- DavidNiven, on 06/04/2009, -3/+9Goracle...call your office. It appears that dinosaurs had already taken out copyrights on this whole global warming nonsense including marketing rights. You're too late to try to cash in on the whole thing.
- ozydingo, on 06/04/2009, -2/+7BalancingAct,
Newton's Principia proves nothing other than its own mathematical self-consistency. However in no way does it "prove" that a mass exerts a force on any other mass proptional to the product of the masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the two.
Moreover, it has been shown that Newton's theory of gravity is inconsistent with modern scientific understanding and observations, which are resolved by taking special relativity into account.
The best we can do as simple observers of this universe is to show that observations are consistent (or inconsistent) with a theory. We can never "prove" a theory. If all observations ever recorded are consistent with a theory, it remains to be shown that a) all future observations will also be consistent with that theory, and b) no other theory would also be consistent with all observations. Both are quite impossible. - mejf2loy, on 06/04/2009, -8/+12What do Star Trek and global warming have in common? They're both fiction.
- catdawg555, on 06/04/2009, -6/+10awww bite my ass Al Gore
- greenfyre, on 06/03/2009, -12/+15Of course some populations adapt, which would be why there is still life on the earth, duh.
Many don't, which is why there were mass extinctions at times of severe climate disruption. Documented, known fact ... NOT speculation.
This article in NO way casts any doubt on the expectation of large scale extinctions if we experience rapid climate change ... how the hell they jumped to that conclusion? I have to assume it is the author of this popular article, because it is hard to imagine an actual biologist making such an absurd claim. - professor357, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2If we are to believe Al Gore [and less than 40% of the people do] about human caused global warming, than the idea that global warming happened in the prehistoric past is IMPOSSIBLE. Because if it HAD happened, then the runaway temperature scenario that is going to cause the destruction of all life on earth WOULD HAVE ALREADY HAPPENED.. and we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Greenpunk conveniently ignores any recognition that the earth was once warmer than today, with higher CO2 concentrations, at least once, and [more likely] multiple times in the past.
The message: Climate is cyclical between ice ages and warm periods, and the biosphere survives both. As intelligent human beings with scientific resources and the ability to utilize natural resources to the benefit of the planet, we are capable of mitigating these natural cycles much easier than prehistoric man. But we can't prevent climate from changing by CO2 controls, because that isn't what is CAUSING the warming [or cooling]. It's the warming [or cooling] that is causing the CO2 changes. - vikingcoder, on 06/04/2009, -5/+7"Gravity etc have been proven mathematically from first principles"
Really now. :))
Which first principles?
Nothing in science is *ever* proven. The best that can be said is that our current understanding has been validated. Ideology and bluster does not overturn that understanding. - greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -5/+7What do you think VC? I predict BS's next move is the "I tried to reason but you people are too brainwashed" cop out"? Any bets?
Come on BS, here's your chance to put me in my place, your chance to actually say something rational, a chance to show that for once you did have clue what you were talking about.
All it needs is one little link, just give us that link to a proof of gravity ... should be easy as pie, right? http://digg.com/environment/Fossil_Teeth_Hint_at_A ... - vikingcoder, on 06/03/2009, -12/+14Gee, who'd've thunk that the deniers would bash at a messenger with juvenile insults rather than discuss the message?
By the way...
Both terms, "climate change" and "global warming", are accurate. It is called "global warming" because the averaged temperature is rising. It is called "climate change" because the increased energy (i.e. temperature) won't affect all locales equally. "Climate change" isn't a new term; it's the IPCC, not IPGW & the first assessment report was released in 1990. It has been called "climate change" since 1975. http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=12181 http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/189 ...
"What's wrong with you?"
Are you really so pathetic that you feel compelled to whine and complain about another user's posting habits rather than reply to what they actually post?
Political ideology, prideful ignorance and bluster does not overturn the past 100+ years of accumulated scientific knowledge.
"Denier" isn't some sort of ad hominem slight, it is a descriptive term like skeptic. What else should you call somebody who denies knowledge presented to them based on nothing more than belief? - IMTheSupervisor, on 06/04/2009, -1/+3Thompson's Teeth -- The only teeth that can eat other teeth!
