- badNetAdmin, on 06/11/2008, -2/+28I've personally saved about $600 over the past year by switching to CFL's, lowering the heat in Winter and using the A/C sparingly in the Summer. I've also saved hundreds by switching to Geico (not really...checked their prices once...they're a HUGE ripoff)
- kenvsryu, on 06/12/2008, -1/+25Any girls want to save water and shower with me?
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -0/+19I hate faucet aerators. It looks like there's so much water coming out! But NO! It's half AIR. DAMNIT!
They make drinking out of the faucet much less enjoyable.
BUT... they probably DO help save the environment... - cjacks9, on 06/11/2008, -3/+20For folks who don't know, gives a quick chart for what you can do and what it might save you. Short and simple. Dugg.
- alapoet, on 06/11/2008, -4/+19Emphasizing the real-world savings to be achieved by investing a little to go green is a good approach, in this grim economy.
- diggB, on 06/11/2008, -0/+12Sadly, asking people to change in order to save the environment is not nearly as effective as telling them to change in order to save money. Case in point, my dad (now in his late 70's) could give a rat's ass about global warming or the environment; however, he'll reuse plastic wrap, keep the same old furniture for 40 years, wear the same shirt until it's practically transparent with age, keep the house near freezing during the winter and never touches the AC during the summer just to save a buck. Go figure.
I love my dad. - merreborn, on 06/11/2008, -0/+11Efficiency usually makes both economic and environmental sense.
Embrace it. - DeathJux, on 06/11/2008, -0/+9No. Magic isn't real.
- bman85, on 06/12/2008, -0/+7FYI
VOC stands for volatile organic compounds.
You know that new car smell? thats VOC's baby, and they mess you up over time. - 0xbaadf00d, on 06/12/2008, -2/+9park your car outside when it rains.
- cardinalgill, on 06/12/2008, -0/+6Seriously - a LEED cert. architect I know won't buy a house newer than 10 years old because it exhales so many chemicals
- cardinalgill, on 06/11/2008, -0/+6this is the kind of information that's so important to disseminate...it's hard to think long term when buying light bulbs or inflating your tires, ha.
- nobodaddy, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7Lots of reasonable suggestions. The breakout of the savings is inspiring too, the car maintenance resonated with me. More reasons not to put off oil changes and tune ups.
- Haoie, on 06/12/2008, -0/+5Well, he did grow up in a different era.
For example, people old enough to have lived through the Great Depression/World War 2 are familar with far more hardships, than say someone born during the 70s. - TheVirus, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5Use a microfiber cloth.
- Shiftgood, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5I really hope most people understand by helping the environment... you know.... where we live... does not mean that they support the theory of Global warming.
I feel like the two are getting mixed up and this global warming thing is keeping some people from acting responsibly.GW or not. - OrangeTide, on 06/12/2008, -1/+5seriously they think you can save a doctor's visit by not using a solvent free (non-VOC) paint? Where is the research to support this claim?
(Plus my copay is $10 not $25, who pays over $20 anymore?) - briankoenig03, on 06/12/2008, -0/+490% valuable advice, although I think the medical savings for the last two items are a bit of a stretch.
- merreborn, on 06/11/2008, -0/+4The people who save hundreds by switching to Geico do so by switching from an even more expensive ensurer, like Farmers.
There are tons of low end brokers that can find you a deal far cheaper than either, though. e.g. http://www.eastwoodinsurance.com/
Although I've never really had to deal with their people, since I haven't gotten in any accidents. - ryanwarnersteel, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3Easy to know when you drive a stick ^.^
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -1/+4Wow, great breakdown of how to save money through sustainable choices. It lays it out in straight forward, easy to reference table.
- linuxrebel, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3This info would be important IF it were kept up to date. For example if you have a modern (ie made in the last 20 years) car it has some form of computer metering of air fuel flow and can adjust the air/fuel mixture on the fly to compensate for a less than clean air filter.
