- brettuthius, on 03/30/2009, -1/+108Who knew that putting a light bulb inside a shuttlecock would be so efficient?
- adremali, on 03/30/2009, -17/+116for 120 bucks i have to say...***** the earth.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -8/+102wow 120 for some $2 LEDs
I hope the chinese make fake ones for $10 and put these crooks out of business. - habkb, on 03/30/2009, -2/+79How much energy does it take to make one?
- PacificStandard, on 03/30/2009, -6/+77120 bucks?!? Geobulb, you're *****' out,
- Jeremyz0r, on 03/30/2009, -6/+70I've come here to inform you of the benefits in purchasing a Mac.
- Lykil, on 03/30/2009, -1/+43Unfortunately, most people never ask this question
- donnytomas, on 03/30/2009, -14/+54$120??? Just for that I'm gonna have to pour my used motor oil down the storm drain again in protest. You green bastards better knock it off before I destroy this planet.
- Vorg, on 03/30/2009, -0/+27***** i dropped it!
- TheMachine1, on 03/30/2009, -3/+30I think you can get 60 W equivalent CFL for $2-$3 each. That use 13 watts of power and last 8000 hours. At 10 cents per Kilowatt Hour; you will save $38.00 a year compared to incandescent bulb. So I assume 47 watts /$38.00 = roughly $1.24 watt a year. So that 8 wattt LED saves compared to CFL (13 - 8) * $1.24 = $6.20 a year.
So over 10 years figuring I might need 2-3 new CFL that works out to about $71 more than the LED to operate/maintain. But the LED cost $120 so the CFL is about $50 cheaper. - scimanal, on 03/30/2009, -1/+25And also cost 600x more than a shuttlecock?
- threon, on 03/30/2009, -2/+24$120 buys a lot of candles.
- noahgelman, on 03/30/2009, -2/+24Regardless of price, thats a bad ass looking lightbulb
- TheMachine1, on 03/30/2009, -0/+20Math Fail;
$38 / 47 = 0.81 cents a watt. Article says 7.5 watts so ;
(13 - 7.5) * 0.81 = $4.46 a year more to operate CFL yearly. So thats $53.60 ( 3 x $3 replacements)more to operate the CFL. So 120 - $53.60 = $66.40 cheaper to buy, operate , maintain CFL compared to the LED. - NUMBER4940, on 03/30/2009, -2/+22GeoCrazy if you gon' pay $120 for a light bulb
- Devilboy666, on 03/30/2009, -0/+18Ok now you're just posting so you can mention 'shuttlecock'.
- FreeTalkLIve, on 03/30/2009, -2/+18But, can I grow marijuana with it?
- coolchu001, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14Not exactly $2 or as good as this 8w $120 bulb here but its a start....
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10628 - Battlecry, on 03/30/2009, -2/+16I like that companies are still trying to go with LED, but I can buy a 15w CFL for a buck.
That bulb looks amazing, though. It's a work of art. - GraceHead, on 03/30/2009, -1/+14What does this have to do with marijuana legalization?
- avdp, on 03/30/2009, -2/+14OK, 11 times longer? Great. I'll pay $11 for it then. Oh, and electricity savings, got it - I'd pay $20 for it.
It costs $120? Yikes! - Metalcard, on 03/30/2009, -1/+11Or go ahead and get a ZetaLux for $50 Not sure if the specs are the same or even similar for that matter, if not, bury me.
http://www.earthled.com/index.html - jcharak58, on 03/30/2009, -1/+10Though it has a lifespan of 10,000 hours instead of the 900 hours a typical bulb (11.1111... times longer)
http://electrical.about.com/od/troubleshootingelec ...
Now take that plus using 1/8 of the electricity and the numbers look slightly better.
One also has to remember that when bulbs start lasting 10+ years instead of a year there is a huge drop in sales and they are going to make up for it - garrettg84, on 03/30/2009, -1/+10@devilboy666, whats wrong with posting just to say shuttlecock? Shuttlecock is a pretty entertaining word. How many times could you say shuttlecock in a digg post?
