- KMye, on 10/23/2007, -11/+42Jesus christ, choices made to help the environment aren't supposed to be bragged about. You're supposed to do them because it's the right thing to do. Do you put a note on your FB profile that you returned someone's lost wallet with the cash inside, or that you called your mum on Mothers' Day?
I'm sure this will be great fun for pathetic excuses for environmentalists to compete and see who can be "greener" when they probably don't even understand half of the issues.
"I got a leaf for converting my car to bio-diesel, because I think this will help stop global warming."
I'm completely clueless that I haven't significantly lowered my CO2 emmissions at all, and that I've helped to raise world food prices by 50% in 5 years, and that I'm helping accelerate deforestation in developing countries. Yay me, I'm so *****! - minox, on 10/23/2007, -6/+27Finally, an online equivalent of a Prius so people can pat each other on the back for how progressive they are.
- seaner, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Direct Link to App: http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?api_key=a1b3fff3cee92436e04e2307ebc5b364
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/23/2007, -4/+17I think you are missing the point of this application. It's got nothing to do with "bragging", it's about garnering support for environmental issues. Many people don't understand many of the basic things you can do to improve the environment in your everyday life, or they think it's just too damn inconvenient, or they don't think it will really make a difference. This is a very simple way to let your friends know what you are doing in your own life to try to help, even if just a little. Perhaps some of your friends will see this and think "you know, I never really thought about that, I could do that." That's all it takes. This isn't bragging, it's just one more way to make people aware of the issue and create discussion and hopefully spread support.
Even if this was specifically designed to be a competition, would that really be a bad thing? What bad could possibly come from friends competing to reduce their impact on the environment? I mean, we compete with people on every level throughout our lives to better ourselves, and that's a good thing. Why would something like this be any different? - juliustan, on 10/23/2007, -5/+13buried for telling me to "digg this" and emphasising that I "gotta digg it"
- DatumPirate, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12First several comments read like an infomercial...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Sadly "commitments" and actually doing something are two totally different things.
- hakatak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+51) facebook is made for showing off, this is cooler showing-off than Cities I've Visited or Movies I've Seen.
2) users can add your own green activities, maybe you'll see something you'd never thought of
3) most of the complaints here center around the (flawed) argument that "this facebook app does not solve every environmental problem, therefore it should not try to solve any." once again I am astounded at the logical capacity of the average digger. - drunkard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I think that the simple awareness of environmental concerns that this FB app may be able to bring forth is a positive addition regardless of it's merit on any other terms, and all the negative feedback I have seen here seems to have missed that essential point.
- kbaloun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I appreciate very much your looks at my app. We're celebrating together the good things we do. The positive friendly peer pressure will make a real difference, and we will quantify it. Information, coming from your real friends, is both hard to come by and very valuable. It's easier to criticize than try to make a difference. Hey, we're all just doing what we can, yeah?
Thanks for teaching me digg etiquette - next time I won't beg for a digg. At least I didn't pay for any of them. Please do actually try it, before you say you don't think it's useful - because you're never seen anything like it before. And we've only just begun! - jaynesweet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The comments posted here by the nay-sayers are ignorant at best. You're saying that the 'fortune cookie' app or the 'movie and music review' apps are any better or less bandwagon-ish than this?
At least we're trying to DO something about the huge mess that we humans have created on this earth, rather than just putting down everyone. No, participating in 'I am green' doesn't mean a person will actually make a change; but it gives us ideas on more things we can do to make a difference. Personally, I added things that I already do! If we have gotten even one person to change one aspect of their life, to me, it's worth it. Plus it doesn't cost anything!
I agree with a previous poster who stated " What bad could possibly come from friends competing to reduce their impact on the environment?" As Americans we compete so much- why not have a little fun with it? If you don't want to 'be green' don't add the app! - yahkouh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I just don't understand why people are bashing this app so much! True, maybe the things suggested in the app don't do that much to stop global warming but it definitely doesn't hurt. You say this is a bragging app and that people adding it don't even know about the real issues, well maybe this will encourage them to learn about the issues! Why are you people so angry!? Chillll out...
- hiPpymIck, on 10/23/2007, -1/+4similar UK idea..