- cardinalgill, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2I've only used ecotouch, but the folks on this same site seem to really like it...no reports of scratches thus far:
http://greenhome.huddler.com/products/category/car ... - merreborn, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Ethanol reduces fuel economy. It contains less energy per mass than gasoline
- unpolloloco, on 06/12/2008, -1/+3Aren't these suggestions pretty obvious? Use less water, use less gas, use less energy, don't poison yourself.
The thing about speed is completely dependent on the car you drive. Going faster only hurts gas mileage if your car is in its top gear. It's most efficient point is right after it shifts into it's top gear.
Case in point: 70-75mph in my car = 31-32 mpg with a/c on. It's rated at 28mpg. - notoneofus, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2And going back in time to 1955?
- antonio97b, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2I can imagine a semi truck driver barreling down the road at 88 mph...
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 06/12/2008, -1/+3Apparently clicking the link on a digg article is too hard for people these days. Thanks for the summary.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2no
- bman85, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah, eventually the materials "off gas" and become harmless, but it takes years. Almost everything we buy puts off harmful fumes.
- Natitude, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Good tips. Speeding is definitely the one I have the most trouble with.
- Edwaldo, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1It's hard to not speed down the freeway, one of the few times other people look at me.
- Katana, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Sort of true, but not as much as using one bucket and a sponge does.
Waterless wash (quick detail) is normally only used after a proper wash with car shampoo/wash mitts/two bucket method. If you car has more than a weeks worth of dirt you need to properly wash it, a quick detail is only done between normal washes to keep the car looking good. If done on a car too dirty it will just drag the dirt over the paint and scratch it, like sponges do.
If you want some decent quick detail sprays try Meguiars Quick Detailer/Last Touch or Zaino Z8. Most good companies like chemical guys, poorboys, jeffs also do quick detail sprays, but a quick detail is no substitute for a proper wash, which doesn't have to take 100 gallons of water like the article says.
If you're interested in looking further into it, forums like www.detailingworld.co.uk are friendly and offer advice. - carlosos, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Time is money. Maybe you are saving money when speeding? (depending on the car you drive and money you make an hour)
- willyummy69, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1So you've spammed 5 different other articles comments with a story you submitted, and your story still only has 2 diggs and 1 of them is yours. Good job spammer. That's what shouts are for.
- Drull, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1Unshowered fat girls are very bad.
- antonio97b, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1GREAT SCOTT
- davidhallstrom, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1I've heard or read most of these tips before but I almost never think about them. It's nice to see them all in onle place. Now I have a source to remind me.
- donkz, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1I LOVE CFL's brightness. It takes them a couple of minutes to warm up, but illumination level is superior to normal light bulbs.
- BlueSkyfish, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1If you're talking about ethanol, they already add that to gas.
- ExRe, on 06/12/2008, -2/+3*fat girls not allowed.
- buddhajer, on 06/12/2008, -1/+1Thanks. Good to be reminded. How about the island of floating plastic garbage in Pacific Ocean? Check out this video and Digg if you like http://digg.com/educational/Garbage_Island_in_the_ ...
This video documents where all the plastic goes - into an island the size of Texas, ingeniously dubbed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Basically, any trash that gets dumped in the water rides the currents to this one spot. Then it gets eaten by fish, who are eaten by bigger fish, who are eaten by us. Check it out. - facelesscoward, on 06/11/2008, -2/+1I've read that waterless car washes scratch your car. True or false?
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -2/+1What an awesome way to teach it too by using a great "green guide", don't you think?
- wanny19, on 06/12/2008, -3/+1How much will a new paint job on your car cost when your wiping dirt off it's paint?
- Vigilo, on 06/11/2008, -8/+6We'll need to save money so we can pay the carbon taxes and the fines from putting too much recycling out and not closing the bin lid all the way.
- lostsymphonies1, on 06/12/2008, -3/+1I actually save about $30 a month using Geico (compared to AllState & progressive)
- inactive, on 06/12/2008, -3/+0Part of me thinks, "Why should I give a ***** when corporations don't?" It's wrong to think that, isn't it?
- lola83, on 06/11/2008, -4/+1in the world of high gas/food/everything prices, i am ALL about saving $$ these days...yeaaaaa
