- Y0tsuya, on 07/21/2009, -2/+29Our drinking water is among the best in the world. Try living in Mexico for a while then come back and tell us how you like the water there. I lived in Taiwan and still visit often. You boil the water there if you want to live, no exceptions.
Here I just drink water out of the tap. I like my water spiked with chlorine and minerals. - daPhoenix, on 07/21/2009, -6/+28Funny, considering our tap water has been rated cleaner than most bottled products (and even the best are merely the same quality).
/facepalm at articles like this. - disappointment, on 07/21/2009, -0/+14Eccentric article. Ask your favorite microbiologist how they feel about the cleanliness of the average American drinking water. Then ask them about elsewhere in the world, and never again feel that "you've got it bad"
- Evilblobs, on 07/21/2009, -2/+13whine, whine, whine. Bitch, bitch, bitch. Pesticides, chemicals, blah blah blah.
Seriously, boil every cup of water i drink?
My water hasn't killed me yet, and i don't foresee it doing so anytime soon. - slymi2005, on 07/21/2009, -2/+12Drink your water and stfu
- darknecross, on 07/21/2009, -0/+10Someone requested the *****! episode on bottled water:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0fZK3m7bDc
Even if it's directed in the biased tone that makes the show funny, it raises good points.
*The EPA doesn't regulate bottled water, but has hundreds of people that regulate tap water
*The FDA doesn't regulate bottled water that's bottled and sold in the same state
*The FDA does not have the specific statutory authority to require bottlers to use certified laboratories for water quality tests or to report test results, even if violations of the standards are found. - donjo, on 07/21/2009, -0/+9I buried you but just to prove you wrong:

- sentinel106, on 07/21/2009, -2/+9In all reality though, it's probably healthier (or at least just as healthy) as your average bottle of Dasani.
- CausalityMeme, on 07/21/2009, -1/+8You know why, of course! Fluoride is a communist plot to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids! :D
- Swivelstick, on 07/21/2009, -0/+6No we urinate the meds into the water...
- RatatRatR, on 07/21/2009, -0/+6It is mentioned briefly in the Inorganic Chemicals section.
- Swivelstick, on 07/21/2009, -2/+6I has filter in brain it built in brain it filters
- passedoutghost, on 07/21/2009, -1/+5China's the same as Taiwan. But in any case I always boil my water before I drink it.
- markf3388, on 07/21/2009, -1/+5I have a filtration system built in it filters the water and has its own "tap" where i can get the fresh water. It works great.
- enigmatics, on 07/21/2009, -0/+4Facts without sources posted by a relatively anonymous person on digg can hardly be taken at face value.
- palehorse864, on 07/21/2009, -0/+4Don't feel bad about drinking bottled water. Diet Coke is 99% bottled water anyway. :)
- Myztry, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3Only for the fish. They need to ***** in the water.
- Xvash2, on 07/21/2009, -1/+4Suck it up and drink it up. Your water killing you should be the least of your worries.
- haidalangara, on 07/21/2009, -4/+7IT'S ***** WATER!!!
- wertach, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3I work for the sewer company. You can only filter out so much *****, then it goes in to municipal water supplies.Mother nature does a better job. I am glad I have a well.
- Enlightenment, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3Only idiots buy bottled water!
- Lederhosed, on 07/21/2009, -1/+4I didn't post this piece because I think that bottled water is a better option. It's not. The quality is often worse and the packing has a huge carbon footprint. But that doesn't mean we should not be aware of the challenges that face our drinking water system and try to address them.
- TwwIX, on 07/21/2009, -2/+4Water's for sissies. Real men drink urine.
- Lederhosed, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3I posted the piece because it provides a good rundown of the factors that can influence drinking water quality. It's in no way an endorsement of using bottled water over tap water. It's well known that bottled water often lags behind drinking water in quality and is way more environmentally destructive because of the packaging.
- ryanvo, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2I hate going to the doctor. Meds in the drinking water may be my salvation some day.
- Ymeg, on 07/21/2009, -2/+4but the pharmaceutical companies are dumping meds into our water! If I concentrate the drugs from 1000 gallons of water, it might be enough to hurt me!
- disappointment, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2It's magic water, it'll heal what ails ya or my name ain't Disappointment!

Poland spring is legit!
/s - mstrebe, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3Here's what it boils down to: Everything you can fix about tap water can be fixed with a brita filter. Can't do crap about anything else.
Article was way too long. - vault, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3http://www.enjoybottledwater.org
- Swivelstick, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3Okay where the hell did that come from?
- stonebear, on 07/21/2009, -2/+4Funny it doesn't mention fluoride.
- Enlightenment, on 07/21/2009, -1/+2Buying bottled water is just a scam to steal money from the idiots of the world!!!
If you don't like your tap water, filter it, drink it! It is not complicated to filter your drinking water in your house, so do it, and quit whinning!
Tap Water in USA is one of the safest in the entire world. - xonkonog, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1I'm more worried about terrorists.
- skipvt, on 07/21/2009, -0/+17. Fish ***** in it.
