- tbk123, on 05/12/2008, -1/+6That ustream is my newest discovery - very cutting edge (by my standards) :)
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5Get out and say "hello" to as many people as you can. Show them that they are important to you, that you care about them. The social media won't do this for you!
- balibones, on 05/12/2008, -1/+7You learn something new every day. I like ustream. Hugg.com sucks though. It's a shame because Tree Hugger really could have had something great if it was implemented correctly.
- Accolade1, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3NObama
- davidryal, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4if you think about it, sustainability and social media are both about distributed value over centralized value. hm.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Ohh ffs. Facebook did not introduce "widgets" to the internets. They've been on the web since 1994.
Twitter is for self-important jerk offs. - maxgladwell, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2That's why I included Digg in the story. Hugg is well intentioned. It just lacks the vision and execution.
- sustainablogger, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Hugg really feels like TH's "ugly step-child"... it is a shame, because it's got great potential.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2I have to agree with you tibbon. "Change the World?" An icon on a desktop isn't gonna change anything. People change themselves. It's like living with or knowing an alcoholic or addict and trying to get them to change. It's futility at it's finest; you'll wear yourself out trying to get them to quit. For the addict, when things get bad enough, they change themselves. That's when miracles happen, chains are broken and freedom is discovered. Know thyself.
- borez, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3Dugg for hugg... coz we'd all like to hugg an article
/sarcasm - tibbon, on 05/12/2008, -3/+6I love social media, but "change the world" is such an overhyped headline. I doubt any of this is going to change the world. I'm always on twitter, but it sure as hell isn't changing the world as less than 1% of the world uses it. Maybe someday.
With all of the ads on this blog, I'm guessing that they are looking for "green" for sure... as in money. - Accolade1, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2I can see that defending an argument is your redeeming quality.
- BTM08, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3http://www.BreakTheMatrix.com - This company is planning to go from the internet out into the Main Stream Media, to replace it. They are already making huge strides and have acquired contracts with local cable providers who have given them their own 24/7 stations. They will not shy away from showing the truth about the war, the candidates, and much more..
- Spudster, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2While on the topic of social media, here in Canada free speech advocates are trying to fight section 13(1) of the Canadian Human Right Act which makes it an offense to essentially offend someone else. People are being investigated up here for simply posting a picture of Muhammad on their website! We've set up a Facebook group and are trying to gain a coalition of both left and right wingers who support freedom of speech. Link to Facebook group:

With the power of social media, we hope that this issue gains the support that is needed. We've seen other Facebook groups in Canada become major political forces (Fair Copyright for example.) Let's make this one a major force aswell! - e1ioan, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2I don't have a Facebook or MySpace account and I will never open one. I think is waste of time. I prefer to get together with my friends for a monopoly or poker and I don't care about xyz_who_Ill_never_meet and who spends his/her time on a crappy website all day long.
- feliniti, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Fantastic article. Thanks for sharing it.
- ninjaface, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1How about using flash mobs for political and social causes rather than tearing up gardens for a squirt gun fight.
- DesignFan, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Hugg is a really good site. They have really grown since I started visiting,
- areisdesigns, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1This is a great article, I am interested in finding out more about Ning, going to check it out now, thanks for the post!
- BTM08, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1War was just an example. You seeing that as the only topic covered is very small minded of you. The site itself is a community site. But the sites goals are profoundly revolutionary- taking internet content mainstream, telling the truth. The horrors of war exists whether you want to see them or not. Vietnam in the living room of America was the only thing that ended the war. You'd rather be ignorant and comfortable I guess. Open your mind look and read. They are already making inroads into cable, and yes they will cover energy issues and more.
- hendrixlives64, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1hugg: gayyy
- janebb, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0http://www.drawingday.org is trying to change the art world via social sites - kinda ;)
- sustainablogger, on 05/12/2008, -3/+3Great list of tools here. Some well known in the "greenosphere," others definitely worth exploring
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1So its a propaganda site that just happens to be your propaganda so its OK with you.
*****. - willstewart, on 04/29/2009, -0/+0what a great article! most of companies working on natural search engine optimization, one of the latest marketing strategies are already involved in all this. and it'll always depend on how smart specialist are!
http://www.ilikesem.com/natural-search-engine-opti ... - mcohn, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1Great to see this article hit the front page. Social media for sure has the ability to harness all this distributed power and value and harness it for change. It will be interesting to watch this space evolve over the next few months/years. It would be nice to have hugg be a little more robust, but I think sites like justmeans.com have potential.
- arobicha, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0Not everybody wants to see nothing but the horrors of war on TV. Some of us actually want to do good in the world, like develop a new energy source, or cure cancer, or AIDS, or educate the masses on realistic and competitive standards. If you want to DO something, help solve those problems. Wars are fought over food, religion and resources. You want peace? Fix those problems, and peace will come on it's own.
Also, there's nothing revolutionary about that site. - inactive, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Clean your room, your house and then your neighborhood, then you can save the world.
- cmkMBArd, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0I've been trying to learn more about social media (not specific to green sites) and this was really helpful!
- HomeSpunHealers, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0I found the article very informative. Thanks for sharing!
- maxgladwell, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1I also like the distributed vs centralized analogy for energy, particularly renewables like wind and solar. Just as the web decentralized information production, I'm hoping its energy counterpart does the same for clean electricity. I think Gore has a term for it. He's definitely out front on this one, too. He's a smart dude with a lot of vision.
- thing0100, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0www.justmeans.com, the next big thing...maybe.
- olear38492, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0If you like USTREAM check out http://www.justin.tv
- bhod, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1fail. gobama!
- bhod, on 05/12/2008, -4/+2vote obama and tell as many people as you can to vote for him. he's our last chance to turn this country around.
