- Murdats, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8not really, giant server farms need massive amounts of energy, it would be better if that was clean energy.
- killhouse, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6I believe its to power their massive server farms.
- BrokenVisage, on 10/02/2008, -2/+7haw-haw, Google finally isn't the top doer of something.
- darkstar949, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6I'm a bit confused, are you talking about the company known as Cleantech (http://cleantech.com/), or the term cleantech (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleantech) which refers to "clean technology?" The article is talking about cleantech as "clean technology" not the actual company Cleantech.

"There's no question that nuclear power is the most climate-friendly industrial-scale energy source. You can worry about radioactive waste or proliferating weapons. You can complain about the high cost of construction and decommissioning. But the reality is that every serious effort at carbon accounting reaches the same conclusion: Nukes win. Only wind comes close — and that's when it's blowing. A UK government white paper last year factored in everything from uranium mining to plant decommissioning and determined that nuclear power emits 2 to 6 percent of the carbon per kilowatt-hour as natural gas, the cleanest of the fossil fuels."
And, there's no way to quickly transition to greener energy without using the carbon emitting energies we already have to put the greener ones in place. - acaloiar, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3With all of the renewable energy tax breaks currently available and in the works, it makes perfect sense for any large consumer of energy to "go green". Google's floating data center is also a fantastic idea to avert both taxes and energy costs. http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?com ...
- Murdats, on 10/02/2008, -1/+3so we are wanting to save the planet now, what do we do to fix this now?
work on implementing an existing solution on a larger scale, or work on implementing still expensive and developing solutions that have a large impact on a lot of people and that are not suitable for large parts of the world.
and why is coal burned to mine uranium? for electricity? well mining more uranium means less coal spent on mining it, unless you are talking about fuel or something, in which case mining more uranium means the ability to fuel more electric vehicles that run on uranium. - diggaaja, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2google has got those map programs i think they know what they are doing
- nerendir, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Good to see some action being taken on clean energy
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2"Still, we’re pretty sure Google is nowhere near the top when it comes to the actual dollar amounts spent on cleantech investing."
So....WTF are you talking about?
Oh....by the way....the BIG EVIL OIL companies are by FAR #1 in terms of $$$ invested. - kwasmosis, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Are you saying having maps equals environmental responsibility experience?
Nice, I agree. - DeusNova, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1This is just part of their plan to rule the world.
- cgruber, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1I wonder if that offsets the waste they create by using vast amounts of commodity pcs.

Wishes,
www.icareearth.org - diggaaja, on 10/02/2008, -1/+0search engine help me every day. im happy when somebody invest in technology so much money...
- samotage, on 10/02/2008, -5/+1It's kind of peculiar when a search engine invest in clean technology...
- anniegarrison, on 10/01/2008, -16/+9Cleantech is a disgusting organization pretending to have something to do with sustainable power. What they're really about is making money on lies like clean coal and "carbon free nuclear"--MY ASSl; nuclear causes global warming, if you consider the cycle from beginning to end, starting with all the coal burned to mine uranium.
Once in awhile they'll talk solar or wind, but if so, it's only big, concentrated solar and wind---not distributed power, energetic or political. No surprise that Google is so heavily invested in them. I'm sure Big Al Giore is too.,
