- Nekura20x6, on 09/16/2008, -0/+21His plan also calls for first converting cargo trucks to CNG. This will keep the cost of goods down.
Remember that he's just using CNG as a stopgap until we can get another solution in place. If we keep relying on crude oil, we're going to be screwed. - AmyVernon, on 09/15/2008, -2/+22That cab looks kinda cool in a geeky sorta way...
- kplo, on 04/01/2009, -1/+15why hate on the lego taxi?
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+11All your energy eggs in one basket is a bad idea regardless of which basket it is. That's why all energy sources should be used (NG, Oil, Wind, Water, Nuclear, Solar, etc).
- yngtimmy, on 09/16/2008, -0/+11do people not realize that our economy is built on oil? Infrastructure is here for gasoline. It works. Drill, get prices and national energy security under control, all the while innovate and revamp our infrastructure to something else. It won't happen overnight.
Can you imagine what would happen to our economy if gas were to hit $6.00 a gallon due to war or terrorism in some sandpit or jungle country that we have nothing to do with? - silveravnt, on 09/16/2008, -1/+11Here in Oklahoma, Pickens donates more money every year than I will make in my lifetime. He's not the a-hole you make him out as.
- Bbanda, on 09/15/2008, -1/+10Legos for life. With that said, will someone tell Pickens Honda made a natural gas civic and its reasonably priced. Have him drop his money into making more of those things they can't even keep up with the demand.
- cdtoad, on 09/16/2008, -1/+10Don't be fooled by his wind program either. He's trying to do a land grab so he can get the rights to the Ogallala Aquifer and resell the water.
- DonQueso, on 09/16/2008, -3/+12who gives a *****? regardless of what the solution is.......someone will make a killing. invest in cng and then you can make some money too?
Freaking moron. - zscottkilgore, on 09/16/2008, -0/+7i'm all for pickens dropping his cash in research, but leave the new cars to the pros--not the oilmen
- lpmiller, on 09/16/2008, -1/+8Frankly, I shudder to think how much it would cost to heat my home if every one started driving around in Natural gas cars.
- mbraynard, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6No plan is entirely 'drill drill drill' alone, but 'drill drill drill' is part of the initial phase of the Pickens Plan. He literally uses the phrase 'Drill drill drill' right here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ30c8IZQR8 - SmartfulDodger, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6That would be true, if natural gas were a scarce resource. But there's more than enough NG to go around! For starters, NG can be collected off of fermenting manure on farms. And you know how people keep talking about turning algae into fuel? That'll produce NG too!
- IllBeBack, on 09/16/2008, -3/+9Yeah, shame on anyone for trying to make money!
CNG is good. Don't let one guy and your attempts to keep him down stop you from getting behind it. - Synova, on 09/16/2008, -4/+10Yeah there are some flaws, but at least it actually is a plan and not "DRILL DRILL DRILL".
- svendm, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5Um... people.. Gas doesn't HAVE to be fossil. You can get quite a lot of methane out of rotting sewage, for instance.
- DonQueso, on 09/16/2008, -1/+6who doesn't want quick profits?
so let me get this right.....we need to get off oil and stop letting oilmen run the country......but we must do it in a way where no one makes any money? - Quizboy, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but the only reason anyone cares about 'going green' is how much money it could make them. If CNG ends up costing less for consumers in the long run, then why not make the change regardless of how much money some billionaire makes?
- diggit83, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4Guys....some of you are stuck on the issue of price....its about becoming independent from the middle east for our energy needs.
If it were exactly the same price as gas...or hell even a bit higher, id STILL want to goto CNG. - BelatedHero, on 09/16/2008, -2/+6The minutiae of his plan aside, you can be sure that with this whole energy plan of his T. Boone is merely lookin' out for T. Boone. And don't forget. This is the guy who gave $3 million to the swift-boaters.
- bpoteat, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4What exactly is an oilman if not someone who got insanely rich off of oil companies?
- SmartfulDodger, on 09/16/2008, -1/+5Why not both?
- ChristmasPoo, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4There are kits available which will allow your vehicle run on both. Typically there is a switch that will alternate between natural gas or the current standard gas.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4I hear he owns part of the sun, wind, oceans and earth. I guess we should avoid Solar, Wind, Water and Geothermal sources of energy too.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4How is that a response to "That cab looks kinda cool in a geeky sorta way..."
- OYAHHH, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3Um,
If you bothered to watch Pickens TV commercial you will see a Honda Civic natural gas vehicle in the ad. - bobbynoxious, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3I am from the USA but working in Brazil. One of our work trucks was converted to CNG and many places around the city will do the conversion, and many cars and stations have CNG. The problem is that the savings is not that much anymore. I'm guessing it went from about 50% savings to now 35% and lessening. That is probably due to the increasing demand and increasing prices but less and less people are doing it except for public transportation. Many taxis in Bangkok also use natural gas. Instead of promoting it like it is some revolutionary idea I wish these people would do some thorough analyses to prove their point. Can't we just invest our money into making efficient and quick charging electric vehicles already.
- VigRoco, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3I for one welcome our new 'Big Gas' overlords.
(it certainly has a better ring than 'Big Oil') - inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3I live in Oklahoma City and the biggest natural gas company in America, Chesapeake Energy, is based here and is expanding immensely. I'm all for CNG. We need to explore every avenue we can to solve this energy crisis.
http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=104617 ... - ihavebeenseen, on 09/16/2008, -6/+9Anybody else see these Chesapeake Energy commercials about how cheap CNG is compared to gas? Natural Gas is a terrible idea for personal vehicles. It might be cheap right now, but if we switch a massive number of cars to use CNG then demand factors are going to drive the price to parity will oil based gasoline.
