- kukuberra, on 10/30/2007, -5/+93it doesn't matter the reason why, the world environment is changing and we are doing nothing. But the point is this is science not politics, it's tested over and over and over and it has saved us before. Medicine was disbelieved at first, people scoffed at the idea of germs but guess what science lead to healthier people, happier lives.
I suspect the adaptable human will survive even if we can't figure out how to change the environment but I doubt there will be much civilization left.
Why does it piss so many people off to think green? Like it's evil? IT CAN ONLY HELP! - DontGiveADamn, on 10/31/2007, -16/+75Ha ha. I'm old so I won't be around to see the effects. You young guys are screwed.
- Ajajadude, on 10/30/2007, -2/+59Just for that, I hope you live forever!
- mrbubbleboy, on 10/29/2007, -23/+67Dugg. Open your eyes scamerica.
- ICSU, on 10/30/2007, -1/+36"The planet is fine. The people are *****." - George Carlin
- dansvan, on 10/29/2007, -1/+26What the hell is it going to take for people to listen? Even if global warming is a controversial issue, what the hell is so wrong by reducing your impact on the environment? Walk to work, carpool with friends, buy a hybrid, create a vacuum to suck the ***** out of the air, it doesn't matter! History has shown that the littlest things can add up to the biggest outcomes.
- vade79, on 10/29/2007, -2/+23Well, somehow the right/republicans used it as a political issue. "Democrats support this? it must be wrong!", then for people it's like rooting for a football team (your political party) over the earth (everyone). Being wrong is worth the risk to me.
- dasunst3r, on 10/29/2007, -2/+21I think the best way to be "green" is just to live a life where you buy only the stuff you need, a little bit of the stuff you want, reuse stuff you can reuse, and pay no heed to those materialistic celebrities.
- inactive, on 10/28/2007, -6/+25I thought the whole right-wing-global-warming-denier FUD that other planets were also warming wa debunked some time ago, but I see there are still some morons who buy into it in a desperate attempt to feel better about their own share of responsibility.
- alfredomancho, on 10/29/2007, -4/+21Is this a surprise? Just knowing the trillions of dollars spent worldwide on military advancement, a.k.a. FINDING THE MOST EFFICIENT WAYS TO KILL EACH OTHER, is enough to conclude humanity is destined for doom and it's only a matter of time.
- MLisa, on 10/29/2007, -3/+20You buried this? -or- have you buried your head in the sand? This article is talking about a variety of the world's problems: over-fishing, lack of safe fresh water, agriculture needs, over population, pollution. do you think the Earth is going to heal itself?
- Ajajadude, on 10/28/2007, -10/+25My stove is heating up, global warming is fiction!
What the hell are you talking about? - prince87x, on 10/29/2007, -2/+17Great idea... lets just ignore all of our problems and hope they go away instead of trying to solve them.
- jguy584, on 10/28/2007, -1/+15No one does anything until bodies hit the ground.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -2/+16FACT saying random ***** after the word "fact" capitalized can be posted all day long but without proper scientific citations, no one is going to believe a word of that *****
- krnldmp, on 10/28/2007, -1/+15This is a complicated argument. For the most part the good stuff is more costly because:
The good ***** ain't cheap to produce.
There's a smaller market for it.
You're only partly right. Change is SLOW in this world and some people will fight it to their death. They LIKE their cheap *****, even if it's killing them. - johnnynack, on 10/28/2007, -5/+19@ dontgiveadamn Ha ha your old so you'll die soon!
I read through the biodiversity part and its pretty good. However It doesn't point enough fingers at those responsible for the decrease in biodiversity. - spyd3rweb, on 10/29/2007, -4/+18A carbon tax isnt going to stop anything, and carbon restrictions are only going to hurt 3rd world developing nations. And using corn as fuel is going to make people starve.
- animusart, on 10/29/2007, -11/+25I think the reason people get pissed off isn't AT the idea of being green, it's because capitalists like to charge higher prices for things that are good and healthy. Take natural/organic foods for example... they require less work than processed foods yet cost twice as much. It's the "cool" factor.
I would most certainly like to be more "green" but unfortunately I can't afford it all the time. It's the capitalists that are unhealthy, not the people. If the healthier stuff cost less, I'm sure more people would happily purchase and consume it. - mozzep, on 10/29/2007, -2/+15Reason is slave to our passions. Humans are renowned for their ability to neglect their long term interests, and reason, for favor of their short-term desires or passions.
- spyd3rweb, on 10/28/2007, -0/+12Not paying attention to worthless celebrities is a good idea period.
- stoanhart, on 10/28/2007, -1/+11yeah, you can sign all the DNR's you want, we're not pulling the plug until the ice age starts!
- inactive, on 10/28/2007, -1/+10Well, you're part of "capitalist" by putting pric first.. Sadly, bio/ such food has its price to produce, and it's higher than that of chemi-food. We use a ridiculously low % of our income on food, we shoul be qble to buy more bio. Only that will make it cheaper. Buying local is also good. Think of it as a political vote..
- Identity4, on 10/30/2007, -5/+14Yeah! ***** my kids, and my kid's kids!! I want my ***** H2 and my coal powered electricity, and i want my halliburton stocks to go up. Why the ***** should i Give a crap about anybody else? me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me
- rusty0101, on 10/29/2007, -1/+9Spanish Flu - 1 virus stopped WW1 - not a lot of things that function at a level smaller than a virus. Most Nanobots are going to require more information. The virus so depopulated the people in the countries at war, as well as having a 90% or higher mortality rate in some areas, that it was not economically feasible to continue the war.
