- DeskFlyer, on 02/13/2008, -0/+13I think New Jersey is quite apt given the subject matter.
- civilizedevil, on 02/13/2008, -2/+14If you're trying to gain sympathy for an environment being killed, don't compare it to New Jersey.
- schavira, on 02/13/2008, -1/+12You could have just said 'Fertilizers Etc. Turning Ocean into New Jersey".
- allaboutdatiki, on 02/13/2008, -1/+9Lets install some giant filters to vacuum all the crap out of the water and use the filtered minerals as fertilizer one mo time ...
- ...---..., on 02/13/2008, -0/+7well, the natural flora and fauna of that ecosystem can no longer survive there. Instead of active fisheries and the ecosystem that supports it, you have algae, pea green water, loads of bacteria and probably crustaceans that can live in the ooze. So, maybe dying isn't the right word here - there IS life - just not at all like it used to be.
- earlycj5, on 02/14/2008, -0/+6I gotta say, growing up on a farm, and being a researcher in an Agricultural related field, I'm puzzled by this.
Why are we letting so much fertilizer get away?
Nitrogen is EXPENSIVE! Anything that can be done to keep it stabilized so it doesn't leach should be done.
Phosphorus is more tricky, it runs off pretty easily and if you have livestock you likely don't have a shortage of P.
Though the other thing that's not mentioned here that I've seen other places is fertilizer waste from golf courses, and homeowners' lawns. It's probably not to the same scale, this article seems to be getting at P more than N but it never says that for sure. But mentioning animals and pasture runoff and lagoons, P is what comes to my mind first.
Plenty of blame to go around unfortunately. - drunkenirish, on 02/13/2008, -1/+6Even when we're not the ones doing the polluting, we still get roped into it!
- kelchm, on 02/14/2008, -1/+6Man, New Jersey is one giant piece of *****.
Wait, this has nothing to do with New Jersey??? It's still a giant piece of *****. - Wosat, on 02/13/2008, -1/+6But bio-fuel is going to save the environment... pffft.
- inactive, on 02/13/2008, -2/+6It seems like someone needs to do something! I would really like my great grand kids to enjoy the oceans!
- theelectricafro, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4Wow a real environmental issue that doesn't have anything to do with global warming? Is anyone out there gonna complain about the waste from the fertilizer industry being used as an additive to toothpaste? You know that sodium fluoride. Where did you think it came from? Go ahead and google it before you decide to digg +/-. Its not even FDA approved. It is actually forced mass medication in contradiction to informed consent. It is illegal by that medical standard. Mad? No? Its probably just the fluoride.
- Tamriel, on 02/13/2008, -1/+5My guess is that most of the crap is accumulated and just sits there over the year. Winter comes and by the end of the season, when the snow is melting like crazy, the runoff is the most toxic.
- Tamriel, on 02/13/2008, -0/+4Give it another two weeks. You never know.
- uncwidiot, on 02/13/2008, -1/+4I think we should filter the fertilizers out to kill a New Jersey-sized swath of New Jersey.
- epalla, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2Jersey's not that big...
- bjornski, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2The worst part is the actual large chunk of the population that actually thinks this way.
I've given up hope on people entirely. I've divorced (won't re-marry), won't tie myself into a mortgage, don't have any "investments", and refuse to have children (bring them into THIS? Are you ***** kidding?).
People's attitudes and actions have gotten SO disgusting, that no, it's not worth breeding anymore. Go ahead, use up that gas. Drive really fast. Burn up those resources. You don't care, you'll be dead when your kids feel the crunch. You're leaving a legacy of *****, but as long as you "have fun", I guess nobody cares.
So go ahead. Burn up those resources. Poison the environment. Wage war for profit.
I've stopped giving a *****. - Apolloblue20, on 02/14/2008, -3/+5The problem will only get worse now that there's a government mandate to grow more corn and soy for biofuels.
- slvrbullet87, on 02/13/2008, -1/+3The snow isnt melting here in illinois, this week the average temperature was abut -90F(actually about 4F)
- HanSolo69, on 02/14/2008, -1/+3New Jersey killing New Jersey-sized swath of the United States.
- knowitman, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2Yeah, it's just that simple. Especially since the stuff is dissolved in the water.
- inactive, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2Runoff from animal waste is also to blame for E. Coli 0157:H7 contamination in spinach/lettuce crops, despite any attempts by the major media corps to pin the blame on Gasp! Illegal Immigrants crapping in the fields.
