- Bullislander05, on 04/21/2009, -0/+34BREAKING: According to a new EPA regulation, hurricanes are now banned.
- Chak2007, on 04/21/2009, -0/+31Breaking: Scientists have no idea whats really going to happen
- amabaie, on 04/21/2009, -3/+28...which is why it is pretty dangerous to try to counteract global warming by seeding the atmosphere. Everything is just far too connected, and who knows what damage we could do to our collective life-support system.
- Khast, on 04/21/2009, -0/+19Great, so now Global Warming causes Global Warming?
- directedition, on 04/21/2009, -1/+16Just as an aside, I think I should end every sentence with "possibly feeding global warming."
"We can't have karaoke night on Wednesday. If we do that, we'll miss Lost, possibly feeding global warming." - chinaman1212, on 04/21/2009, -5/+16Better call Al on the green phone.
- firesights, on 04/21/2009, -0/+11Your apostrophes need a hurricane to shoot them a little higher on your next comment.
- masamunecyrus, on 04/21/2009, -0/+10Every year since Katrina it's been "SUPER MEGA GOD HURRICANES TO DESTROY MANKIND!!!" and, in fact, the years after Katrina have been some of the ~lamest~ hurricane seasons on record.
If people would just listen to the hurricane experts, and not the "climate" experts, they'd realize that it's all a bunch of baseless hype. - shadeOfGrey, on 04/21/2009, -0/+9Oh no! Not water ice!
- inactive, on 04/21/2009, -0/+10Do not feed the global warmings.
- Lazydriver, on 04/21/2009, -1/+10Water, while being the most common greenhouse gas on Earth, has that unusual property of evaporation. When it evaporates from water (from ice), it produces clouds. Clouds block and reflect the sunlight out into space, while keeping current heat in.
I don't hate environmentalism, but the Earth's had more extreme temperature changes in the past. We'll be fine. There are more pressing environmental concerns then global warming. I mean, only 20000 years ago, we had a damn ice age stretching to Spain! - halonumber14, on 04/21/2009, -0/+9in that blurb alone.. "global warming" or "climate change" 4 times.
with all the other green and other anthropogenic warming propaganda, what else is this crap? are the storms being blamed for change, or is the human-driven worldwide temperature variations changing storms?
anyone heard of the sun going through different output cycles? - moirende, on 04/21/2009, -4/+11Okay, for starters, there is NO EVIDENCE that global warming has anything at all to do with the severity of hurricanes. There has never been a study that demonstrates any such connection. Secondly, if anything global warming would be more likely to *decrease* the severity of hurricanes. Why is that? Because one of the drivers of hurricane strength is the differential of cooler northern temperatures meeting warmer equatorial temperatures. Given that global warming would actually work to even out this differential, this would serve to make hurricanes *less* severe, not more so.
The Global Warming True Believers are now resorting to out and out lying to scare monger us into buying their idiocy. How nice. - novenator, on 04/21/2009, -1/+8awesome. I love science.
- maz2331, on 04/21/2009, -2/+8...that more study is needed.
We talked about cooling in the 1970s, cooling in the1990s, and now we don't know what is happening. But we do need a billion dollars a year to figure it out. - OriginalLucid1, on 04/21/2009, -2/+8But that doesn't stop them from fear mongering. Easier to separate you from your money that way, see?
- OriginalLucid1, on 04/21/2009, -4/+10"Scientists now believe that global warming is likely to increase severity of tropical cyclones"
Didn't the Goracle try this little trick after Katrina? That didn't work, why are they trying to make it work now?
Say it with me: "Man made "Global Warming" is the greatest hoax ever hoisted on mankind." - SirCharge, on 04/21/2009, -1/+6If it is true that global warming causes cyclones and cyclones cause global warming then the logical conclusion is that the world should never have recovered from its last warming period.
- OriginalLucid1, on 04/21/2009, -1/+6And you Sir, have it figured out. $$$$$
- twiztidsinz, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4BAN HURRICANES!!!
- offrdbandit, on 04/21/2009, -0/+5"but I have noticed an increase in cyclones altogether"
No you haven't. - slvrbullet87, on 04/21/2009, -1/+6panic causes panic, which causes more panic
- kdmkdmkdm, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4UH, you don't understand what it's like working with actors. THAT'S WHAT THAT IS.
- copypastry, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4Who would've thought?
I guess this means I'll have to stop running my hurricane all day long. - inactive, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4Let's send all the Hurricanes to Gitmo.
