[PHOTO] Stunning 360 Degree View from the top of Mount Everest
apod.nasa.gov — What would it be like to stand atop the tallest mountain on Earth? To see a full panoramic vista from there, scroll right. Visible are snow peaked mountains, tremendous cliffs, distant plateaus, the tops of clouds, and a dark blue sky. Mt. Everest stands 8.85 kilometers above sea level. Locals call it "Sagarmatha" meaning "forehead of the sky".

http://www.panoramas.dk/fullscreen2/full22.html - swiecki, on 10/11/2007, -22/+14This is horrible. I think that this sight should be reserved for those with the balls to actually climb the son of a b*tch.
- MrSketch, on 10/11/2007, -14/+6@Hipple:"If only my desktop had a 48:9 aspect ration, this would my new wallpaper"
The image is 4103x494 pixels, that's more of a ~74.75:9 aspect ratio. - L4WL3RS34L, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Dugg for not using "Amazing."

Just tried it, and I can't make it work - it just shows up as all white. Perhaps the image is too big for the skydome memory size? - Buddhaismybuddy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2@koreanannoyance
Wow dude, you just insulted a 5 year old...wow
dugg down for being a ***** *****
P.S. if you are reading this could you please reply and tell what could possibly motivate you to insult a 5 year old? Seriously, I just dont understand. - StriferDiem, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2This is an amazing image. It makes you realize how beautiful our world is, lets hope that Everest is never spoiled.
- rochdale, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I thought it was funny.

I must say, it was significantly easier to click the link than to move to that location myself. Although, I think my ass did budge slightly as I reached for the mouse. I can't be sure though.- Jakyll, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Sweet, saved me the trip.

- dshPls, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Terragen 2 ALMOST looks this good, I love to try and mimic this stuff in the program, so I don't ever have to leave my house and actually visit these places...
- StalfoS, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Man.. why did they have to compress the image so much. The JPEG artifacts really detract from the image.
- stevenhood, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Here's an interactive Mt. Everest panorama, where you can zoom in and and look around.

- brianbennett, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5...that helps explain why people are crazy enough to climb up there... excellent view.

- mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1"Locals call it "Sagarmatha" meaning "forehead of the sky""
Yeah, they also say that it's the mountain that no bird could cross.. but they're incorrect according to BBC's The Planet Earth. - MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2wow that is stunning.
- wattznext, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5This picture is breathtaking!
However, i must point out that Everest is not the tallest mountain on earth. It is however, the highest point from sea level. the tallest mountain on earth is Mauna Kea. Check it out here
http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2001/BeataUnke.shtml
"Mountains are generally measured from sea level, in which case Mount Everest (29,028 feet; 8,848 meters) is king. Hawaii's Mauna Kea, though, rises an astonishing 33,476 feet (10,203 meters) from the depths of the Pacific Ocean floor. Measuring from base to peak, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on earth." - patkirkrick, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0"Mt. Everest stands 8.85 kilometers above sea level, roughly the maximum height reached by international airplane flights."
Wrong, wrong, wrong. Most jet flights start out at about 30,000 ft (9 km) and will step-climb to higher levels as the fuel burns off... about 39,000 ft (12 km) is the norm, but in some cases long-range 747s can and do top out at 43,000 ft (13 km). - Azio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The title should read "Stunning 360 degree view of horrible JPEG compression artifacts".
- CZzyzx41, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1This was great back in the 20th century when I first saw a panorama pic of the summit.
The shocking twist? It's great now, even though I see the picture every year, it never gets old. - slapded, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5What's the difference between a Everest Climber and a Golfer?
Golfer goes: Whack, *****! Climber goes : *****, WHACK! - MBHoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Awesome.
And to think, you've achieved all that, but you're only half way home. ;)
Civilization looks to be a long, long way away. :) - Devroush, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1"2005 March 6 "
IS HE SERIOUS? - lostradamus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"Stunning"? Picture looks like it came from a $2 disposable camera.
- colonelDebugger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Well, huzzah huzzah, yet another stunning, breathtaking, awesome photo digg.
- wrighteq, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Does anyone have a link to a higher quality image? I would love to print it out and put it on my wall, but the quality of the linked image is just too low.
Thanks in advance - randomdude1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0FTA:
"Sagarmatha" means "forehead of the sky".
*****. Sagarmatha means "Mother of the Ocean" (Sagar = Ocean, matha = mother). Although, why you would call Mt Everest the 'mother of the ocean' is beyond me.- Diganta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mother would be "Ma" or is less commonly "Mata". Head is would be "Matha".
"Sagar" could be ocean. As in the name Vidyasagar which means ocean of knowledge. Maybe "sagar" in Nepali
is sky, but in most Sanskrit derived languages sky would be "aakaash". So in order for it to mean forehead of the sky it should be "Aakaashkapaala" which just sounds silly.
- Diganta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mother would be "Ma" or is less commonly "Mata". Head is would be "Matha".
- FujiwaraTofu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I would hate to have climbed to the summit, and in the end realized I forgot my camera at home.
- parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What the hell? Wasn't it interesting when I dugg it?
- blackmh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Here is another one:
#FFFFFF - callofduty2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2会当临绝顶,一览众山小
- twrife, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Would be cooler if it was made in flash.
- hybridcreation, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The blackness at the top is awesome. So much closer to space.
- wedesoft, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You can download the free software "Stellarium" and an Everest panorama from here:
http://www.stellarium.org/
http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Landscapes
Then you can stand on Mount Everest and look around. - MechaTC, on 10/17/2007, -2/+0buried - "Stunning in the title"
