- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -7/+711) You guys are really setting this guy up for a fall. No human being could possibly do all the things you're expecting him to do.
2) Where is the MONEY coming from for all this magic wand waving? We're in an economic crisis, remember? - MCA2142, on 11/05/2008, -3/+34It's not easy becoming green.
- Samsong, on 11/06/2008, -1/+29We take it from the rich people! No matter that the top ~6% of the population pays 50% of the taxes...
- 0260, on 11/06/2008, -2/+23Let the money throwing at problems begin
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -8/+25screw digg. i never knew it was made up of a bunch of poor ***** trying to bitch their way through life. go work and stop taking money from those that worked hard to get it.
- vsujohn2, on 11/06/2008, -5/+21Spreading the "green" around. Sweet!
- vsujohn2, on 11/06/2008, -6/+17I WOOT in your general direction.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -3/+14If we can send ***** to mars, we can find ways to produce less CO2.
- TheMachine1, on 11/06/2008, -3/+13"Do you understand that all these wonderful-sounding green initiatives cost money?"
Yeah agreed there is no free lunch. But take fluorescent lights vs incandescent lights, a fluorescent light cost more but it uses much less energy and last much longer. If you have access to cheap capital the fluorescent light is the best investment. Government has cheap capital it barrows at the lowest rate. Programs with tangibles benefits will be good investments. - SemiSarcastic, on 11/06/2008, -8/+18John Madden: NOW YOU SEE HERE DIGG LIKES OBAMA I MEAN LOOK AT THESE ARTICLES BEING POSTED ABOUT HIM IT'S CRAZY!! I-I-I MEAN YOU GO ONE OVER HERE (circles once) ANOTHER OVER HERE (circles three times) A 'YES WE CAN!' COMMENT OVER HERE AND THEN YOU GOT ANOTHER RIGHT OVER HERE (circles seven)! AND WHEN YOU SEE THESE OBAMA ARTICLES YOU KNOW THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE...BECAUSE YOU KNOW BARRACK OBAMA IS ON THEM AND HE'S R-R-RIGHT HERE AND PEOPLE ARE DIGGING IT! SO YOU GOT ARTICLES ABOUT OBAMA WITH BARRACK OBAMA ON THEM AND PEOPLE ARE DIGGING THEM! AND THAT'S THE RUN DOWN...BOOM!
- travel2write, on 11/06/2008, -7/+16Now that the elections are over and there will be a Obama presidency, have a look at this indepth summary of what a green Obama presidency will look like. Sounds promising. Let's just hope he can fulfil his promises and make the world and the planet a better place.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -1/+10The debates unnerved both candidates. When he was preparing for them during the Democratic primaries, Obama was recorded saying, "I don't consider this to be a good format for me, which makes me more cautious. I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, 'You know, this is a stupid question, but let me … answer it.' So when Brian Williams is asking me about what's a personal thing that you've done [that's green], and I say, you know, 'Well, I planted a bunch of trees.' And he says, 'I'm talking about personal.' What I'm thinking in my head is, 'Well, the truth is, Brian, we can't solve global warming because I f---ing changed light bulbs in my house. It's because of something collective'."
http://www.newsweek.com/id/167581/page/2 - Zandarrr, on 11/06/2008, -3/+11Garbage! Obama supports the use of "clean" coal, nuclear energy, and biodiesel. None of those are clean, efficient energy sources. "Clean" coal is extremely toxic and produces staggering amounts of CO2, the very thing we're trying to reduce, remember? Nuclear is dangerous and it produces CFC gases. And then there's the biodiesel... The biggest joke of them all. Biodiesel fuels need more energy in the production stage than they give off in their final product.
Everyone needs to stop believing that Obama is magically going to fix everything and do it right. If want the change we've been chanting bout, we need to get together and make the change ourselves. Have our government support us, not the other way around. I believe that Obama will listen but we need to give him something to listen too. - inactive, on 11/06/2008, -1/+9Unless you're the hulk
- suxmonkey, on 11/06/2008, -7/+14Green in the long term will save us money. Period. Or are you on the 'Drill Baby Drill' team? :P
- mcsenget, on 11/06/2008, -2/+8The government should not support any companies.
Let them sort out their own business. - inactive, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6Where do I line up for my Vodka and Bread rations?