- inactive, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3It's all about fear. Fear is a compelling emotion, makes us watch the television and the accompanying ads. Also, makes us change behavior. Perhaps AGW is false, but could the ends justify the means? The ends being less pollution.
- lowsh, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3In related news: Thunderstorms produce electricity lightning
- offrdbandit, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Hurricanes are very susceptible to atmospheric conditions. I remember reading something a while back about increased atmospheric temperatures hampering the convection that drives hurricane winds.
- ultralights, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3cyclones numbers in the past 2 yrs have been the lowest in 30 yrs. in Oz. just check out the BOM website.
- twiztidsinz, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3@bbgore: Like volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes?
- ethana2, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Oh, that's nothing. They think this may be occuring with frozen dihidrogen monoxide too!
- elbm, on 04/21/2009, -3/+5Scientists now believe.....
- danielttt, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2Almost as illogical as the simpletons who claim humans are solely responsible for climate change when there's so many other things at play.
- zuiquan, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1We need to kill hurricanes. DARPA, get on this ***** ASAP!
- OriginalLucid1, on 04/21/2009, -2/+4He said he was eating and he'll get back to you later.
- inactive, on 04/21/2009, -1/+3Only change we can believe in.
- firesights, on 04/21/2009, -2/+4What are you talking about? Hurricanes are a cause of the Coriolis effect combined with extremely warm ocean temperatures. It's not like tornado alley where warm air and cold air meet to form thunderstorms.
I'm not a person that really buys into global warming, but cold water impedes hurricanes, it does not aid them. - starmanfalls, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2Welcome to the war on weather. War on mother nature would not be nice
- whiskeythief, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2I love science too, but this isn't science.
FTA (emphasis mine): "POSSIBLY feeding global warming'
"opens up the POSSIBILITY that these storms could affect global climate"
"Scientists are currently UNSURE why this increase has occurred"
"It is ... WIDELY BELIEVED that global warming will lead to changes in the frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones"
"results presented here establish the POSSIBILITY for a feedback between tropical cyclones and global climate"
This is pure speculation. It is widely believed and a possibility that I might fart a dixie land duet with a trombone. - WeHealthy, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2This derives from an article in Time Magazine. It really lacked sources and credibility.
- danielttt, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2It's because these leftists are more interested in controling the masses than they are in controling the global climate.
- moirende, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2Give me ONE study that showed global warming makes hurricanes worse. Oh, wait, you can't. Why? Because such a study doesn't exist. But *I'm* the one making up BS. How convenient.
- Khast, on 04/21/2009, -1/+3Hmm, I like yours better. :) Chaos is always good in my books. (Well, in small amounts, there has to be order, before there can be chaos.)
Too bad I am not going to be around for the Y3K panic, I have a feeling it is going to be bigger than the Y2K one! - gfryesc, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2I'd think this 10 year cycle of cooling that we're in now would kill all these green stories I keep seeing. I guess people would rather believe their television than their own eyes year after year.
- NotYourProdigy, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2I meant to say the Arctic. That's also in the link you sent me. And that single story you linked, explains that the Antarctic is growing "temporarily", while the Arctic is at record lows.
- fury420, on 04/21/2009, -1/+3no, it looks pretty clearly like a discovery "that tropical cyclones are responsible for many of the clouds in the stratosphere" and that "opens up the possibility that these storms could affect global climate"
oh, and heres your quoted phrases including the parts where the ambiguity is clearly noted
"possibly feeding global warming"
"Many scientists now believe that global warming..."
"Widely believed that global warming will..."
"could drive climate change"
"possibility of climate change"
this article makes no definitive statement about "global warming" - inactive, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2Everyone notices increases in weather related events. Even though their lives are comparable to the blink of an eye, relative to geologic time.
- quirkopatra, on 04/21/2009, -0/+1Sh. They can read this. Don't let them know we know.
Go recycle some plastic.
$$$$$$ = power - masamunecyrus, on 04/22/2009, -0/+1http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pdf/05pielke.pdf
To summarize, claims of linkages between global warming and hurricane impacts are premature for three reasons. First, no connection has been established between greenhouse gas emissions and the observed behavior of hurricanes
Second, the peer-reviewed literature reflects that a scientific consensus exists that any future changes in hurricane intensities will likely be small in the context of observed variability
And third, under the assumptions of the IPCC, expected future damages to society of its projected changes in the behavior of hurricanes are dwarfed by the influence of its own projections of growing wealth and population