- TNsmokyjoe, on 06/03/2009, -13/+15What? there was climate change before humans? NO Way? I thought man was the cause of all this Global Warming.. excuse me, Climate change. Change you can believe in!
- greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -5/+7"Gravity etc have been proven"
LMAO ... you are such a joke
Ok genius ... give us the links. Link us to these proofs that don't exist. Should be simple (according to you), 30 sec with google, right?
So give us the links to proofs published in scientific literature. - Ferretman, on 06/21/2009, -1/+3Yeah, all he's got are his three or four logins and his list of out-dated and dis-proven blog links.
Don't worry--people who work are probably supporting his latte-driven Starbucks-centered lifestyle.... - s10stealth, on 06/04/2009, -3/+5Fossil... Teeth...
Um, I don't recall any cars/industry/smog being mentioned in any history books or cave drawings.
How did global warming happen?

Go right ahead and deny objective reality to suit your ideology and desires though. Why are you any different than a creationist? - vikingcoder, on 06/04/2009, -1/+3"politically driven theoretical science"
Theoretical science?
http://notjustatheory.com/
Your political ideology does not determine whether science is "hard" or not. - greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -5/+7Still no proofs? What's the matter? having trouble finding them? But you said....
Come on BS, ... proofs ... give the links to the proofs
Put up or shut up
and I'm linking this thread for the next time you try to pull this stupidity off, so you'd better shine bright boy, your on stage now! - greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -5/+7I am perfectly aware of Newton's Principia. Lovely piece of work, no question.
Now where is the link to a proof?
LMAO ... you're just going to keep digging yourself in deeper rather than admit what is obvious to everyone, that you never had a clue what you're talking about.
Come on BS, link to a proof. ... all you have to to is copy paste ... not that hard - MiddleAmerica, on 06/04/2009, -4/+5
Yeah, we'll really adapt when there's not enough food.
Between climate change & overpopulation, the adaptation period is going to be beyond grim.
- Ferretman, on 06/21/2009, -1/+2Typical Warmite tactics, using insult to divert the discussion.
Reminds me of the old Soviet gulag--dissenters were automatically sent to psych wards since they *obviously* were crazy by the very fact that they dissented.
It's the standard pseudo-intellectual put-down. Ridiculing someone who disagrees is always easier than actually supporting a position with a rational argument. - greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -6/+7Gee, being informed and concerned about the biggest issue of our time is not having a life?
Hello! get a brain - greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -6/+7Ahhh BA, as full of nonsense as ever:
Please, direct us simple ones to the scientific proofs of:
1) gravity
2) thermodynamics
3) the existance of atoms
4) any damn thing you please
because of course science threw away the fiction of proofs 50 yrs ago, so your demand for proofs is either you parading your own ignorance again, or an attempt to mislead others.
Either way, once again you waste everyone's time with idiotic and irrelevant points. - dwalker, on 06/04/2009, -2/+3You could not be more wrong!
There are loads of REAL WORLD products developed from the wild ideas introduced by Star Trek:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&client=fi ...
To understand global warming you have to take a step back from your miniscule life span and consider your own life just as a MINOR segment of the Earths time span...
Sad fact is that you young uns appear to be too ignorant to get it! - Ferretman, on 06/21/2009, -2/+3You're overreading it, rather defensively.
The article is intended to be a positive, encouraging look at adaptation in the animal world. IF global warming is happening (possible since we're still emerging from the last Ice Age), whether it's because of Mankind or not--the POINT is that animal (and to a lesser extent vegetable) life is and can adapt to the changes.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. - greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -2/+3How did someone get so dense that they actually imagine scientists don't understand historic climate change and have accounted for it in the science?

Our school system is obviously seriously screwed - greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -8/+9All of that writing to say absolutely nothing, what a total waste of time ... read a book, go outside, get a life!
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -1/+2Global warming alarmism is being debunked at every turn.
http://hamptonroads.com.nyud.net/2009/06/global-wa ... - greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -5/+5Been over two hours since you were asked for that proof ... should have been 30 seconds.
S'matter BS? your internet down? google not working for you?
Where's that proof BS? put up or shut up. - ozydingo, on 06/04/2009, -4/+4What? A phenomenon can have more than one possible cause? NO Way? I thought one was the highest number in the whole wide world! Money-grubbing scientists!