/sorry - jakerudy7, on 11/06/2008, -3/+9Now that's the kind of change I'm looking for.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -2/+8A free pass huh? Is digg part of the "zionist" conspiracy or just the regular ol' "NWO"?
Yes... All these mysterious "outrageously stupid and bigoted and downright offensive things" and yet no one can ever point to a single one.
Clearly, it's the "free pass" :)
Watch out HumanCattle, I might just use my superhuman like powers of persuasion on you when you least expect it! - COINTELPROAgent, on 11/06/2008, -2/+8@JIDF - "Obviously, you have a free pass from digg"
Great! You've finally realized that Digg doesn't want you here. I'll be looking forward to not seeing you around. - minoss, on 11/06/2008, -1/+7I was just surprised that both candidates were expecting to be re-elected 10 times.
- SchmuckofNI, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6Correction, he is going to borrow yet more money from the Federal Reserve to which every single American is going to have to pay interest on!
- minoss, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6Or you can give it back to the people you took it from in the first place and they could think of all the great stuff they would buy with it (like spending it on house payments).
- spider-man, on 11/06/2008, -1/+7Time to get real. Obama is a politician. He is not going to be all that different from any of the others. Tons of promise with few real results. Even just before the election he was trying to lower expectations...
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and ...
but since you all are rabid liberals, you'll be in denial in four years and still vote for him. I just don't get how people get so excited about politicians and put so much faith in them. Pretty much they are all the same up and down the aisle. Full of flowery words and platitudes but vapid in results. Oh there is one change you can count on coming. That's the change in your paycheck. Hey you know that the money to pay for all of those new wonderful Government programs will have to come from somewhere. Don't worry though we know what a fantastic track record the government has for efficiently spending the money they confiscate from you for their little experiments. - wrestlingnrj, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5Wow someone I almost completely agree with on digg for once.
- KMye, on 11/06/2008, -1/+6"Overall, Obama's campaign pledge was to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050 - a striking contrast to McCain's 60% below 1990 levels by the same date."
80% of current(ish) gas emissions: 0.2*~5800 MMT = 1160
60% of 1990's levels: 0.4*~5000 MMT = 2000 MMT 2000
Striking? Really? - leprasmurf, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5all the college towns are the ones that voted for Obama eh? Like Orland, Tampa, and Miami? You consider those "College towns"? What about Jacksonville, that has a couple colleges, and yet McCain won there? The fact is, "drill baby drill" is the motto of a mindset that will inevitably fail and cause untold amounts of damage to our environment. Our generation has to pay a little more for clean energy. If we're no longer in a war that costs millions each day, then I think we will have an easier time of affording it. Not to mention if Obama finds a plan that costs around or less than current power expansion plans, overall it won't cost any more than what we're paying now. Google has released such a plan, and other think tanks are constantly working on such plans.
I am in college, but I work full time and support my family of 4. I still vehemently support Obama over McCain.
FL voting breakdown: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/state/#FL - ImYourRealDad, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5TOUGH ACTIN' TINACTIN!
- MrFunStuff, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5He is sending more troops to Afghanistan. The constitution say you can't start a war with out a declaration of war.
Obama continuing Bush's war on terror and that's an illegal war. - u8eR, on 11/06/2008, -3/+7Good to hear, I just hope he doesn't rely too much on the "clean" coal hype. There is no such thing as clean coal.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -8/+12"Oh, and for all you Obama supporters who are college types and those still living in their parents' basement, April 15 is tax day. Amazing how having a job and paying taxes changes a person's political ideology."
...and yet the majority of upper income (250,000+ per year) voted for Obama.
Kind of makes you look like an ass, huh? - TSK05, on 11/06/2008, -1/+5"Enlarging the government via social programs is not the same as taking away our civil liberties."
I always thought the more power you give to an entity, the more ability it has to abuse that power. Are you going to argue that a smaller government has a bigger ability to take away civil liberties than a larger government?
"The GOP clearly wants to make us a police state and control the people with an iron fist, and they did a lot in the past 8 years towards that end"
Bush didn't believe in. Bush has a 20% approval rating. There are a hell of a lot more Republicans than 20%. More like 50%. As you can see, the majority of Republicans DO NOT approve of a larger government. But while Bush may have done it, it wasn't just Republicans who allowed him to. We were all scared, including liberals, and that's what got the patriot act passed. - sulthernao, on 11/06/2008, -2/+6What about marginal propensity to spend? A progressive tax is the best answer (unless you have some other proposal).
