- ChiaGod, on 07/17/2009, -0/+18For those that won't read the article and don't understand the following sentence:
"The new data provides what NAS committee member Thorsten Markus called 'a dramatic improvement in what we can see'".
The quality of the *data* (pictures) improved (from 15 meter resolution to 1 meter resolution).
The article and headline *are not* talking about the ice melting situation improving.
This would be like comparing pictures taken of your Grandma in 1920 with pictures taken last week and saying that "there's a dramatic improvement in what you can see in the new pictures". Your grandma didn't get any more good looking, but the pictures quality is much better now a days!
That is all. - Shwaavay, on 07/17/2009, -3/+11These comments suck!
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+9Looks like the terrorists won this round . . .
- capnrefsmmat, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6I think they mean "dramatic improvement" in the quality of the pictures.
- matrixOp3r4t0r, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6well this is surely not the end my friend, many other secrets will be revealed through the course of next few months / years
- phylaxer, on 07/17/2009, -4/+9A dramatic improvement? I guess global warming was fake all along! /s
- RealmDown, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5That they were spying on ice ?
- zyklon, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5You're feeding the troll. Don't do that.
- ShadowFusion, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4you're an idiot.. yes climate is caused by the sun, but these gases trap more heat from the sun than before..
Summer melts are accelerating, and winter re-freezing can no longer make up the difference. Every summer now seems to be accompanied by news of unprecedented ice loss and more waters open for the first time in known history. - norman619, on 07/17/2009, -2/+6Wow another idiotic comment made by someone with Bush derangement syndrome. They did not release the photos because they were taken with spy satellites. Releasing them back them woudl have given our enemies an idea of the capability of our spy sats. The only reason these were released now is we have better ones in orbit now with better resolution capability. It had nothing to do with the ice.
- norman619, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Exactly. Military and spy secrets are revealed as they become obsolete.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5To be perfectly honest. I did not read the article because i'm a ***** TROLL! I'm actually a pretty smart troll and can comprehend this subject matter. Thank you for feeding me.
- DrDabbles, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5I'll respond by saying you're retarded. When the VAST majority of scientific data shows one conclusion, and you decide to rail against it and believe what the minority group says...you're stupid. When you then blurt out that opinion as incontrovertible FACT on the internet...you're retarded.
Sometimes in life, we have to admit that we as individuals may not actually know everything, and therefore we have to yield to the professionals. In this case, there are scientists with nothing vested one way or the other, and there are paid advertisements.
Don't bother responding, as it's clear you aren't willing to have a rational discussion regarding the _facts_, and would rather speak with no supporting data. - careya, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3The misinformation spewed by denialists is beyond belief. So many people who clearly never took a physics class are now experts on climate, and accuse thousands of scientists of a global conspiracy.
How many of these denialists are sock-puppets? - Mnementh2230, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4"And what did the improved photos show? Did it show evidence of global warming causing sea ice to melt more than expected?
...or did it show that the sea ice was NOT receding?"
The article doesn't say.
"Well, you have to read other articles to find out, yes? Did you?"
Nothing relating to this one - you have a relevant link? Share it.
"I did. That is why I think that the theory of global warming is rubbish. These improved photos back up my assessment."
So you're a qualified environmentalist, then? Because if you're not, your opinion doesn't mean jack. - Disgod, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4"These improved photos back up my assessment."
Really? Do tell how so.... Have you studied these photos yourself? Do the photos have the ability to show ice thickness? Does this article ever once mention the thickness of the ice or the quantities of the ice? What about these photos backs up your "assessment"? Be specific. - Mnementh2230, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4Did you even read the article? There's nothing in the article that says global warming isn't there. You're making ***** up.
"The new data provides what NAS committee member Thorsten Markus called “a dramatic improvement” in what we can see."
I suppose this line is what you're referring to... however, if you read the next sentence...
"The previously off-limits sea ice data has a resolution of one meter. The previous scientific standard sea ice images from the Landsat program have a resolution of 15 meters."