(70,000 ppl signed up at Glastonbury mudrock festival last month)
http://www.icount.org.uk/
green info
http://environment.guardian.co.uk/ethicalliving - rb89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The app may not make a huge difference, and the effectiveness of some of the ideas there can definitely be debated, but I think it's definitely a good thing to get people talking about the environment and examine things they already do or things they could do to help out.
- dgaspard, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4My favorite was, let's celebrate being green with a concert around the world. We'll fly all the performers on private jets and they will show up in large tour buses. Not to mention all of our attendees will do the same while talking on their cell phones. Oh yeah we have $50 tee-shirts made in China where their are no environmental laws. We might as well band Dihydrogen Monoxide while we're at it.
- maxputer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Because it's not easy being green!
~Kermit the Frog
But seriously it's a good idea, lets share ideas about how to be greener... why not make being green "cool" or attempt too... seems like a perfectly good thing to generate some buzz around. - Gaki, on 10/23/2007, -1/+3Yeah, that will show those hippies, pissing in your own backyard.
- greenfirefly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Providing a list helps others to make decisions they might otherwise be ostracized for making. Support don't eviscerate progress.
- Digitalfilm43, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Great, now how the hell are we going to deal with all this SMUG???
- aiforbes, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2I agree about the bragging being ridiculous. But keep in mind, the 'brags' like all the other 'leaves' within this app are user-generated. There's a Digg-like system in place where other users can give pluses or minuses to how green (or how valid) a 'leaf' is -- plus gives you options to comment. Whenever I see someone who's doing something dubiously green (eg. washing dishes by hand instead of in the dishwasher), I add a comment with a link to more info.
It's a brand new app, not going to be perfect out of the box . . . but off to a very good start IMNSHO. - aiforbes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2As I said above - it's a brand new app, not going to be perfect out of the box . . . but off to a very good start IMNSHO.
Good things to note:
- The 'leaves' within this app are user-generated. There's a Digg-like system in place where other users can give pluses or minuses to how green (or how valid) a 'leaf' is
-- Gives you options to comment on the 'leaves.' Whenever you see something dubiously green (eg. washing dishes by hand instead of in the dishwasher), add a comment with a link to more info. How's that for educational and consciousness-raising? - jdhammer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1UN-believable......absolutely stunning.
You sir, are a moron. There's more scientific consensus about this than there is about other things we just accept as fact. - Shelby69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm a little concerned about the energy the app uses. You have to click and go back to the page for each "leaf" you grow. You should be able to go down the list and check a number of them, then save the changes -- this would take a LOT less time and computer energy
HA HA someone left that comment! Get off the computer if your that bothered! - madroneDorf, on 10/23/2007, -6/+7Anything that asked to be digged (dugg?) , should be buried on principle, if something is worth digging it will be digged on its own merits.
The ***** kid jumping up and down yelling pick me pick me for kickball teams was obnoxious back in grade school, and so it this - jdhammer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sorry to rain on your parade and expose you as an ignoramus, but the reason being vegan is helping the environment is because it takes a huge amount of resources to produce meat for people to consume. One pound of beef takes 12,000 gallons of water to produce. It sounds like exaggeration but it's the truth. THAT'S how. Might wanna fact check before spouting off there fella.
- Centaurus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1how wonderful to see so many nobrainers fighting to become King Dumber! You can't realize how good it makes me feel to have made real choices in my life that mean something for everyone. I could not say it better. Waiting for history to prove us right is something I shall let you all do, apart from devouring your insides with hate and reasonableness. I shall only stand to the bragging comments that really tease my pride. The second question that came in my mind after I asked myself for the first time, 'what if we can't make it through this challenge?" was 'what can I do?' And my mind automatically went to a small green book that was handed out to us one day back in high school talking about things we could do to use less resources. It was full of such little ideas and a lot of information about how many years does it take for plastic cups to be broken down and how the water we wash our cars with comes back into our glasses. All people need to exchange information. The magic word is networking. So thanks you guys for showing us how good this is done.
- revenge7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am only asking. I didn't know on way or another.
