- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -12/+52Finally, a front page article that does not mention Sarah Palin.
- kingofinternet, on 09/01/2008, -3/+27you just ruined it *****
- Peko, on 09/01/2008, -0/+19I am personally astonished and astounded that the Japanese came up with the idea of combining several smaller mechanical thingies into one large super mechanical thingie to save the planet from destruction.
- Peko, on 09/01/2008, -0/+14I am not an expert - but
1) If the Japanese Floaty Thingies are far enough out, tsunamis aren't much of a concern. The tsunamis are only super dragon big probrem near shore.
2) Sounds like the platforms will be honkin big. Combined with #1 above - they might have enough size that they aren't particularly vulnerable to tsunamis, typhoons.
But I aint an expert. So I could be wrong. - solidcube, on 09/01/2008, -3/+13Well, this should be good for the environment. Maybe they can double as whale-processing platforms?
- archiecstll, on 09/01/2008, -0/+8Link works plenty! Now Zelda on the other hand...
- Joab, on 09/01/2008, -0/+6Great game man. Not alot on people on digg will understand the reference though. In AC was a civi type game where you could have power generators and farms on the ocean.
- poet, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5The displacement of water columns that occurs during a tsunami doesn't affect the ocean except directly on the shore--a minuscule amount; it affects the elevating land which causes the displaced water column to rise. I thought this was common knowledge.
- Peko, on 09/01/2008, -0/+4Look out Mr. Bubbles!
- mfc5200, on 09/01/2008, -1/+5Its not a one size fits all solution buddy.
Oil has been the lifeblood of the global economy for the past century, believing that the world (and particularly the US) could just go without it would be naive. There is inevitably going to be a transition (and in our case, a very painful transition, due to our reliance on the stuff) away from oil in the next few decades. As such, we should be drilling as much as possible to make the transition as non-painful as possible. I think people tend to underestimate how important oil is to their daily lives. (fertilizers for food, fuel for transport, plastics for everyday consumption, heating oil for warmth, asphalt, etc)
Also, the US currently has the fasting growing wind and solar industries in the world. So its not like we are sitting back and doing nothing. There will be a transition of course, and it will be a very difficult transition, therefore we should maximize the amount of oil we have to make it as easy as possible (a relative term, it will be painful regardless) - logicet, on 09/01/2008, -0/+4Alaska is close to Japan!
- sanman, on 09/01/2008, -1/+5first come colonies
then come mobile suits - cparsons, on 09/01/2008, -4/+7Alpha Centauri anyone?
- neocr0n, on 09/01/2008, -0/+3Takeshi's Castle and now this? Man Japan rules.
- kingofinternet, on 09/01/2008, -1/+4dude, i bet they'll have the best sushi on those eco-rigs.
- AlphaBiggs, on 09/01/2008, -1/+4I hope they have enough minerals...
- mshea093, on 09/01/2008, -1/+3Attack plan, when going after Japan, just hit their pylons- it will render their defenses useless...
Hmmmm - OpCzar, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2Wow, this is the first I notice someone correctly using the word affect instead of effect on digg.
- poet, on 09/01/2008, -1/+3You require more vespene gas.
- hendrixiloveyou, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2it was one of the best games ever made!
but will they ever build floating towns/cities? - Cibeles, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately, the only type of energy nowadays capable of replacing oil is nuclear. Solar and wind are unreliable and you can't predict how much electricity you have, only how much you need. Wave energy, energy generated by the movements of the ocean, is reliable all day long, you know what you have and you know how much you need. But you have the problem of being in much early development than both solar and wind and the ocean being quite "aggressive" with the materials involved. Also solar and wind have the problem of storing energy for those moments you don't have sun or wind.
In short technology isn't as developed as needed to replace oil and if people continue consuming you need to increase production, in this case for americans, off-shore drilling. Off-shore drilling will sort out the problem in the short term but will do nothing in the long term. - handheldchimp, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2Buried you for bringing her up...
- wunksta, on 09/01/2008, -0/+2works.
- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1And the Japanese aren't capable? They're describing what the Japanese are up to with this technology, and crediting no-one, because the Japanese intend to mass produce these, subsequently they get all the attention, and rightly so.
- TopherT, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1I support as much drilling as possible, I just resent McCain treating off shore oil like some kind of panacea for our energy problems. We must, as you say, transition. Our wind energy may well subside if our legislated subsidies go by the wayside as they are now looking to. While our growth in these industries is high, our legislative agenda is not augmenting or systematizing the transition. Maybe the private sector will be able to handle this one their own, but private industry doesn't exactly have a great history with electrical infrastructure or any large scale infrastructure problems. What I'm really looking for is an explanation from a scientific perspective of our precarious situation that actually is carried to the general public. Jimmy Carter tried to do it, and it cost him an election. We vote for candy and ignore the vegetables. Both Barrack and McCain are selling us candy, I hope that whoever wins the election recognizes that we're on the edge of a diabetic coma before its too late.
- TVarmy, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1Maybe they should sink these things. And work on biotech inside them.
- smittyme, on 09/01/2008, -3/+4Isn't Japan susceptible to tsunami's? I wonder how these eco-rigs will hold up when there is a sudden decrease/increase in water elevation?
- epadafunk, on 09/01/2008, -9/+10Dugg for not being about Sarah Palin.
- worldnick, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1I'm usually for nuclear energy, but not floating on liquid that circulates the earth and supports the entire planet.
- hokie15102, on 09/01/2008, -2/+3Been there. It's an awesome country with amazing people. I am sure it will be perfect like just about everything else they do anymore.
- DJCult, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1We can beat them. We just need the Core commander to make some more construction aircrafts, then we can nanolathe and capture all the generators.
- poet, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1Official WTFery.
- OpCzar, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1FTA: "The rigs will be unmanned and comprise several hexagonal platforms."
After reading this (and realizing it's of japanese origin), I immediately associated with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty:
"Shortly after the tanker incident, a gigantic off-shore clean up facility known as the Big Shell, was built in order to clean up the mass-amount of oil that had been left from the sinking of the Discovery. The Big Shell itself has become a landmark, a symbol of environmental protection. The Big Shell was shaped like two hexagons connected end-on-end." - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1Fish, and plankton, and sea greens, and protein from the sea. It's all here. Ready! - Paranoidmarvin, on 09/01/2008, -1/+1Who?
- samimnot, on 09/01/2008, -2/+2All these other countries are finding innovative ways to increase their power supply, while replacing their oil consumption. And what does our President suggest?
Ohhhhh yeah ;-) drilling off shore, as opposed to just drilling on land. - bigbangbuddha, on 09/01/2008, -1/+1I'll take 2

- garysaiken, on 09/01/2008, -2/+1Please, when talking about power, "300 megawatts" will do. I could get 300 megawatt-hours from a bicycle generator if I run it long enough.