... it is CLEAR he is talking about a dramatic improvement in the quality of the data they're getting - NOT in any environmental factor.
Are you really that stupid, or are you just so interested in pushing your political agenda that you're more than willing to lie and ignore facts? - norman619, on 07/17/2009, -3/+5vilago:
Offended by the scientific truth? Please run along outside and play with the other kids and leave this to the adults.
Just in case you wish to actually educate yourself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADAk4tR9Dko - Disgod, on 07/17/2009, -1/+3...did you RTFA? Because at no point did they mention anything about the thickness of the ice or global warming specifically. The "dramatic improvement" is in the RESOLUTION of the images, and nothing else.
- capnrefsmmat, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Polar orbits are popular with spy satellites because you can see pretty much any spot on the Earth as it rotates beneath you. I'm not sure just how high the inclinations get though.
- DeskFlyer, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2We have to spy on the ocean? Is it not visible enough or something?
- gdha, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1It's about time...and that's is very sad.
- ianeb2005, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1YES AND ALL OF YOU EXPERTS IN THE GOP OBVIOSLY ARE SCIENTISTS OR HAVE ANY SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND /s Obviously the consensus reached by the scientific community world wide is a conspiracy to make you believe that global warming of any kind or cause is not fake , obviously ! GEt a grip and read the real scientific journals over the last 40 years - it's all a conspiracy - Riigggght ppff you guys are idiots, careya thank you for a logical comment in comparison to the majority here :)
- pyrite013, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Saying there is conflicting info doesn't magically conjure it into existence. Every reputable scientific group in the world has come to the same conclusion. And did you get your degree in astrophysics out of a cereal box? No sunspot cycle can account for the sudden and extreme changes in our environment the corresponds to the rise of the industrial age.
- S1ngular1ty1, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1It was probably things under the ice they were interested in.
- 3The3Dude3, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Or you can just, you know, pay attention to your surroundings, Disgod. Than maybe research the avg. temp changes globally.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -2/+3At least you're not hiding your douche-baggery from us. Yea for you!
- BlackOculus, on 07/17/2009, -3/+4They aren't spy satellites....Why on earth would we have spy satellites hovering around the north pole. NASA has various satellites designed specifically for monitoring various changes in earths atmosphere. Here's a couple.
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/aqua/index.html
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/terra/index.html
Wierd....I just googled for 5 seconds and came up with this: http://blogs.nasa.gov/cm/blog/CASIE
Guess it was so top secret they even made a blog about it.
- librtyship, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Sure a lot of conflicting info out there. Could it be that some of the global warming proponents are responsible for supposedly conflicting data regarding ice packs. One thing is evident, we are in the 9th year of a distinct cooling cycle, solar output is down somewhat due to a lack of sunspots which is due to the 11 to 22 year cycle of sunspot activity. Sunspots have been unusually scarce for quite a while now and this equates to lower solar output which indeed means cooling. These cycles are a normal occurrence, so much for Al Gore and his junk science which is designed to bring money and power to dishonest politicians.
- buckbongo, on 07/26/2009, -0/+1Climate change is one of the most complex subjects in science. This means its also one of the most politically controversial and subject to prejudiced debate. It's rare to see any climate change debate free of hysteria and mudslinging. I realise it's difficult for many of those addicted to conspicuous consumption to examine their lifestyle. But there is an opportunity here to become more aware of the cost of "advanced " lifestyles on the environment and the poorer nations on Earth.
- nyxerebos, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1satellite is in polar orbit, has camera, US has bases and nuclear installations in Antarctica, so yeah, I imagine they would.
- DrDabbles, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1There was this funny idea that maybe the Soviet Union, or now Russia might do naughty things under or on the ice, in preparation for an attack on the US. So, as it turns out, having polar orbits is a GOOD thing for watching that type of activity.
Also, if you use any of the satellite tracking tools online you will quickly notice that there are spy satellites covering every angle of the globe...and then some. There's a school of thought that it's better to have too much coverage than not enough in the military. - adamwho, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2There is an additional wrinkle in this... most "spy satellites" aren't in a position to take images of high latitudes... there is no point in putting something in that orbit... it costs too much and there is nothing to see.