- Opiate, on 06/04/2009, -2/+2Science, politics and corruption are not exclusive of each other. Hard science vs politically driven theoretical science.
- vbullinger, on 06/03/2009, -13/+13Gee, who'd've thunk that greenfyre would end up being the first poster on an article about global warming?
Seriously, dude: do you have a job? Do you have a life? Why must you propagandize this ONE issue, constantly?!?
This douchenozzle shows up to any thread that's even TANGENTIALLY related to global warming/climate change/whatever they're calling it now and only pipes up about the connections between the topic and his one issue.
Seriously, I can't imagine anyone behaving like this, even if they were the CEO of a company and just posting on topics about their products. What's wrong with you? Read a book! Go outside! - greenfyre, on 06/04/2009, -6/+6Now now Ozy, there you go talking about facts and reality and stuff ;-)
For those curious about it (like BA should have been), it's due to the problem of Induction
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Popper#Problem_o ...
Curiosity + literacy + ability to learn can save YOU from the embarrassment of being a climate change Denier ... ;-) - BalancingAct, on 06/04/2009, -5/+5Cut the crap.
Show me where it says that that extinction events caused by climate disruption are proven facts? - greenfyre, on 06/03/2009, -12/+12Typical Denier stupidity trying to suggest that climate scientists claim all climate change is due to humans. Total ***** of course, like the entire Denier canon.
Spare us the inane comments and get a clue
The Real Climate Collection including “For complete beginners:”
http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2007 ... - Ferretman, on 06/21/2009, -1/+1So out of curiousity, if "Denier" is the same as "skeptic" why do you insist on using an emotionally-laden term rather than the more accurate and civilized one?
- inactive, on 09/13/2009, -2/+2Bing-O
- greenfyre, on 06/05/2009, -5/+5Looks like BA has abandoned us ... or maybe he's still looking for that link :-D
- Ferretman, on 06/21/2009, -1/+1Wait--you mean Star Trek isn't a documentary?!?
Frak me..... - TheMoniker, on 06/05/2009, -4/+4Looks like. While he's pretty good at saying incredibly stupid things in the face of all evidence to the contrary and feigning smugness about it, even he probably has realized, on some level, how much of his foot is in his mouth here.
- BalancingAct, on 06/04/2009, -6/+5"which is why there were mass extinctions at times of severe climate disruption. Documented, known fact ... NOT speculation."
Which extinction events have been proven AS FACTS to be due to "climate disruption"? Note that the Ordovician extinction event was strongly suggested to be due to massive cooling caused by Gondwanaland supercontinent covering one of the poles, but it's cause is still only a theory.
You will forever remain an ignoramus, greenfyre, with your current mindset. You consistently state theories as facts. - greenfyre, on 06/06/2009, -4/+3Foot?
last I checked he had stuffed his entire body up to his own neck in, and was still trying for more ;-) - BalancingAct, on 06/04/2009, -8/+6Nice try, but an epic fail.
I'll start you off. Here's Newton's Principia:
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Tm0FAAAAQAAJ&am ...
Now show me a credible alternative that has been put forward which has been accepted as a possible alternative?
And then, you can show me where you got the information from that extinction events caused by climate disruption are proven facts - BalancingAct, on 06/04/2009, -8/+6"Nothing in science is *ever* proven."
You forgot to read where i said: "and are established as facts with no valid alternatives having been put forward." - BalancingAct, on 06/04/2009, -8/+6vikingcoder
I never deny objective reality, but you do...often. Next time, learn to read what people have written.
I said proven AS FACTS. - BalancingAct, on 06/04/2009, -7/+5Yawn. See my link to Newton's Principia 4 posts up that you selectively chose not to see.
Meanwhile, i'm still waiting for you to show me where it says that that extinction events caused by climate disruption are proven facts.
Don't worry, nobody is holding their breathe. - BalancingAct, on 06/04/2009, -8/+3Gravity etc have been proven mathematically from first principles, and are established as facts with no valid alternatives having been put forward.
You said the extinction events caused by climate disruption are proven facts. Where did you get the information from that they are actual facts? If they are, only you knows about them.