- unpolloloco, on 02/14/2008, -1/+3and corn-based ethanol is supposed to be good for the environment.................cellulosic may be an option, but we're not using cellulosic - we are using corn. can our government get any stupider??? (yes)
- Wosat, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2My guess would be that runoff is highest when the fields are bare.
- orlyfactor, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Everyone always hates on Jersey. If it's that bad, how come we have the highest population density? Ignorant bastards :P
- GeoBjorn, on 02/13/2008, -1/+2the ocean is *****... is this supposed to be news?
- inactive, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2christ you'd think someone would think of this, no? but then they wouldn't be able to buy and sell and waste all the petroleum that goes into making all that runoff...
- willrs, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2do people seriously make accounts with the sole purpose of being a douche bag?
- inactive, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1So does this mean that New Orleans is the anal sphincter of America?
- repmekevets, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2you're right, it would pull some carbon dioxide out of the air, and i stress SOME, but not enough to justify this dead zone. as the article suggests, a restoration of natural wetlands would pull large amounts of these minerals and waste out of the water while at the same time pulling large amounts of co2 out of the air. we could have both of those benefits while simultaneously allowing the fisheries to strive as well.
- clingingboy, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1yes, I think so
- inactive, on 02/13/2008, -3/+4It seems like every day we keep discover more evidence that our world is going to crap... Good things we're investing millions in space travel :)
- paganmonkeyboy, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2Well, if God didn't want us to breed, consume, and pollute then he shouldn't have given us dominion over the planet to abuse as we see fit.
- slvrbullet87, on 02/13/2008, -2/+3While i understand this happens, why in the hell would it be in feburary? There arent any crops in the fields, and most of the river is frozen over. So there shouldnt be much fertilizer flowing down south, even if it takes a few months to get there. Most fertilizer is used in may or june, it wouldnt take 8 months to get there.
- inactive, on 02/14/2008, -2/+2It's a shame they can't make it actually kill new jersey.
- scottykempf, on 02/13/2008, -2/+2We don't have any Fertilizers Etc. stores around here. LOL
- orlyfactor, on 02/14/2008, -1/+1and so are you.
- zugzub, on 02/14/2008, -0/+0It gets away because plants only use about 10% of chemical fertilizer. The fact is chemical fertilizer destroys the worms and microbes in the ground. Eventually you end up with serious ground compaction issues. Every year you see more farmers using sub soilers trying to break up hard pan. Every year you see more and more drainage tile being installed in fields that shouldn't need it. As a result the excess chemicals get into the ground water and into the tributaries that much easier.
The planet can only sustain so many people . In another 40 or 50 years theres going to be masses of people dying of starvation in every country in the world. Chemical farming while being a necessary evil is going to kill everyone some day. - lukehyper, on 02/16/2008, -1/+1hey pagan monkey boy, for your info, the original hebrew word which was then translated into "dominion" really means "gentle caring". Dominion was a poor choice for translation, and has had worldwide impacts as humankind hasn't been all that kind.
- albinorhino101, on 02/14/2008, -2/+1Garbage Killing a New Jersey Sized Swath of Land....oh wait
- sehomemariner, on 02/14/2008, -3/+2I learned about this stupid ***** in biology, in fact, that picture is from the textbook. It's more than seven states though. Twenty-four states drain into the Mississippi, dumb ass.
It's all because Texas ***** like to eat beef for every ***** meal. According to Alton Brown's Good Eats program:
1 out of 6 Americans have had ground beef in the last 24 hours. Whereas 1/2 of Texans have had beef in the last 24. ***** Texans should die! - Adenosine, on 02/13/2008, -6/+5So, wait a tick. The ocean isn't dying at all, it is actually becoming too productive with too much life. This story's a tad misleading. This author is just a life bigot; why are vertebrates so much more important than single celled organisms?! These algae blooms suck CO2 out of the air, scientists have actually suggested creating these blooms to reduce global warming!

- designer, on 02/14/2008, -3/+1This is what we care about? We don't care about our rights including the 2nd amendment?
- Asshole08, on 02/14/2008, -5/+2I DON'T GET YOU GUYS!
LET'S JUST DESTROY THE ENVIRONMENT RIGHT NOW!
WHO CARES ABOUT THE FUTURE! JUST LIVE FOR THE MOMENT AND EXPLOIT RESOURCES!
OUR GRANDCHILDREN WILL DIE, BUT WE'LL BE DEAD BY THEN!
NONE OF THIS MATTERS!!!!!!!!
HAVE A NICE DAY, *****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
