- KMye, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Exactly. This survey is kind of silly, as it mainly tells the obvious, that people in poorer nations consume less and use less energy, because they're less developed.
The Telegraph headline is completely misleading; developing countries in many many cases say *****-all to the environment when it comes to resource development, agriculture, and environmental pollution. On any real aggregate measure of care for the environment, there's no way in hell Brazil would be ranked above the US, or most other modern nations. - angusm, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1It's true that people in the Third World may have more environmentally-friendly lifestyles because they don't have the choice: of course you're going to end up walking or taking public transport if you can't afford a car, and of course you aren't going to run your aircon unit all summer if you're living in a palm-roof shack. But the study described in the article also measured attitudes, and the researchers concluded that people in the developing world " ... feel the most guilt about their environmental impact and are willing to do the most to minimize their impact."
I'd guess that that's also a matter of circumstances. In the West, we can insulate ourselves from the consequences of our actions with money and technology (for a time, at least). In the developing world, when you cut down all the trees in your neighborhood or dump waste in your own backyard, you tend to feel the consequences. There's nothing like watching your home crushed by a landslide or seeing your source of drinking water turn into toxic sludge to make you sit up and take notice. - SteelChicken, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1this is absolute *****
typical telegraph nonsense - antonycao, on 05/09/2008, -0/+0"they ARE more stupid"
BTW, I would say "they are less intelligent" if I were you. - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1that's because they more stupid.
