- openthink, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28 if this is subversive and illegal, we need lots more subversiveness!
- 0crabby0, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19I always grow too big of a garden, so I do something like this right now around the local courthouse.
I drive around the parking lot, and if I see a car or truck window open with no one inside. I place a bag of fresh excess vegetables in the seat with a note.
Zucchini, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, winter squash, watermelon and cantaloupe. That will teach you to leave your windows open...lol - Eska, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17You might think that it being illegal is dumb, but there might actually be a reason for it. What maintenance worker wants to have to crawl through sunflowers to fix a problem under that grate? And think about what some of the root systems are going to do. Look at the problems caused by tree roots and bush roots near water lines/sidewalks/roads. If the plant the wrong plant that causes physical damage, then the city/you the tax payer have to pay for repairs that would not normally be necessary. I agree that cities would be much nicer if they were greener, but I also think it needs to be done properly. I am sure some of the gorilla gardeners think things through and aren't going to plant a bush over a water line, but some will not. Maybe that is why its illegal.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13THEY'VE GOT TOPIARIES! OPEN FIRE!
- ilkeryoldas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12one plant at a time
- kablaaamo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12That's wonderful. I'd be so stoked to find a bag of fresh, free veggies in my car....such a nice thing to do!
- EztliNahua, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12http://www.duggmirror.com/environment/Guerilla_Gardening_A_Subversive_Way_to_Help_Save_the_Planet_pics/
- kablaaamo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Alright, I take the stance that culture jamming and all "subversive" related activities are pretty *****, mostly because in the end they're ineffective and irritating. BUT! I love this idea, and I have for a long time. It's kind of funny, and harms no one, results in some obvious positive change...pretty much a win-win all around.
- Nerys, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Yes but if tooting my own horn gets others interested in doing likewise ??? Cleaning up one yard does nothing really when you think about it. BUT Cleaning up one yard and inciting dozens or hundreds or even thousands to do likewise will do a LOT of good!!!
- alexforcefive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You haven't seen my giant lettuce heat shield
- spanishclaret, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8No it won't save the planet, but it will make it a more interesting place to live
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I think you meant "guerilla gardeners", not "gorilla gardeners". The gorilla is a species of primate.
- Elliuotatar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Your food's probably ending up in the trash. I wouldn't eat anything someone left in my car, even if it looked fresh. A nice gesture, but a fruitless one. (Ha!)
- AndrewJC, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I agree with the flowers in the drain, but as for your comment about root systems, I would argue that the root systems of flowers and garden vegetables are FAR less dangerous than the root systems of the weeds that currently grow in those places.
- jezmck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7tomatoes are fruit!
;) - L0t3k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I think these "subversive" folk ought to request trial-by-jury. Who in their right mind would convict for something like that?
- stupidStan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8like you are doing now?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I also grow more vegetables than I can eat. I usually give them out to all the neighbors, or my employees. I think that your idea is excellent, maybe I'll try it this weekend.
- StrangeFamous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Congragulations, you're a complete asshat.
- kevyn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5what freaking drugs are you on?
- CiXeL, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6plant fruit trees anywhere you can think of.
it will be sustenance if the economy falls apart.
also if tomatos grow very easily in your area. plant cherry tomatos everywhere you can think of where people wont pester them. - CiXeL, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5theres so much ugliness in the world. if you can make it even a little better why not?
- Nerys, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well I would also destroy them with biological weapons. ME and My Stomach :-) LOVE tomato sandwiches !!! Potato Break Tomato's Miracle Whip and salt :-) Yum Yum Yumm :-)
- way2jaded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Did you consider a local food bank that is always woefully short of fresh produce???
- dkruta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4you're an idiot.
- BOFH2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I am all for this but how about just asking? Most communities would allow this if you present it to them. I know here in Minneapolis MN they were asked and then fenced off an area for people to grow things. I am concerned with the flowers under the grate though, isn't that for drainage and if done on a large scale would that not defeat the purpose?
- Schda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I know our local community garden has a program where they donate the excess produce grown to local food shelves that go to the needy in the local neighborhood. From what I've heard food shelves really enjoy fresh produce and it's helps the needy add a bit more variety to their diet.
- StrangeFamous, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If you really have that much of an excess each harvest, why not go to the local farmer's market, or start your own? Set up a stand in town and sell for really cheap, or simply give them away to people who can't normally afford fresh veggies (considering that at present you're only giving to people who have cars, while there very well may be much poorer people living in the neighborhood)
- Duston, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Would you like directions to my office? Just let me go out and roll my windows down. Seriously if someone did that it would make my day. I love fresh vegetables.
- kd1s, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3A group did this where I live so I took photos. I knew that within a matter of a day or two most of it would be gone and I was correct.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kd1s/sets/72157600819927480/ - sdfjkln, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This is a really positive thing for public spaces where nothing is growing or trash is acummulating, but in that last time-lapse photo it looks like they remove plants that are apart of the fauna just so they can plant flowers. This probably isn't saving the planet as much as it is just making things pretty.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Google "edible landscaping". Using every scrap of land for food production is how they do it in other parts of the world, and it's high time that trend came back home.
- ChzPlz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What was there was most definitely not part of the fauna.
Fauna = animal life
Flora = plant life - inghamb87, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6I thought gardening was boring, meh. Dugg.
- CiXeL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2its a shame they cant get it down here. there are homeless migrants from haiti starving in miami.
- ostawookiee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Guerrilla Gardening saves the environment - until the city comes along and dumps a bunch of chemicals to kill off the sunflowers that are growing in the sewer grate.
- josegutz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The theme song for this type of debauchery should be
John Denver's "Plant a Tree" - NJank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2not simplistic, realistic. Evironmentalists aren't worried about 'saving the planet', it's about 'pereserving the planet for their own wellbeing'. seriously, it's all based in selfishness :P
- StudsTurkel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I know someone who runs a food shelf. They love getting fresh food (Trader Joe's donates A LOT) The only problem is that people don't take it fast enough. A lot of food ends up spoiling and going to waste, which is a damn shame.
- kkeith02, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I like to plant my seed wherever I go... is that illegal too?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Typically it's not illegal. Most cities have ordinances that require you request to plant on boulevards, etc. Most of the time they will allow it.
In Minneapolis we can request the city to plant a tree on pretty much any boulevard (as long as it is in front of your home) and they almost always comply at no charge (other than the taxes we already pay). - scoobycarolan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2awesome. I've got a great spot in mind
- Elliuotatar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Who would eat this stuff? I wouldn't eat anything that was grown in the middle of a city and assaulted by exhaust fumes all day long. That's both disgusting and bad for you.
- Schda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually I think he's referencing local roads which are in pretty bad repair.... I know parts of Lyndale that could use a little bit of repairing, and lots of lake street are getting fixed. I don't think he's referencing the 35W bridge rather local streets that have been neglected for many a year.
- Tweekster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Gardening is not illegal.
trespassing and modifying other people's property is. - magni, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Wow you must be working class. Let me guess, you work sooooo hard, more than most people, so you don't have any free time. Wait maybe you even have kids. now you are really busy. Impressive.
Everyone has free time. We all do with it what we want. - CiXeL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2in today's world johnny appleseed would be considered an eco-terrorist.
- haentz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Great concept :) I'd love to see more like this.
- YogiWanKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wrong thread. You running a GNU/Linux browser by chance?
