- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+57good to know all that ***** isn't going to waste.
- jbittle, on 09/11/2008, -1/+34(insert clever ***** joke)
- DeFex, on 09/11/2008, -1/+24they should do it in Washington they have a large excess of ***** there.
- gtluke, on 09/11/2008, -3/+13this is incredibly stupid. i work in the wastewater business and i work at a LOT of plants in NYC who extract the methane and run the boilers and even produce the plant's own electrical power with the ***** that flows in.
hell one of them has been doing it for 40+ years - getjustin, on 09/11/2008, -1/+11With all the Mexican food consumed in that city, they will have no problem brewing up the ol' Methane.
- digjam, on 09/11/2008, -1/+10makes sense...gas n ***** do go together
- gtluke, on 09/11/2008, -1/+10i'm saying the article is stupid because its claiming this is something new when its faaaar from that.
- theshrew4, on 09/11/2008, -2/+10Who run Bartertown now?
- sildude, on 09/11/2008, -0/+8Master Blaster runs Bartertown!
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+7It's probably because your stereotypes are completely wrong. Texas also has the most wind power in the country. We generally do stuff because it's economical, not because it's environmental.
- catfish182, on 09/11/2008, -1/+8thank you for the post. it was a good read. but i see you changed the title.
it was 'The First City in the U.S. to Make Natural Gas from Our Poop'. you changed it to *****. thats not a problem except for the fact that you censored yourself by typing sh*t. What the ***** is wrong? you wanted to say ***** but you couldn't? what the hell man is comcast your ISP?
if you are going to put ***** in then ***** type *****. you are better then this. - bm2xv, on 09/11/2008, -2/+8Natural gas from *****...
Now they need to invent a trash to energy device to power my Delorean. - gtluke, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6yes, there are plants that convert it to service grade gas and put it into the system.
i actually had a discussion last week with a DEP engineer about this. his quote was "its the only part of the city government that MAKES money" - Snowy, on 09/11/2008, -1/+7Talk about doing your civic *duty* ;)
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -2/+8Great to see San Antonio slouching toward a future as 'Bartertown'.
- kmb1794, on 09/11/2008, -1/+7I think this is really making energy from Mexican food...which accounts for 90% of San Antonio *****.
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5I guess you didn't read the title. It says, "First City in the U.S..." Not the world.
- Rhendal, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5"This natual gas is created from the finest ***** from the folks in San Antonio."
"Why, this other ***** is made in...New York City."
"NEW YORK CITY?!?!?!"
"Get a rope." - cgbspender, on 09/11/2008, -0/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenkem
- samuraiswordsmn, on 09/11/2008, -0/+4Who runs BarterTown?
- forcedfx, on 09/11/2008, -0/+4You didn't read the title either huh?
- Caliente, on 09/11/2008, -5/+9eh hehe *natural* gas.
- TheAlkhemist, on 09/11/2008, -2/+5In related news, mandatory fiber requirements on grocery food at an all time high in San Antonio, Texas.
- skeptic2525, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3Not just NYC, waste water treatment plants across the country have been doing it for years.
- mysticalone, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3They sell em at Wal-Mart, ask a representative about Mr. Fusion.
- darny, on 09/11/2008, -1/+4so if you're saying it works, why are you saying it's stupid?
- sevvo, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3Embargo!
- DrunkenPirate34, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3I used to guard a "rubbish dump" about a year ago. They harvested all of the methane from the rotting trash and guess what they did with it...?
Nothing, they burnt it in giant "flares". What a waste. - DrunkenPirate34, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3They ferment ***** and then inhale the fumes... Gross.
- AnAfricanOnline, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3Come collect ours we have large amount of Sh*t flowing in our streets, and do whatever with it: http://images.google.com/images?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8& ...
- JGUSMC7, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3You should see what we eat here, we make tons of bio solids.
- pinstripewizard, on 09/11/2008, -2/+5Who gives a *****?Aparently texans.
- reyalp, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2since we're posting loosely related blurbs:
Biogas typically refers to a gas produced by the biological breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Biogas originates from biogenic material and is a type of biofuel. One type of biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable materials such as biomass, manure or sewage, municipal waste, and energy crops. This type of biogas comprises primarily methane and carbon dioxide. The other principal type of biogas is wood gas which is created by gasification of wood or other biomass. This type of biogas is comprised primarily of nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide, with trace amounts of methane. - josher565, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2the excrement doesn't entirely turn into gas. Come on, think about it
- borez, on 09/11/2008, -2/+4clever *****
- elfprince13, on 09/11/2008, -2/+4Vermont's been doing this with cow manure for AGES. and then using it for electrical generation.and as someone said above, other places have been doing it with human excrement for years. buried for inaccurate.
- craznar, on 09/11/2008, -2/+4Just think - they could make 25% more with *****.
- Taquoshi, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2All witty comments aside, I don't doubt that other countries and towns have been using this process, but my question is what does the process cost versus the cost of the product? And what would be the cost of replacing all those toilets? Who will pay for that?
For instance, ethanol was supposed to be the answer to the gas crisis because we could "grow" our own corn or grain or whatever. Turns out that the ethanol is more expensive to produce than gas, there's been a shortage of food because of it in other parts of the world and it's not necessarily good for one's car engine. - dotcomet, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2WTF I'm from San Antonio...I want some compensation for my *****.
- nofate2029, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2Great idea in my opinion. There's an abundance of human waste to be used.
- josher565, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2yeah, this is by no means new. It just shows a lack of imagination by people who manage wastewater. Every municipality could turn a profit on this just by retrofitting their wastewater facilities. You can even buy a "digester" if you happen to have livestock and run a small Caterpillar generator behind it and in Ontario Canada, they'll pay you a premium for the renewable energy that you sell back to the grid!!
- TheInformer, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2Washington DC would be the best place for raw materials.
- rotten777, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2I'm not sure how much a Texas city needs to burn to keep warm.....................
- SuperCujo, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2The Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment plant in Western Australia produces enough biogas to make itself energy self sufficient. It also produces tonnes of material for enriching soils (after being processed in anaerobic conditions) and water suitable for industrial reuse.
- OfficialJoe, on 09/11/2008, -1/+3"I got gas"
Oh yes you do... - drex8, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2You Dirty Piece of BioSolid !
- YoctoYotta, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2Poop comes from butts
- ontain, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2Considering how fat the average American is this would be an abundant natural resource.
- DrunkenPirate34, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2No. Most places that don't harness the methane just simply burn it off in flares or torches. They have been doing it for years.
