- novenator, on 02/14/2009, -21/+73Let me remind the first 3 posters on this thread that offshore drilling is only a short term solution, and not a very viable one at that. This would only add a very small amount to the domestic production. We need to ween ourselves off of our addiction to oil (fuel efficient cars, green energy for hybrids, etc.).
- inactive, on 02/14/2009, -12/+46Guess who outlawed offshore drilling? Ronald Reagan.
- Eiknujrac, on 02/14/2009, -5/+24Don't let the facts get in the way of their blind hatred now.....
"It would take at least a decade for oil companies to obtain permits, procure equipment, and do the exploration necessary to get the oil out of the ground, most industry analysts say. And even then, they add, the amount of new oil produced would probably be too small to significantly affect world oil prices."
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/06 ... - Nightrain117, on 02/14/2009, -8/+25lol, ween. But childish humor aside, it's ignorant to blindly rely on oil drilling that is slowly destroying the environment, especially when it's going to run out soon. This is the most realistic course of action.
- SemiSarcastic, on 02/14/2009, -6/+22Wait...weren't we hating Obama a few minutes ago on the 1100 page stimulus plan that no one read? *sigh* internet users are fickle, doesn't look like we'll have polite discourse here either...
- robertj15, on 02/14/2009, -7/+21As a person who frequents the Jersey shore during the summer, I'll say no thanks to offshore drilling.
Build better cars, thanks. - MacLiberal, on 02/14/2009, -22/+34Another reason we elected Pres O, the environment counts for something now.
- lordmike, on 02/14/2009, -27/+38When did Digg become Fox News? This is the 4th right wing thread in 3 hours!
- fajitamelt, on 02/14/2009, -2/+12It was Bush 41. He signed the executive order.
Bush 43 retracted his father's order.
And as soon as he did, gas prices fell. - motivatedguy, on 02/14/2009, -6/+15Louisiana has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country right now (5.8%). Know why? The oil and gas industry. 1/3 of the oil we consume comes from my state. Invest in energy Mr. President. And I'm not talking about those goofy windmills that Senator Kennedy doesn't even want in his own backyard...
http://article.wn.com/view/2009/01/17/Sen_Ted_Kenn ... - jayjayjoni, on 02/14/2009, -5/+14I'm all for offshore drilling if it creates jobs.
- MacEnvy, on 02/14/2009, -13/+21You'll always see it in finance-related threads (of which energy policy always plays a part these days). Digg conservatives like to think that they all have PhDs in Economic Theory.
Given the inaccuracy of their predictions over the last few years, I'm a little skeptical of their qualifications. - tinygibbles, on 02/14/2009, -10/+17Let the states decide. California has decided that tourism accounts for more dollars than drilling ever would. Texas has decided the other way.
- bogdon6, on 02/14/2009, -3/+10Except of course that he didn't.

Pumping black goo is nice, but the real problem is that there's a finite amount of black goo to pump, so by doing all of this we really just end up delaying the inevitable. There are better ways and we need to be exploring them now, not when it's too late. - fauxbro, on 02/14/2009, -1/+7to all those who will dig me down it would cost me $35k in equiptment and installation for a photovoltic system to power my house in peak and nominal power usage. I'll never see that investment pay for itself
- inactive, on 02/14/2009, -3/+8We have more than enough natural gas right here in America. We just need to start running our cars with it.
- CaptObvious, on 02/14/2009, -1/+6Exactly. This is not telling anyone who has been paying attention anything new. Obama has said this before, way before.
- inactive, on 02/14/2009, -5/+10Not really. I remember there was a big green movement in the early nineties. It sort of died a bit with the arrival of the tech bubble.
Part of this resurgence in environmentalism is due to efforts by the oil and gas industry to discredit climate change science. It's a pushback against the propaganda. - Zalyster, on 02/14/2009, -1/+6Seriously...There's a movement toward a larger government here with more centralized laws. Is California very similar to Maine? In some respects, yes...But mostly, not at all. We need to leave more decisions to the states themselves since they all have different demographics. This is the United STATES of America, not the United GOVERNMENT of America.
- WorldLeader, on 02/14/2009, -1/+6Take out a second mortgage
Take that trip to Hawaii
Live on credit debt
...
See the problem is that your "drill here drill now" plan is only a short-term solution. In the end, it comes back and bites you in the ass. Hard. - angryredplanet, on 02/14/2009, -0/+5Given the economic crisis that the world is engaged in, the US in particular is damn lucky that oil is at $40 a barrel. Americans shouldn't be scoffing at green cars, they should be choosing their preferred model.
- bjs3171, on 02/14/2009, -0/+5oil is used for other things besides car fuel.
- rheaume, on 02/14/2009, -4/+9They started whining before the inauguration
- mastersmite, on 02/14/2009, -0/+5coal seems to be working just fine, has been for years. you don't seen people walking outside and then falling over dead because the air is too polluted to breath, it isn't like you need to wear a respirator to avoid getting sick walking out to get your mail etc.
- bogdon6, on 02/14/2009, -1/+6It does. About 160,000 jobs: http://www.instituteforenergyresearch.org/2009/01/ ...