8. It'll rust your innards. - palehorse864, on 07/21/2009, -1/+2It doesn't taste quite as good though. A good filter system can help with that though. I have a filter on mine, but if you want cold fresh water you either have to get fresh ice cubes somehow (filtered as well and free from leftover smells in the fridge or freezer). I've been in some places where the tap water was probably more sterile than any other place, but what they sterilized it with tasted terrible.
Bottled water is pretty much tap water that has been run through some very heavy duty filters, unless it's real spring water.
I do miss having a well to get water from. - Vikstar, on 07/21/2009, -3/+4Recently a town in Australia banned bottled water. This article is just pro-bottled water propaganda in anticipation of more such movements.
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -1/+2filter your water.
- minnecrapolis, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Have to agree with palehorse on this.
I don't normally buy bottled water. I have a filter system at home that takes care of most city water problems and I have it hooked up to my icemaker because I can't stand room temp water.
However, when I am out and about and want water I will buy it bottled. The nice thing is that I will actually use the bottle for numerous uses and will refill them with home filtered water and then bring them to work and put them in my fridge.
Dasani is just purified tap water. They don't claim it is anything other than purified water. I can't recall specifics (just did a quick search on Google) but Coca-Cola was actually sued over this and won because they do purify it and it was pretty clean. - wertach, on 07/23/2009, -0/+1I'm assuming that you've had said well tested for microbial contaminants (Coliform, E-coli, etc)as well as nitrate levels.
Yes, of course! It is perfect on all levels. - corexian, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1The article didn't advocate bottled water. Reading comprehension FTW . . .
- corexian, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Filtering tap water is exactly what the article recommends. Not sure where all of the bottled water comments are coming from; the article certainly doesn't suggest that as an alternative.
- Y0tsuya, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1My relatives in Taipei also boil their water, and I have relatives all along the corridor from Taipei to Taichung. Several have installed reverse-osmosis filtration systems but that's filtered water, not tap water. If you drank water straight from the tap you're playing Russian roulette.
- jesseshort, on 08/26/2009, -0/+1these comments brought to you by BRITA water filtration systems!
- Zeos, on 07/22/2009, -0/+1I'm assuming that you've had said well tested for microbial contaminants (Coliform, E-coli, etc)as well as nitrate levels (two most common problems with groundwater sources)...The latter can (and often does) cause birth defects (google 'blue baby syndrome).
In this area, it's simply not a good idea for the great majority of people to drink the water from their wells, as there are high concentrations of these constituents (mostly due to the runoff from agricultural land uses) which have been confirmed by laboratory analysis.
If you can safely drink your well water, good for you. But for a lot of Americans, its simply not an option.
To address those who want to know if their supplies are safe, any violation of MCLs (maximum contaminant level) by a public water systems trigger a violation from their state primacy agency (health dept, dept. of the environment, etc). Every violation triggers a mandatory public notification, the time in which you would receive this depends on the severity of the violation and can range from 24 hours (for incidents where an immediate hazard to health exists) to 1 year (non-critical violations such as paperwork errors or reporting errors). If you want to see if your (or any for that matter) water system has been issued any violations you can visit the EPA's SDWIS page at http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/sdwis/sdwis_ov.html .
If any contaminants are detected in your public water supply, you WILL know it, as the EPA REQUIRES all PWS's to deliver yearly water quality reports to all customers (you should receive them either by mail, or by hand delivery by July of each year (if you don't, call your water department as ask them wtf yours is) advising them of anything which has been detected in the drinking water, the list of contaminants we monitor for is HUGE and growing every year.
If it's not obvious, I work for a Muni. Potable water supply, and I KNOW how intense our monitoring is (as well as how lackadaisical the testing for bottled water is) for these and other contaminants.
The most common complaint of users of public supplies are (understandably) the chlorine odor. I don't like this either, but I like bacterial contamination less. The simplest thing you can do to remove this is to fill a container with water, leave it uncapped and stick in the refrigerator for awhile, the chlorine will naturally dissipate on it's own (hell of a lot cheaper than a 'filtration system' for chlorine).
BTW, for those of you with filters on your tap, the manufacturers aren't just trying to rip you off for those filter replacements either. They NEED to be replaced. The become a breeding ground for bacteria if left unattended, so much so that we (and most other water systems I'm familiar with) will not use homes with these for our routine bacteriological monitoring as false positive results are frequent because folks don't perform the required maintenance on the devices. - Rev0lver, on 07/22/2009, -0/+1@Swivelstick
Rhetorical question. Was simply trying to reference wannaBdug to it is all. - Y0tsuya, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1If you did not drink from a reverse-osmosis filter, good luck buddy.
- minnecrapolis, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Really? It's not that bad in Mexico. I have to wonder if this is how it use to be but no longer is.
If you are on any extended stay in Mexico I would recommend drinking the water as soon as you get there.
I was sick for about 12 hours from water in Mexico back in 88' when I made my first trip there. I've never been sick from the water there any of the numerous times I have been back.
I can't recall seeing anyone boil water for drinking in Taiwan either. -
