- SeldonPsych, on 12/06/2007, -0/+11mount toba, which erupted 70,000 years ago, almost killed off the human species. there may have only been 2,000 survivors worldwide.

- rootsthatruin, on 12/06/2007, -1/+5I'm sure some do, because some Christian sects in the past put forth the idea that the earth was created only a few thousand years ago. Obviously, things of this nature defy that idea.
- scooper86, on 12/06/2007, -1/+5obviously not, they smite the unbelievers
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -3/+6Amazing the changes that have happened to the earth. And now we have ignorant politically minded people such as the Goreacle and his followers claiming that if the planet continues to change it will be destroyed.
Nice post. Hopefully it'll open some eyes. - SeldonPsych, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theo ...
- thebaron2, on 12/06/2007, -1/+3There isn't a "positive" or "negative" evolution - just as things aren't "more" or "less" evolved. It's just adaptation to environment. Humans aren't "more" evolved than the great apes, we just evolved down a different path and are suited for different environments.
If temperatures increase over the long-term, then species will adapt one way or another. That may mean more/less fur depending on geography or a number of other changes, but it won't be "negative" evolution.
Although I suppose that ALL evolution can be considered negative from the POV of the animals that failed to adapt. In its most basic sense, though, evolution doesn't have an end goal or anything like that. - drakenlot, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2Please leave your spam outside when entering. And wipe your feet.
- Torx, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2LOLCANO!
- drakenlot, on 12/06/2007, -1/+2It was Cthulu, duh.
- drakenlot, on 12/06/2007, -1/+2Volcanoes are the symbol of Satan and sin, so they're on the fence.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1this was actually just a response to the absolute zaniness of the comments page from the previous post in the series, in which a raging debate occured over the origins of earth. I don't care what people believe, i was just wondering if this would cause the same level of rancor that the mention of the big bang did.
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -3/+4I hope this comment page gets as crazy as the last one. Do creationists hate volcanoes?
- drakenlot, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1That's so good it really does deserve double posting.
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -1/+2I don't know if you've noticed, but much of our agriculture depends on warmth. Food doesn't grow in the cold as evidenced by the starvation that occurred in Europe during the Little Ice Age that the earth (relatively) recently emerged from.
Talk about global cooling and I'll be very concerned. Until then, pass me the oranges. - EmperorAwesome, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1No, criticism is not bashing. This being digg and all however, I mean - come on. Don't tell me you haven't seen the result of Christianity being brought up. And no, it's not all religions. The irony of the demographic on here lies in their politically correct stance on other religions. In addition, you seem to assume I'm a young earth creationist who hates science or whatever stereotypes this site's majority userbase is cooking up nowadays.
- skews13, on 12/06/2007, -0/+0it does kind of make you think about how natural events such as volcanic eruption, meteore impacts, etc.,is likely the percurser of most religious dogma.
- OneHine, on 12/06/2007, -1/+1Sorry, but criticism is not "bashing". You have the freedom to believe that the Earth is 6000 years old, that dinosaurs and humans lived together, and that a magic man sent a magic flood to kill off almost all humanity (and that this act of genocide was done by a perfectly good being). And we are free to point out how your story lacks credibility. In other words, freedom of speech applies to non-fundamentalists as well.
If creationists don't like being taken to task for their ignorance, they need to either learn something before commenting, or stop commenting altogether. - EmperorAwesome, on 12/06/2007, -1/+1Wow. When I clicked on this headline, I had no idea I'd see any level of religious debate, or more accurately, antitheists bashing Christians, but here it is. Comment one. You fail at life.
- dengar69, on 12/06/2007, -1/+1"Jesus came before the volcanos."
- drakenlot, on 12/06/2007, -3/+3Well, I really think if the world does continue changing due to our actions, it'll crash.
Don't you know that anything we mess with, breaks?
Odd question, but wouldn't global warming sort of show evolution in action, but the negative side of it? - gak001, on 12/06/2007, -1/+1Actually, this article doesn't seem to contradict a lot of apologist theories.
- antechinus, on 12/06/2007, -2/+2All very nice but like so many blogs it is for folks with the IQ of a bunny rabbit.
- OneHine, on 12/06/2007, -2/+1No one's claiming that the Earth itself is going to be destroyed. Your dishonest strawman is rather unimpressive. In fact, it rather reminds of a creationist construction, it bears so little resemblance to reality. Guess evolution denialists aren't so different from other denialists after all.
What global warming can do though, is make life on Earth more challenging as conditions change. I don't know if you've noticed, but much of our economy depends on climate (notably agriculture). - inghamb87, on 12/06/2007, -3/+2Nope creationists love volcanos. They represent hell on earth!