Thanks for insulting me, though. - Yazilliclick, on 10/23/2007, -4/+5I'm all for people doing things to help the environment.
I'm sick and tired though of envrironmentalists and BS like this. This is just another join the bandwagon, be one of the gang, smoke the weed 'efforts' where nobody gives a flying ***** about the actual issue or knows jack ***** about them. They're only joining because it's 'cool'. Typical american attitudes these days where people will hop on any social bandwagon but god forbid they would actual learn anything. - Micaylah, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I really do think you're missing the point. While it may certainly be set up to look like bragging rights on the surface, it is really teaching those of us who take this seriously, and have done so for most of our lives, other methods of "being green". I cant count how many little ideas I have gathered from other folks, the discussions I have had as a result of this app, or the natural progression of friends who have finally jumped on that proverbial bandwagon being carted around at the moment. The fact that they finally jumped is fine with me as I recognize the the world is made up of a lot lemmings. Its just the way humans are, and I for one am happy about this "grand lemming jump".
- Gaki, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2As opposed to the brainless non-hippie scum with seemingly one word in his vocabulary?
- dogstylee, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Good job, only another 19million more people to go (per day) to counter-effect that new powerplant China builds every week. You guys realise that trees shed their leaves every year, which decay, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, don't you.... hurry, plant more trees!
- AlexDenne, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1Hey, why are you guys dismissing an idea which is helping to lessen the effects of global warming... as my motto goes,
If it works, use it - barryrutherford, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0join facebook i am green campaign now !
- iamjake, on 10/23/2007, -6/+6The short version:
OMG LOOK AT HOW COOL I AM!!! I CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT! LOVE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE - mrhaines, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1While the "leaves" this application lists are all good, this approach comes off as "holier than thou". Not a great way to encourage other people to change their behaviour. Although I guess it does help establish social norms, but it is more likely to just piss off a lot of people.
- Centaurus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0go to G O O G L E . C O M and write in the search box under the logo ' Solar activity 'not the cause of global warming'
- mooky1977, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0kbaloun,
Good app, but could you find a way to change it to allow deleting a custom "what else" ... like I added one, with a typo or three, so I had to add it again ... I unchecked the typo-ed one, but its still on the list of selectable options.... - insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1"122K commitments"
ha. - thekungfuman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I hate the thin line between sharing good ideas and bragging about your good deeds. It's so easy to cross and it makes telling the difference between the good guys and the jerks that much harder. At least on Facebook you know you're bound to deal with a bunch of posers.
- jehanr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Another great FB app, for the socially aware:
http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?api_key=48292ebb0aa55d824b16233f094acd28 - aiforbes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Yeah, Live Earth was pretty stupid. But that shouldn't be a reflection on the Green Movement as a whole. There are people doing good things This Facebook app is trying to get more people to do more of them. So be positive, right?
- Bakkster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1How are being Vegan or having "only 1 child or adopting an international child" (actual 'Leaves') at all helping the environment? That's right, because this app should be called "I'm a hippie, look at me!"
- revenge7, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1So, has it been confirmed that humans are causing global warming? Last I heard, scientists were disagreeing about that.
- nuclearzombie, on 10/23/2007, -4/+3suckers!..... I'm just going to buy me a bunch of carbon offsets from ebay, and not change a single thing I do. Actually now I can drive more and set off more fireworks knowing that I'm not hurting the environment as much.
Actually this application is helpful in the fact that it helps me realize how much carbon the earth owes me. I want my 25,127 tons back in the form of coal or diamonds...................... what's the hold-up Earth? don't have the goods? - inactive, on 10/23/2007, -3/+1Yeah you're really showing them...
Jackass - jkerr, on 10/23/2007, -6/+4BREAKING: Facebook users will add anything to their profile if presented to them
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Wow is that lame.
- janellie, on 10/23/2007, -9/+6Great app to help you think of more ways to be green in your day to day life!
- sato, on 10/23/2007, -6/+3if everything on earth died, we wouldnt have to worry about this crap. lets speed that process up and bury this.
- apples8606, on 10/23/2007, -9/+5Finally an application that is worth having! I love learning how to make a difference in the environment, and I think its totally awesome to see that other people care too!