If Sarah Palin saw this, I think she would miss the point. - wiirdo, on 03/30/2009, -1/+9I love Mother Earth, but not at that price.
- jbob2000, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8Over 9000.
- mohsenxp, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8Absolute rip off.
This technology already exists and is available in the UK. You can buy a bulb for around £8. Still expensive but not $120 expensive. - indymike, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8This is the future, but it's a little STUPID EXPENSIVE for right now.
- troon, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8That 10W LED probably puts out around 600lm, making it comparable to a 40-60W incandescent.
- pacman122, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7Someone has been watching Eastbound and Down last night.
- jeffiek, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7This is why it is good to have rich people.
They spend money on such stuff. Those sales fund further development. The improvements reduce the price. Then the not-so-rich get in the act.
They spend money on such stuff. Those sales fund further development. The improvements reduce the price.
Then I get neat stuff at really good prices. Remember those HDTVs for $10k (late '90's) ? - nate007, on 03/30/2009, -5/+12hmmm... ***** that!
- jasdf, on 03/30/2009, -1/+8I love it when people accuse others of being stupid. It usually turns out so well.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7I believe Moonraker had a scene involving a shuttlecock..
- Lacrossedragon, on 03/30/2009, -3/+10Why does the bulb have stretch marks?
- Y0tsuya, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7For $20 I can get a SSC P7 LED that uses 10W but puts out about (eyeballing it) 150W of light. Hook that up to a $5 power brick and a stick that on a scrap slab of aluminum and I've got something 2-3 as bright for 1/5 the cost.
- memper, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7You're gonna ruin a lot of light bulb jokes.
- stonewall123, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7I don't know why the cost is so high at this stage in the game. You can get really good 7W (50-60W equivalent) zetalux LED bulbs (uses new CREE tech) for about $50. I have a bunch and they work great...
http://store.earthled.com/collections/frontpage/pr ... - N256, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6Just wait another three years.
- jasdf, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6I never realized that glass in landfills was a concern, seems like about the most harmless thing you could possible discard into nature.
- Yage2006, on 03/30/2009, -1/+7What a great deal after 10 years it pays for itself.
- fudsak, on 03/30/2009, -0/+612W > 7.5W
It USES more energy. Please learn English, math and science :) - InetRoadkill, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6Two other bulbs to watch: One from a company called Vu1 and the other from PureSpectrum. The Vu1 bulb uses electron stimulated phosphor to produce light. Vu1 is keeping the details of their technology close to their vest for now.
The PureSpectrum bulb is a low mercury CFL with an improved ballast which greatly improves the power factor and dimmability while keeping the cost inline with existing non-dimmable CFLs. PureSprectrum is also releasing a line of replacement ballasts to allow linear fluorescent tubes to be dimmed in sunlight harvesting applications.
Vu1 is expected to do a product rollout for Earth Day (April 22). PureSpectrum is waiting for its UL certification which is expected in the next couple of weeks. - MrChunks, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6That's not a nice thing to say, because the earth is a sacred thing that people need to protect. Every little bit helps and if you don't spend the extra, tiny bit of money then you will suffer more in the end. My friend told me the world only has 20 years left, if people keep up the level of pollution. But I don't know. Global warming in general might be a hoax but I am keeping my mind free and open to different ideas, and you should too. Don't ever ever disrespect the earth because of karma - "What goes around comes around...", like my friend said.

$120 please. - Fartbandit, on 03/30/2009, -5/+11insightful question is insightful.
- donnytomas, on 03/30/2009, -5/+11Oooops...I just poured a couple quarts of dirty paint thinner down the sink and gave a delicious bowl of used anti-freeze to your dog.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6Seriously. How long would it take for this thing to "pay for itself"??
- Frostman3D, on 03/30/2009, -1/+6$120 for a lightbulb? Obama was right! Green technology will save our economy. If everybody had a house full of these bulbs, the recession would be over.
- AlanCayce, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5Your comment caught me off guard, kudos. That is ***** funny.
- norman619, on 03/30/2009, -4/+9Even at half that it's too exp. They want us to replace our existing bulbs with this they need to price it like a regular bulb not try to get rich quick off of us.
