- birdly, on 07/08/2008, -1/+21Why do I have the feeling that every mugger in Europe is heading for Paris?
- DavidtheMavin, on 11/11/2008, -1/+19Cool. They'll save their $2.33 million in energy in no time
- megadan76, on 07/07/2008, -0/+16Nice job Paris. All though I wonder why they didn't just go right to LEDs?
- replaysMike, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11I'm going to setup a hot dog stand covered in christmas lights outside of the eiffel tower and make a fortune.
- regeya, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7wait wait wait...
You mean there's wasted energy in places OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES? - castong, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6Nice euphemism calling them "metal" iodide lamps. Metal=Mercury.
- TomTruelle, on 07/08/2008, -1/+7No you're not.
- zachlac, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4Great for environmentalists and economists, bad for tourism. I was just in Paris...what makes it great at night is the incredible lighting. I guess this step is necessary, but too bad...
- faizal5k, on 07/08/2008, -1/+5uhhhh...it's not even a comic.
- bdbr, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3...says the guy who was too lazy to read the article (which was about a 5-year project to put in low-power lighting).
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2That city is beautiful with its castles and museums glowing at night. Wonderful for pedestrians. Hopefully we get alternate sources going so they can fire it up again.
- bdbr, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2The efforts they've taken to install low-power lighting might be diggworthy. This description was inaccurate.
Apparently even the posters don't read the articles now. - yuanzhoulu, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2paris is already one of the higher pickpocketing-rate cities in Europe, statistically, although Madrid, Napoli, Rome probably really get top scores. gun and violent crimes are pretty low across most of continental Europe though. in fact Paris is one of the very few cities i have not felt safe walking around in at 2am.
so in short the muggers are already there - phreak79, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2I'm all for saving energy but lets not throw the baby out with the bath water. We need to maintain some of the good bits of life.
- Vibratic, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Impossible.
I know as a fact, I heard it on the internet, that United States is the sole contributor to everything bad in the world. - sovietninja, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1damn our thread is full of fail.
- Cruelapollo, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I didn't want to cheat by googling the accents, since I'd rather not go through the character editor.
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1How the hell does that help the environment? Paris is run off nuclear energy.
- christophe971, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Read?
http://www.demonbaby.com/pics/patriotic/reading.jp ... - greggerm, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2"This action of turning off the lights started in the 1950s, way before fighting climate change became one of society's top concerns. Every night, at midnight or 1 a.m., depending on the monument and the season, the lights on monuments are automatically turned off for cost-saving purposes."
Diggworthy? - JakeAndersyn, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1The cost to switch to LED right now is still prohibitive. It's dropping, but I won't even put them in my apartment right now. The technology is still maturing, though, and I look forward to seeing more developments.
- PAStheLoD, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1They'd better make some darks spots. Especially near parks. I was unable to find a suitable peeplace . . every ***** tree was sunbathing .. at ~23 o'clock. And I wasn't even in down-downtown.
- birdly, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1We'll always have Paris......we just won't be able to see it as well.
- yuanzhoulu, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1LEDs aren't necessarily the most efficient lighting out there. high-power LEDs generate a hell of a lot of heat, too. there's research in this field, but at the moment plasma-based light sources such as fluorescents and neon lights are probably the most efficient.
what they could do instead though is switch to solar power for the lights bit, and maybe at least keep the lights on till say 11pm. - manitoba98xp, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1Première* année* des étudiants* français*
N'oublie pas les accents. - christophe971, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1je dis: "quoi ? quoi ?"
- chispito, on 07/08/2008, -0/+0Well, marginally good for astronomers trapped in the city.
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -0/+0They shouldn't have to hide their faith. The reference I made was to the rioters and gangsters in Paris.
- sideffects, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1Everybody said this originally about fluorescent light bulbs too, but they tend to not last nearly as long as incandescent light bulbs and they are more expensive. Oh yeah, and if they break mercury goes everywhere. Oops.
- Depravo, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1Let's hope they include airport runways.
- sovietninja, on 07/08/2008, -5/+5Alain: Francois, is that you? Or are you just happy to see me?
Rapist: Who le ***** is Francois? In le butt! - inactive, on 07/08/2008, -1/+0Then don't smoke your weed in public.
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -1/+0Well if you were discreet with smoking weed the government wouldn't have any reason to track you.
- Cruelapollo, on 07/08/2008, -3/+2Tu n'es pas Napoleon. Va te faire enculer.
Premiere annee des etudiants francais ftw? - inactive, on 07/08/2008, -6/+4Or they could start developing more energy efficient methods of lighting that give us the safety and beauty of lighting those monuments.
Who am I kidding. Of course the laziest people on earth just chose to flip the switch. - inactive, on 07/08/2008, -2/+0There is no expectation of privacy while walking down the street. Cameras and face recognition technologies are perfectly fine.
- artofficial, on 07/08/2008, -5/+2Dans Le Vent.
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -8/+2Je suis Napoleon!
- OasisR123, on 07/07/2008, -13/+4Dugg for not being XKCD
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -18/+4Sounds like common sense, but what happens when the crime rate goes up when the Muslim rats have more shadows to hide in?
