- UrbanGreen, on 10/21/2008, -2/+14They have definitely made an impact on global coffee production, even though they only account for 1% of the coffee market.
- AFelsinger, on 10/22/2008, -4/+10starbucks claims they have fair trade coffee on request.
so ask them next time you go in
i've yet to hear of anyone actually receiving fair trade coffee - sarafina42, on 10/21/2008, -5/+11I've noticed that companies that make a big step in the right direction are held to higher standards. Their customer base is really different than Dunkin' Donuts for example, as are their prices.
- greenfyre, on 10/22/2008, -1/+6and it should all be fair trade!
- inactive, on 10/22/2008, -2/+7Wake up and smell the greenwash.
- cheeseylaalaa, on 10/22/2008, -0/+5They roast all their coffee to the same level, its just different strengths of bean... no "light roast"... just ciggarette ash.
- nickert0n, on 10/22/2008, -5/+10Who gives a *****, the earth will be fine, we will not.
- turpenine, on 10/22/2008, -3/+7 a note, java is an aged bean and as far as i know starbucks doesn't sell any aged beans
- tizzleG, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3You know what could really help you
sort through these important issues?
ORANGE MOCHA FRAPPUCCINO! - cheeseylaalaa, on 10/22/2008, -1/+4In the UK, and from what i can gather, elsewhere, starbucks has been brewing their fair trade Estima for months on end now... Every store i work in has it constantly on, so yes. you can get a "fair trade" cup of coffee every time you go in.
What is fair trade anyway, its just a label applied by another company with good marketing. Digging round would show you, on average, starbucks pays much more than the going rate for their coffee. Often more than fair trade guidelines suggest....
And it can't all be fair trade either, fair trade certified growers, can't produce enough coffee to feed the huge giant that is starbucks. Fair trade doesn't want to apply their label to the bigger coffee producers and so it makes it dam near impossible for large buyers to get all the coffee from certified fair trade farms. Next time you go into a starbucks pick up some literature on their newly launched shared planet initiative.
I'm not saying they don't have bad practices but fair trade is a grey area as far as i'm concerned. - lukemann, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2The starbucks by my work doesn't even have a recycle container for the glass/aluminum drinks that they sell. Pretty surprising considering their demographic.
- marshallpeck, on 10/22/2008, -3/+5I'm getting a little sick of how green is that and how green is this
- lulzitsadigg, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2Color.green
- shutaro, on 10/22/2008, -3/+5I agree, it looks pretty brown to me. Not green at all.
- retrospects, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2i have not been there in a while and they did not put a sleeve on my coffee so i asked for one and they were like " yeah we are not giving them out unless they are asked for, to save the environment...."

- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Does Digg offer a mechanism of reporting spammers, aside from the bury/report as offensive thing?
- miiiindriiiis, on 10/22/2008, -5/+6They've failed everywhere.
- sdocpublishing, on 10/22/2008, -0/+1Over 60% of all Starbucks coffee beans are Fair Trade certified, but blended with beans that are not, so those blends cannot be called Fair Trade coffees. Instead of complaining online about a topic you are ignorant about go here http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/csr.asp and read it for yourself.
Yes, you can walk in and request any of the coffees Starbucks produces, including fair trade certified (Cafe Estima), and have a french press prepared (at an extra cost due to the extra work) or have it brewed in the drip coffee brewer.
If you have yet to hear of anyone receiving Fair Trade certified coffee on request it is because you are already critical of Starbucks and you are hearing what you want to hear.
Can you walk in and ask for this and have employees look at you with a "what are you talking about" look on their face. Of course, with any retail/restaurant chain Starbucks has a high turnover rate and not every new employee, and sometimes older ones are aware of every single policy in the store. Especially when an uninformed, pseudo-environmentalist who read about Fair Trade for the first time on the Internet just the day before walks into a Starbucks for no reason other then to be jerk to the guy behind the counter by demanding they brew Fair Trade certified coffee and then overreact when the employee doesn't know exactly what to do. - omnithought, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1...and it was a good thing. Coffee used to be good and cheap and it was just ***** coffee.
- forcedfx, on 10/22/2008, -1/+2Snapple Fact #203: Starbucks has a minimum wage monkey sort through the garbage at the end of each day.
- zombiecarlin, on 10/22/2008, -2/+3Starbucks is great for a crap. Whenever I'm dying for a ***** and away from home be it in a small town, big city or the middle of the desert I always know there's a Starbucks restroom not more than five minutes away. Sometimes I even have 4 or 5 to choose from on the same block. Now that's service for my bottom, not to mention great for the enviornment since I'm not ***** down some back alley for lack of a better spot.
- ohcanada1, on 10/22/2008, -0/+1If you read up on Starbucks, they're actually pretty 'green' as far as corporations go. They are the most targeted because they are the biggest, but they're also industry leaders in the fair trade and greening movement.
Far from perfect, but they do try and you got to give them credit for that. And for people stating that they force mom and pop out of business, THEY CREATED THE MARKET. Before Starbucks you'd be hard pressed to find dozen and dozen of coffee shops charging $3 or $4 for a cup of coffee. - akcpe, on 10/22/2008, -0/+1Bumping you up.. Starbucks coffee is mediocre and overpriced at best. While I like to try many varieties, a safe franchise staple is Dunkin Donuts.... still pricey but tastes much better than the burnt motor oil Starbucks serves.
- greenfyre, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1That's your response? and you are impressed with yourself ... why?
- wickensworth, on 10/22/2008, -0/+1How java is their green? Seriously? That was the least funny thing you could have possibly said
- BruisedGhost, on 10/22/2008, -8/+8Green or not it doesn't change the fact that that their coffee tastes like *****, Intelligentsia ftw!!!
- sickb13, on 10/22/2008, -4/+4The word "Green" is really starting to piss me off
- DeathToaster, on 10/22/2008, -0/+0This is a true statement.
- seand, on 10/22/2008, -1/+1Timmy Ho's double double! When in Canadia....
- infiniphunk, on 10/22/2008, -7/+7They are so green that anytime you go into Starbucks they give you your beverage in a paper cup. Make no mistake, Starbucks is just another huge company that only really worries about their bottom line. It's disgusting that they want to use the "we're eco-friendly" ***** to boost their sales; they know a lot of fools out there fall for their environmentally friendly coffee. AND their coffee always tastes burnt, even their light-roast.
- cubicledrone, on 10/22/2008, -2/+2Well, first they wanted to charge $10 a day for web access, then they closed what, 12,000 stores? Then everyone got fired and couldn't afford tap water. After that we pretty much lost interest.
- miiiindriiiis, on 10/22/2008, -2/+2Shut up commie.

- samotage, on 10/21/2008, -8/+8Interestingly Starbucks has effectively failed here in Melbourne Australia, they have shut over 150 stores.

- mogdor, on 10/22/2008, -5/+3Starbucks Food: How Green Does It Make Your Poop?
- inactive, on 10/22/2008, -9/+5Their customer base is a ton of pompous douchebags that probably wouldn't be able to tell if they were suddenly drinking pee. At least pee is "green".