- svendm, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Volvo also has CNG versions of the S80 and V70.
- SmartfulDodger, on 09/17/2008, -0/+2It's true. I'll bet Rockefeller is spinning in his grave thinking about the billions he let float away.
The thing is, our large-scale farms are doing the same thing. Manure creates a very potent greenhouse gas, but can be scrubbed into natural gas if its captured. Any farm that lets its manure sit in the fields is literally letting money float away into the air. - joeanon, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2I think Pickens is envisioning expanding gas infrastructure. Hence the taxi angle.
Natural gas is nice, but it's still a very inefficient way to power a car. Electric is far more efficient, but lacks the energy storage. I'd prefer an electric car, with multi fuel options. So I can get my hybrid powered by gas, diesel, or natural gas.
THAT is the solution, not more internal combustion and hundreds of moving parts vs a hub wheel electric motor.
For now.. Algae Biofuel... natural gas is limited and it's great for hot water and home heat.
Algae biofuel is powerful like gas, making it far more powerful than natural gas, probably at least three times as powerful per volume. So it's a better transportation solution and it's 100% renewable.
PLUS the gas infrastructure is already there. We need put plug in algae biodiesel, biogas and hopefully bioplastics. That also have ran jets on the stuff.
Soooo it's better than natural gas and requires vastly less infrastructure change over.
That also means it would be a major export natural gas cars would likely not be that big and would require conversions or new vehicles. Algae biofuels can use all the existing vehicles with fewer needs for conversion. I think again ... people are still not grasping why making a large long term investment to move away from unsustainable fuels creates more money in the long run.
The only real problem is the oil industry trying to undercut your algae biofuel.
For America that's not a big problem really because we don't have that much oil left and now every well is smaller and takes more money to setup. Well more like since 1971 or so when the US hit peak oil production. Today however the effect is more dramatic as we desperately look for new reserves and find fewer and fewer.
T BOONE PICKENS..
PICK ME !!! - SmartfulDodger, on 09/16/2008, -3/+5Damn that T Boone! He's only saving our planet from global warming to get rich! We have to stop him... drill baby drill!
- Atomic05, on 09/16/2008, -1/+3I see this guy's ads all the time on regular cable TV, and even though I'm starting to loath them from hearing them all the time the idea seems sound to me. Hopefully he can be convinced that using existing equipment is the way to go and puts his money into developing actual implementation; like getting CNG adopted by organizations that could benefit from them like city busses, shipping/mail services and so on.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -2/+4He also was the financier of the Swift Boat attacks in the 2004 campaign. He has also refused to pay out the bounty for proving the swift boat vets liars.
- peter78, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2CNG is relatively clean when it comes to carbon, but it would still makes us slave to the natural gas owners of the world.
- skav, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Aww man I was expecting a Rick Roll.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU - shylove, on 09/16/2008, -2/+4I'm sorry but I just don't feel ripe for the Pickin' I happen to think it is perfectly natural to use natural gas to heat our homes and not use it all up as fast as we can for fear we might not make a profit off of it if alternative fuels catch on!! In any case it wil be a big energy switch when we have to heat our homes some other way. A word of warning, don't let a takeover artist take over the country, all they want is quick profits.
- le12484, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Boone Pickens have a Honda Civic that run on CNG at his home right now. He also use a natural gas compressor in his garage to fill up the Civic. I know this because he told me at an event just last week. The problem he said is he only live 1 mile from work.
BTW he is not going after your cars. He is going after semi-trailer trucks. He want company to replace them when their old ones are out of service. - le12484, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Boone Pickens have a Honda Civic that run on CNG at his home right now. - sporky, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Glad to see someone is interested in Picken's plan, but the author seems a bit misguided. He writes, "But, yo, T. Boone! Wake up and smell the coffee..." and proceeds to talk about CNG vehicles already in use such as the Civic GX as if it were news to Pickens. Mr. Pickens drives a Civic GX and uses a Phil. I agree that the taxi is ugly, but this article is a dud.
- GhostRidr, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2That why Pickens says CNG (and wind) is a temporary measure. One to get the US off of foreign energy. He totally agrees we should still keep striving for alternative energy sources. I happen to think he's right.
- astroslut, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Such as the Pros at Ford, or GM?
/sarcasm - jasdf, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2His plan is to divert natural gas from electricity production to vehicles, the demand wouldn't change as much as you suspect.
- astroslut, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Wow, someone that gets it.
You should say that
"oil comes from terrorists, and CNG comes from good-old Americans.
So if you don't support CNG, you don't support America.
Are you a terrorist."
Then people will think it's a good idea, out of fear, and not common sense, such as jobs, money, supply security, economical boom all for the U.S and a stepping stone to better technologies in the future. - zantos420, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2outkasts muslim cousin in: pimp my cab?

"That would be true, if natural gas were a scarce resource. But there's more than enough NG to go around!"
It used to be so plentiful that in the early days of drilling the gas would be vented off into the atmosphere. - angryfirelord, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1Honestly, I believe natural gas would be better for heating homes rather than fueling cars. In fact, I'd say my parents spend more heating the house in the winter compared to fueling up at the pump. Fortunately, most propane appliances require a small adjustment to run on natural gas and oil burning appliances probably require a small conversion. (the furnace would need to be replaced) I'd say that would be more economical rather than putting another fossil fuel burning car on the road, only to have it become obsolete in 20 years.
