
- Navicerts, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1pfft. i bet your whole life you have just turned the tap to get water not really having any idea on what is needed to provide that service for you. why don't you say where you are from and people can respond with how "you used the world".
- jezsik, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1Going through the photos I was thinking they were really striking for some reason. THEN I realized "It's black and white!" That technique will not go out of style anytime soon.
- JayTee44, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0ooooh are you going to cry now?
- jsnchmpn, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1So, right wing nutz can blame it on sinners left wing nutz can blame it on global warming.... it's a win win for all. :)
- BotchaMcCoola, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2Let's check how much the Chinese can lend us for that. It might be a good deal to borrow another 200 billion to fix it up.
- tumbaba, on 07/14/2009, -1/+1Kill it with fire.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0yeah, never been to the lakes where its drained from. nor any of the under ground chalk wells and lakes we have in Thanet. Thats the UK btw. Never studied the pumping systems, calculated the volume of water used, nor the time it takes to replenish a water stock after a dry year. None of this ***** affects me as I dont live in an area constantly under drought conditions to the point where police actually make patrols around gardens making sure no-one is using a hose pipe. OH WAIT I DO
OK shall we try to not make yourself look like an idiot?
Lets draw some parrallells between Euphrates and las vegas. Where do you think the water there comes from?
Shall we take a look at the Grand Canyon. I mean I am presuming you are american here. once apon a time (what, 50 years, is it the main damns have been in place?) you dont think down the line they are getting desperate for water? That there are no farmers who have been screwed?
If you genuinly fail to see why my point is so true, then I dont know what to say. Here in the 'civilised' 'developed' part of the world, we look over at situations like this, go 'pfft how silly if they just did it right they could all have water' and yet do exactly the same thing.
That, magically enough, is what I mean, by how ***** little our education actually means. It doesnt change jack *****. Often cases we make things worse.
SO come on, come at me with your sarcastic reply because that's all you can manage after this little piece of ownage you just recieved. Oh and FWIW I am a graduate of geography specialized in human geo and the effects of humans on land and its results. So unless youy happen to be a master in that specific field, STFU. - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2Sometimes I dont understand how people are so ***** at using the world. It's times like these that you realize just how educated we are compared to others - and just how little it means
- cheddaro, on 07/14/2009, -2/+1The black and white photos really bring the stark powerfulness of this grave situation to my attention in a way that I cannot ignore.
- spinladen, on 07/14/2009, -3/+2You do know that during both Gulf Wars that the US bombed out their water plant infrastructure as part of the air war, resulting in a population relying on dirty and polluted water for years and subjecting countless millions to disease and illness they would not have otherwise contracted had they had access to said water.
- ZebraApocalypse, on 07/14/2009, -2/+1Opps...
- JoeParanoid, on 07/14/2009, -3/+1Let's not forget that the Euphrates has also had to endure the US Army for the past 7 years. Don't forget we bombed the water purification systems and use it ourselves. The Dead Sea is also drying up, so it could be part of a much larger problem
Oh, and prophecy is BS. - damnshoes, on 07/14/2009, -4/+1@relay
I would say....
meh - mountain1488, on 07/14/2009, -4/+1Hate to say it but those 2012 whackos are starting to look not-so-crazy.
- RaekwonTheChef, on 07/14/2009, -8/+0This is completely Bush and Cheney's fault. Obama will come save the day though by streaming water from his ass! CHANGE
