- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -1/+32What?? This is a terrible idea... Scotland hasn't seen the sun since the 50's...
- ecomod, on 05/12/2008, -0/+15BCCStu - I believe all electrical components are carefully protected from the water, but check the iDA website for more details about the proposal.
- borez, on 05/12/2008, -0/+12Well you see, they have these wire things and...Oh never mind
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+12Not only are they brilliant and efficient, but they're ridiculously beautiful.
However, is the 'lily pad' idea purely aesthetic? What's the different between an energy pad on a rooftop and an energy pad in the water? - greentime, on 05/12/2008, -1/+12Beautiful idea!
- Ramble, on 05/12/2008, -0/+9Irrelevant when you know some Glasweigan scally will come and break it again.
- MikeChino, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7What a smart solution - as aesthetically pleasing as it is effective in increasing our solar surface area.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+8Brilliant idea, these things rotate around the sun too.
- lex0nyc, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7Well, that's mostly thanks to being on the Earth...
- FaithclubDotNet, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7Here I thought solar power was limited by the cost of the panels to make. There is enough unused area in the world. Why would you pick a river? This is less like solar news, and more like art.
- robbymcdobby, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6These will also be great new homes for many of Scotland's solar-powered frogs.
- NorthAtlantic, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6Say that to my sunburn
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6This idea sucks ass because of boats.
- drdavid, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4It is aesthetically appealing in a technology-meets-nature sort of way. However most of those buildings look like they would be more improved by having solar panels on their roofs than would the river Clyde. Maybe if it were easy for those businesses to sell their power back into the grid, they would have an economic incentive to do that, and public areas such as the river won't need to get cluttered up with what isn't necessary.
- Hemingrubbish, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5Its a shame. I can't imagine them lasting long before some neds try to sink them.
ned = scottish chav - Krumm, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5They have to swim out to steal the floating ones, and the water's bloody cold up there...
- Richandler, on 05/12/2008, -2/+7Won't work. The river is clearly a transportation route and put giant ugly structures in water will only inhibit water traffic. It's kinda like throwing random cones in the middle of a freeway. Accidents are going to happen and delays will be endless. Stop taxing the people and let them buy the damn solar panels for their own roof.
- Fighter4rent, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5you've go-ta be having a laugh Ned's will have those lilies smashed within hours of them being installed not to mention the rats will chew through the cables. nice idea but in Scotland this really wont work. much better to put them on top of buildings out of harms way
- corbettkroehler, on 05/12/2008, -2/+7Orlando, Florida could use that very effectively! Thanks for sharing this important breakthrough with us!
- rotten777, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4It would be a lovely place for birds to hang out and poo.
Note: I'm two counties south of Orange ;) - MJDub, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3The world just lost half of its usable solar area with the length of that post.
- jbenson2, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3I'll give PETA one week before they have ads condemning this. It is not right for man to obstruct the fish's view of the sunlight.
- merreborn, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3I'd be a bit worried about how these things handle everything that comes with being in a river -- algae and other waterborne life growing on them, collisions with floating debris, etc.
- hiPpymIck, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5more biomimicry for alternative energy..these ones are about minimizing environmental impact of underwater tidal power
one of them is a reverse engineer of a fish tail -

the other imitates kelp
http://www.biopowersystems.com/biowave-animation.p ... - SteelChicken, on 05/12/2008, -4/+9how about put solar panels on roofs where they belong and leave real lily pads in the water
- Hemingrubbish, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3ned = wee *****
- zaren, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4So... the River Clyde isn't a shipping channel, is it? It doesn't look like anything bigger than a small outboard craft is going to be able to navigate that river as the installation is displayed.
- NorthAtlantic, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4Great Idea, it's probably quicker to hop across those things than go over the Kingston Bridge.
- dinostabOMG, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4Cool idea... but I wonder what the impact on the river ecology and its use as transportation would be?
- thatspsychotic, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Speaking of which, one could implement this idea in the reservoirs of hydroelectric dams.
- b0bby, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Yeah, I used to live in Glasgow - Nov-April are pretty much sun free... May & October are the only decent months, weather-wise. Not gonna happen unless the gov't wants to pay for it as decoration.
- Majink, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3***** Dugg for truth.
- analogkid01, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3"If it wasn't for the Nips
Being so good at building ships
The yards would still be open on the Clyde..." - ZebZ, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3It's otherwise unused/underused space, and already owned by the city?
- themonkman, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3I think when you strapped on your stupid this morning the straps were pulled too tight.
- kinstray, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Aye, neds will enjoy the target practice.
- MoralThreat, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2I'm seriously debating creating a second account so I can digg you down twice.
- kinstray, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Bloody hell.... did you miss anything? Are you a politician?
- kinstray, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2No *****... it's a proposal.
- kinstray, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Ha ha... I get it.
- Cattywampus, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2The submission's title is jumping the gun quite a bit. The article says, "the city is now considering testing a small pilot project."
- osmaker, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3wth diggers? Do your math and don't digg this guy down.
The math doesn't work. The river doesn't begin to provide enough surface area. And even if it did, we don't yet have the tech to build reserve facilities for when the sun isn't out or there is cloud cover (common in the area). - whatever01, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Because the space on the river is apparently considered available, and it's not hard to conceive of industrial/commercial uses of space that would require more energy than falls on their rooftops? Just spitballing here.
- themonkman, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3How about people that have ridiculously restrictive HOA's who won't let you put solar panels on your roofs. Also, how about those who don't want their home to be covered in them, either?
- KingGorilla, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2To sunburn: Your existence is a lie. Please kill yourself so that we may continue being right
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Now we just need giant robot death frogs.
anyways i would think it more suitable for Dubai or something than Scotland. and in the warmer climate the marine life could benefit from the shade as well. - werries, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2just pointing out one thing, salts have metals in them. dissolve. and thus, metallic water.
- silverleaves, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2I would think that the lily pads on the water would be in direct sunlight most of the time because there wouldn't be in shadow from obstructions.
Also most roofs are angled because of the snow and therefore would not be facing the sun all of the time.
This would be perfect for all of the western states and Florida. So why don't we do it instead of depending on oil or nuclear? It's just silly the way the oil companies rule our lives. - kinstray, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3The Clyde is mingin anyway... would you swim in it? Have you ever seen down to the bottom? Nut.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2How would the people of Glasgow use the river for boating if its filled with solar lily-pads?
