- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -32/+110We will stop mocking your religion when your religion stops mocking science.

Didn't you see the "Adam + Eve" in a heart engraved on the trunk? - DigitalJester, on 10/12/2007, -4/+60Pretty sucky first tree :/ Looks more like a stick of celery with broccoli attached
- avolant, on 10/12/2007, -5/+57because digg thrives on sensationalism
- jobenly, on 10/12/2007, -11/+55It's the oldest known fossil of a tree, not the first tree ever. Buried for being innaccurate. /joke
- davdev, on 10/12/2007, -14/+54Then you stand for ignorance over fact
- ursername180, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38What is a Watt-iez-a?
Oh so hilarious. - etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -12/+47Buried as inaccurate. It isn't the first tree ever - just the oldest tree found so far. Also there isn't a picture of the tree just an artists rendition.
Cool that it looks like a palm tree though… - Sirking, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40Well where's the tree? All I see is a "Reconstruction line drawing of Wattieza."
- skyfire1, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38Science bless america.
- 350Zed, on 10/12/2007, -35/+63Wow...
I guess this tree is exactly 6000 years old, because that's when the Bible says the world was created, right?
Or is it 6000 years + 5 days because that's the day God created trees?
[/sarcasm] - 01100100, on 10/12/2007, -15/+43Oldest "known" tree, not the oldest tree ever jerk. Why must digg titles be so inaccurate so often.
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -13/+40And fairy tales, may I add.
- engwar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I don't consider myself to be all that religious but I did spend a year in a Catholic seminary in a Midwestern red state. (It's a long story)
Even in what would be considered a fairly conservative environment the priests in religion class taught us that the bible is not always meant to be taken literally. Many of the stories are PARABLES meant to TEACH LESSONS and not necessarily meant to be taken literally.
It seems weird that so many people seem to need to believe that HISTORICAL ACCURACY = MORAL ACCURACY.
+ BTW, I expect to get dug down for mentioning religion in a positive light.
++ If I had to pick a religion I'd probably be Buddhist. - orlyfactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Wow. It looks like...a TREE!! Sorry for the spoiler, but someone had to do it.
- bobish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15i was expecting the great deku tree.
- Phearce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Merriam-Webster: Tree 1 a : a woody perennial plant having a single usually elongate main stem generally with few or no branches on its lower part.
But it does look like it would go well with melted butter. - datastorageguy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20I am a Christian and see no conflict between science and religion. Not sure why people on both sides react with such hostility and contempt on the subject.
- Rileyper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Mmmmmm Celery
- MadScientist420, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21@hobophobe
Thank you for misspelling your own state while in an attempt to say that people from Alabama aren't stupid inbreds. That was great. - Intrepion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9don't eat the apples! they're poisoned with Knowledge!
- tamurlane6, on 10/12/2007, -16/+25throwing ***** in there doesn't do much for your argument.
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Madscientist420: Pretty sure it was intentional. Notice the "banana."
- dorianh49, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9In Hebrew (the languange in which the "old testament" was originally written), the term we translate into English as "day" can mean an undetermined period of time. It could mean one day, several days, weeks, months, years, centuries, millenia, whatever. Just because the English language has a strict definition of the word "day" doesn't mean that it's the same way with another language.
Many people tend to write off the Bible because of what they've read from an English translation without doing research as to the original meanings of the original language. I know I'm getting dugg down/buried for this, but I really am just stating facts. - Sprules04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7except for the fact that broccoli isn't a fruit
- rarkai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10There is no where in the bible that suggests that the Earth is a certain age. It never said the "six days and nights" were counted they way we do.
People like you make atheists hate Christians more and more. - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@doddilus
No they actually meant 6 days, not 6 billion years. The old testament was written to be taken literally. The new testament is not to be taken literally since it was written around 300 years after Jesus' death-- and is based upon stories passed around through generations of people which are not accurate and embellished.
Of course you can take your own little spin on things to help justify the insanity of those books. - Nateon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Buried as innacurate. No forbidden fruit.
- capellathestar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8you are assuming that God's day is just as long as ours.
A day on Jupiter, for example is about 10 Earth-days long. - rarkai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Only a small group of Christians think the world is 6000 years old. It is too bad that everyone thinks they speak for the rest of group.
- piffboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@frankieb078
while i am an atheist, i agree with McTEndo. atheists are always accusing religious people of pushing their beliefs on them, but an atheist here is the one pushing first. the first person to bring the subject of religion up was at least not christian, and most likely an atheist. his arguement would have been better if he had not said ***** though. - Phearce, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16Right, and never mind that the Bible's stories are just tired versions of much older stories, from much older cultures. Cultures with written histories that pre-date the Biblical "creation" date.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Broccolli was the forbiden fruit.
- davdev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They don't and the article doesn't say it is. The title is misleading. It is just the oldest know tree. I am sure the first tree didn't reach 30' in height, but I could be wrong
- dylan420, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I, too, am from Alabama, and not inbred. I have thought about it, however.
to Hobophobe, How old are you? You should be use to people making fun of us by now. - NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15Maybe you should pray to god and see if he can give you a few upvotes? If not, it probably means god doesn't want to hear your *****.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Looks like a palm tree had an affair with a feather duster.
- capellathestar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5dcclown - its a shame you are getting dug down because I agree.
I think its like there is always someone to make "in Soviet Russia" joke in any thread, someone always brings up anti-religious regurgitation if anyone mentions ANYTHING scientific. - miguel077, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6World's first tree? ***** that, buried as innacurate.
- coachace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think I shall never see
a poem uglier than that tree. - TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4in Oklahoma it is
- doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8oh yea go ahead and take the rest of the bible 100% literally but when it comes to the 6 day creation god didn't really mean 6 earth days, he meant 6 god days which is actually like millions of years....
- engwar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6rarkai's comment also works well this way. :)
Only a small group of [Muslims] think [terrorism is OK]. It is too bad that everyone thinks they speak for the rest of group.

- LexisNexis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11It was god's beta version.
- an0nim0us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First tree ever, huh? If this is the tree of life, were all screwed....
- Jezper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2World's first tree? I don't think so. The oldest one we've found so far? Yes.
- capellathestar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Umm, average sequoias are like over 50'. Why is 30' tree shock you?
Tallest sequoia tree in present day is over 300 feet tall. -