- fluxion, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4indeed. "drill baby, drill" is a 50-100 year short-term bail-out. eventually we're gonna get ***** and someone is gonna have to start paying for the transitioning to alternative energy. yes it costs money, i'll gladly pay it. everyone else might be okay with letting their kids deal with that mess, but im for starting the process now, gradually and steadily.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -4/+8Oh HumanCattle, you and your "baiting".
You see, this "you baited them into being racist!" is funny in two ways:
1) By claiming that I somehow "lured" your friends into saying something racist or stupid, you are implying that they had the intellect of a herd animal.
2) It also tacitly admits that I am smarter than they are.
Tell me HumanCattle, do you understand the concept of free will? Or do you believe me to be some kind of psychological mastermind who can "bait" users into saying things that aren't of their character?
By the way, 82 troofers banned to this date :) - RunningWolf, on 11/06/2008, -1/+5Anything with Obama in the title is making it to the front page of digg? Convenient? Right? I'm not American and I'm burying this because he's the lesser of 2 evils, in my opinion.
Carbon tax is coming. They honestly wanna list Carbon Dioxide as a polutant. FFS Plants breathe it. It's a joke.
Didn't matter who won this election. They're both BOUGHT AND PAID for by the same people.
He's talking about "CHANGE".
Real Change is scrapping the Patriot Act, The Bail-out Bill and revoking the executive orders Bush signed to give himself more power. - mcsenget, on 11/06/2008, -1/+5How Tobias Funke Accidentally Blue Himself WOOT
- Barackalypse, on 11/06/2008, -3/+7You really shouldn't say that when we're talking about a Government that maintains an island detention camp for people who have never been formally tried for anything.
- eivi, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4Don't you understand that no amount of money can bring back stable ecosystems, endangered species, a stable climate, ground water supplies, fish stocks or the thousands of other vital things that are obscured by the general term "green issues". Money don't grow on trees, but trees can't be made from money either.
- whiteguysamurai, on 11/06/2008, -5/+8I hope he silences all his doubters.
- goodinohio, on 11/06/2008, -4/+7More Captain Planet nonsense.
- Askee, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3Also no matter than the top ~6% makes ~30% of the money...
- 2of8, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4Where do you get "5 years or more" to make a return on the investment? Average cost of electricity: $0.11/kWh (http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epm/table ...
Fluorescent lights consume are about 15 W. Incandescent - 60 W.
Assuming you use a lightbulb for 2 hours a day, every day of the year - that's about $1.20 (2 hours *365 days *0.11 $ * 0.0015 W). Incandescent - $4.80.
Cost of 1 CFL = $2.50. Cost of 1 incandescent (I don't know, haven't bought these in years) - I trust you, at $0.25.
Fluorescents have a lifespan at least 10 times longer than incandescents. So, *all other factors being equal*, you've already equalized the cost of the two types. But ignoring that, you can pay for the cost of a fluorescent within one year of light [as in, not heavy] usage.
Note that the number of hours used goes up significantly for commercial and industrial applications, proving my point further. - Peabdog, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3New Jesus rocks! How long will it take him to accomplish all this? One, maybe two weeks? A month, tops. Then he can start curing cancer and doing something about my receding hairline.
- Bloake, on 11/06/2008, -4/+7Wow, America's actually going to finally do something about climate change?! Oh yeah, Bush is on his way out. YAY FOR PROGRESS!
- iwaterski, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4Don't forget fluorescent lights might save on energy cost, but they pollute the environment. Most people don't know that you can't just throw one away in the garbage. They have to be properly disposed of. This also goes for your specialized batteries that you put into your high bread cars. The mining of the raw material to make them is a lot worse that the exhaust a car put out. Plants can take CO2 in and turn it into O2 but they can't handle the hazardous chemicals that get into the environment from strip mining. One mans environmental friendliness is another pollution.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3I honestly think it will take time for us as a country to go green. Can we make cars that don't run on gas, sure. But will we? Will the car companies? Will the power at be let them and accomidate them without while at the same time sacrifice the billions of dollars they make of the cars and the oil they sell. I think that is the biggest challenge and I don't know if anyone can make all those changes in 4 years. It would be nice if it happened in the Obama era. I would be even more proud of him! If you'd like to see the election speech again, you can watch it here along with Oprah's reaction:

What is Digg?