- nymphetamine, on 02/14/2009, -7/+12You realize it's only been a month, right?
- MacEnvy, on 02/14/2009, -1/+6I can't take any site that publishes gems like this seriously:
http://www.therightperspective.org/?p=0009
http://www.therightperspective.org/?p=0010
http://www.therightperspective.org/?p=0011
Note the file names - these are three sequential articles picked more or less at random, and the stupidity is overpowering. Bunch of nutters, that's all they are. - inactive, on 02/14/2009, -4/+9LOL
- inactive, on 02/14/2009, -4/+9Oil/Gas will never cease utility in America--sure we may not want to use it for cars but we still need it for heating homes and a few generators. While I say BUILD better cars, I also think its important for us to achieve energy independence. I want out country to sustain itself just in case our relations with the middle east go in the tank. I don't want us to depend on any country for our energy needs. Wheter you choose to believe it or not, ENERGY is an IMPORATNT factor in how we live our lives. We enjoy being safe in our homes because of a strong military. We need a strong energy source within our own country the same way!
One commentator up there posted that he or she does not want oil drilling because he or she wants to enjoy the beach every now and then--how selfish to your country?? - BassMastr, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4Yeah I'm sure everyone thought gas would never hit 4.50 either. I bet if you asked if Atlanta would be out of gas for two weeks people would have bet against that too.
- altgeeky1, on 02/14/2009, -5/+9My view is not even environmental:
When we have a complete DISASTER, we'll damn well WISH we had these reserves!
Not only that, but we'll resent the people who brag about low fuel economy.
During the last major war the US fought, when people did not conserve or ration for the troops (ie, zoot suiters, etc) they got their asses_kicked. Now the zoot suiters hide behind oversized flag pins. - mfc5200, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4Oil is going to become harder and more expensive in the future as cheap supplies dwindle; the transition is inevitable. But, we should still have as much domestic supply IMO in order to ease the transition, which is going to be painful (not easy to break a 100+ year habit)
- erreon, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4Stay off of Infowars.com and you won't have to keep so much tin foil laying around. Seriously you can't throw all kinds of BS together and then tag it with infowars.com at the bottom and expect to not get buried to hell and back.
- PeoplePeople, on 02/14/2009, -5/+9Agreed, but we are in a recession. Where we do need to move away, now is not the time. Lets get our economy back THEN worry about independence from oil. This could lower gas prices and would also create more jobs.
Again, I agree with you 100% we do need to move away, but can we wait 4 or 5 years till this crisis is over? Besides, its not a viable option right now for many Americans to buy these new cars. Once they all have jobs, then they buying will begin again, and hopefully people will see how necessary green cars are.
:) - CaptObvious, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4Ya know, I really wanna find 'They' and kick they's ass.
- AlterLite, on 02/14/2009, -6/+10It is going to be very interesting to see how O handles the spin when gas goes back up to $4.00 a gallon and then has to explain why are now that much further behind in drilling for our own oil.
- Maynza, on 02/14/2009, -4/+8Contrary to popular belief, Digg users do not have a hive mind.
- wkrausmann, on 02/14/2009, -1/+4I'm not addicted to oil, it's just that the gasoline that is made from it fuels my ***** car! A car that I'm just able to afford.
- angryredplanet, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3"I know you guys are really into this whole climate change theory being sound science even though there is not nearly enough data to make that call..."
Clearly you were assessing the situation with something other than the data in hand! It doesn't get any clearer and the additional data gained vindicates anthropogenic climate change. As yet, there is NO peer reviewed science refuting anthropogenic climate change and denialism has no leg to stand on, so where are you coming from?
You speak of people who speak of "global cooling"? Well that's called hearsay, for obvious reasons, and is legally discounted as evidence. Have you even looked at the data or are you just a parrot?
You are yet another armchair expert who deems they know more than the scientists. - Strongwings, on 02/14/2009, -3/+6Well, that's just great. You hear that, Ed? Bears. Now you're putting the whole station in jeopardy.
- inactive, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3It would be very unwise to drill there because millions of Americans rely on the Great Lakes for drinking water, and oil spills are inevitable in drilling zones. Therefore, drilling would eventually result in some degree of drinking water contamination, and that cannot occur.
- saisumimen, on 02/14/2009, -1/+4Wait until Jeb Bush runs in 2012.
- redxii, on 02/14/2009, -2/+5It's at $40 now, but OPEC/investors are itching to get back to $150 and beyond once more people are able to afford it. They think with the stimulus that will happen overnight.
- lwhassell, on 02/14/2009, -1/+4You just answered your own question. It became a federal issue the moment the greenies in DC realized California just might decide to allow drilling...
- bjs3171, on 02/14/2009, -2/+5uh...he's been against this drilling the entire campaign.
- Eiknujrac, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3@mastermite:
"And even then, they add, the amount of new oil produced would probably be too small to significantly affect world oil prices." - bilbus, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3no, we should just hope for a renewable source that does not suck .. and just not use power until then. Thats the only smart thing to do.
If it take a 100 years .. we will just need to start using horses and carts until then. -