The Plague or Black Death killed off what percentage of the population of Europe over the centuries it was active? Possibly the result of a volcanic eruption adding a lot of dust to the atmosphere reducing the amount of light reaching the surface of the planet. Not sure whether it is better to call this a large effect on humanity due to a small bug, or a large volcanic eruption. In either case it was an environmental situation affecting humans as a whole.
Loosing knowledge has also had an effect that seems to be out of proportion to it's initial value. We no longer know how to work Bronze the way it was done in the Bronze Age. If we did, we very likely would have a variety of tools that would improve safety significantly. Damascus Steel is a forgotten art. Granted there are some variations that have been developed since then, but the results are not quite the same. Calculus may have been an invention of Newton and Liebnitz separately, but Aristotle apparently had figured it out nearly 2000 years earlier.
What are the effects over the long term of the small act of organizing the known elements into a table by their apparent weight?
Electrons and photons are likely to have brought you this information. Our current technology uses a tremendous number of each to pass that information, but the actual particles are rather small. Their mass is such that we can sense their rotation about the atoms they are involved with as a magnetic field that is retained over time frames we measure with calendars rather than stopwatches.
A single decision can destroy nearly all life as we know it. And that is only one of a couple of dozen disaster situations that are being discussed regularly. (It's also one of the least discussed in the public eye, Though there are people who are trying to keep that knowledge in the public eye.) - KraftDinner101, on 10/29/2007, -9/+16It's lazy ***** like you who did this *****. I hope you die tomorrow. Seriously.
- XZanatos, on 10/30/2007, -3/+10RTFA you douche. ONLY 1 paragraph of the article is about CO2, the REST of the article is about EVERYTHING ELSE. I wish CO2 and global warming was the only problem we had to worry about. Essentially every system of the entire earth is threatened by the weight of humanity, quit using CO2 as a diversion from looking at all the problems we face.
- krnldmp, on 10/28/2007, -2/+9Humanity will outlast the current militarism. This is just an embarrassing little blip in time.
- bjornski, on 10/29/2007, -2/+8They're not lazy, they just didn't want to lose a precious cent or change their consumption patterns.
What? Inconvenience me? It might cost me money, or all life on earth!
Screw that! I want my SUV! - darlyn, on 10/28/2007, -1/+76 billion ... dude, that's, like, the whole world!!!11!1
- nblsavage, on 10/29/2007, -3/+9thanks Mr. Science. Where did you get your degree from again?
- daizaru, on 10/28/2007, -2/+7You sir have no idea how difficult organic farming is or how you have to charge more to still make a living because your crop is so much smaller.
- mozzep, on 10/28/2007, -2/+6Rather than commit the blatant and popular Ad Hominem fallacy, do you have any reservations about what I've said? If so, please voice them.
- BowieX, on 10/28/2007, -3/+7In the form of a six-word story, here at least is America's eventual solution to the environmental crisis:
Indoors: Intravenous food, obesity, "Second Life." - mclewell, on 10/28/2007, -2/+6you are a complete douche. It's people like you that are compounding this problem. I don't care how old you are, grow up and open your eyes.
- ProgressBar, on 10/28/2007, -1/+5A little "blip" has nearly nuked the world a few times in recent history.
- cjhowe, on 10/28/2007, -0/+4If it's such a problem (and I'm not saying that it is not), why are you waiting for government to do it for you. Take personal responsibility. Responsibility for yourself, for your family, for your community, for your planet.
- OneLess, on 10/28/2007, -2/+5You idiots! CO2 doesn't cause global warming! Venus is 500 degrees C because of magic unicorns!
- vade79, on 10/29/2007, -0/+3There are very few things that need to be controlled by the government, IMO this is one of them. You have departments of Government to deal with disasters, this would be the biggest one, if correct. You need everyone on board and you can't get that by "talking it to death", which is what is happening.
- requiemtower, on 10/29/2007, -2/+5Please elaborate. What do you disagree with the GEO-4 report?
- nblsavage, on 10/29/2007, -6/+9I consider you no different from the 9/11 truther nuts.
- rusty0101, on 10/28/2007, -0/+3While it's not universal, a lot of aluminum is made next to hydroelectric plants which are not emitting greenhouse gases. It still takes a lot of electricity, however recycling aluminum reduces the overall demand on the system as well.
- angryredplanet, on 10/28/2007, -1/+4True, but most of those "other reasons" are exacerbated by higher levels of CO2. That's the common theme.
- Crisender111, on 10/30/2007, -5/+7WHAT SORT OF ***** IDIOT ARE YOU? THE BUSH SORT?
Oh well, let me rephrase that. Did you have an education? Did you have ANY education? - myalibi, on 10/29/2007, -2/+4there is no death, its 2008 already, get with it DIGGERS.
- lead2thehead, on 10/29/2007, -1/+3If the UN wasn't trying to make everyone pay them a "Global Carbon Tax" I'd be less skeptical of their findings. For now, it would appear that they have a vested interest in making everyone think that the sky is falling because then, they can extort money out of us to "fix" it.
- ZenMojo, on 10/29/2007, -3/+5We are quite the self-destructive little apes, aren't we?
- yawnstretch, on 10/28/2007, -1/+3I personally think we should be investing more money and time into space travel so we're not stuck here waiting to die. Sooner or later something will go seriously wrong with the planet - maybe caused by us, maybe not - it's irrelevant.
The point is we cant control the safety of the planet eternally.
Let's spread -