Also 1m resolution is easily attainable with non-spy satellites. Balloons and airplanes can provide MUCH higher resolution that 1m... so what is the point? - Disgod, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Yeah... that CORRELATION FAILED years ago, way to keep up on the most recent science. Correlation /= Causation.
- DrDabbles, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Just so you know how this sort of thing works (because clearly you think it's something nefarious), when SPY satellites take photos or measurements, the data is AUTOMATICALLY classified as Top Secret. It's a SPY satellite. When the military was contracted to collect this data, the agency ordering the photos knew it would be classified. I'm sure they had to sign contracts and waivers that promised secrecy.
Now, so you know WHY this happens: Governments like to keep their secret satellites' capabilities (gasp) SECRET. This, of course, is a gold mine to anti-government and conspiracy theory idiots such as yourself. Is it necessary? No. By deduction you can figure out what capabilities are out there, and you can do it with quite a bit of accuracy.
With regards to keeping our "enemies" in the dark, releasing .5m or even 10cm resolution photos does nothing to help or hinder anybody trying to hide from satellite imagery. Through image processing and radio-imagery, there is very little that can be hidden on the surface of the earth.
On a personal note, using the phrase "our enemies" annoys me. Stop it. Most people can't even identify our "enemies" anymore. - vilago, on 07/17/2009, -2/+1no in fact since you can now see her wrinkles and brown aging spots in full 1080p she is uglier.
- norman619, on 07/17/2009, -7/+6The argument isn't the existance or non-existance of global warming. The argument is what is causing it. Nice try at misrepresenting the issue. Oh, and let's not forget the fact that the globe is in a cooling trend now. The oceans will not follow suit for a few hundred years. The ocean temps lag a few hundred years behind atmospheric temps.
- Disgod, on 07/17/2009, -3/+2"Oh, and let's not forget the fact that the globe is in a cooling trend now."
[Peer reviewed Citations Needed] - oviiiedo, on 07/17/2009, -1/+0Global warming is a scam by no other than Al gore. All b.s please explain to me all the ice ages and the earth warming.. no scientist have ever said that global warming was actually happening.. last time i heard the earth was in a cooling phase. this is a govt scam to try and get some more $$$ how does al gore travel .. a jet.... yeah good way to save the earth
- bradtacs, on 07/17/2009, -2/+1So let me get this straight, you actually believe no one but you understands that ice sheets melt and change with the seasons? Scientists and other people with a long history of studying these problems never took this into account?
If this is the case maybe you should contact one of the government panels and explain this missing piece of the puzzle to them. I am sure they will be gob-smaked at their own ignorance. - psunut5, on 07/17/2009, -5/+3But the sun is at an all time low in activity too. So your explanation based on nothing, is pretty much worth...
Nothing. - acknotSW, on 07/17/2009, -4/+2Typical partisan idiot. You sir are part of the problem that allows things like bush to crawl into our government.
- sirkel28, on 07/17/2009, -5/+2Do these morons know the ice sheet grow and shrink with the changing of the seasons? Climate change being caused by carbon is a hoax, a lie, a sham. Carbon monoxide actually is quite low compared to what is has been in the past. The Sun is the driving force behind the climate.
- DavidNiven, on 07/17/2009, -5/+1Yes, I RTFA.
And what did the improved photos show? Did it show evidence of global warming causing sea ice to melt more than expected?
...or did it show that the sea ice was NOT receding?
Well, you have to read other articles to find out, yes? Did you?
I did. That is why I think that the theory of global warming is rubbish. These improved photos back up my assessment.
How do you respond? - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -5/+1Well, I'll give you credit for reading the article.
but then I take it away for not understanding it. - DavidNiven, on 07/17/2009, -6/+1No wonder they didn't openly publicize these photos for so long. They showed reality to be directly opposite to what the global warming wackos in government had been pushing. Reality simply sucks for the Goracle and his allies in government.
