- StingingNettle, on 07/01/2008, -2/+24Nature strikes back!
- Birks, on 07/01/2008, -0/+20Hmmm... yea there is only one species that was actually thought to be extinct which was found again. The rest is "this MIGHT still be around" or extinct in the wild but re released from breeding programs.
the best quote is the African Manatee:
"African manatees, which scientists believe closely resemble West Indian manatees in both appearance and lifestyle, were considered by some to have become extinct by 2001. Since then, scientists argue this is no longer the case."
Huh? - caius15, on 07/01/2008, -7/+25" which led them to declare it extinct. However, hope was rekindled a year later when scientists claimed they may have spotted one."
so spotting ONE individual, is making that species reappearing altogether ?
buried as inaccurate. - iCoty, on 07/01/2008, -2/+20***** sapien
This is the last known photograph taken of a ***** sapien (circa 2012) . The pictured was recovered from the iPhone 6G of one of the last 100 remaining ***** sapiens to have survived the meteor shower. Although the ***** sapien has been classified as extinct, every so often there are claims that one is spotted. - snotrokit, on 07/01/2008, -0/+17maybe that is why they were extinct. They were tasty.
- inajeep, on 07/01/2008, -2/+18Misleading statement. They aren't coming back without help from biologists who release them back into the wild. Read through all of the photos. Some of the statements is 'they are thought to be coming back' with no proof. Just a bit of hearsay. The tiger pic above is staged.

- samukalra, on 07/01/2008, -1/+7FTA: "Although the South China tiger may no longer exist in the wild, here are some more creatures that were once thought to be extinct, but have since reappeared."
That's the only one that was staged. - mtschmie, on 07/01/2008, -0/+6All this article does is prove you can say anything if you use the words "people have claimed" or "might" at the correct spot in the sentence.

1. African manatees, were considered by some to have become extinct by 2001. Since then, scientists argue this is no longer the case.
2. However, in 2005 bird experts claimed that they had spotted the woodpecker in southeast Arkansas, according to the New York Times. Since then, scientists have wondered if the sighting may have been a case of mistaken identity.
3. In 2006, a team of foreign and Chinese scientists failed to find any trace of the endangered dolphin species during a six-week trip on China's Yangtze River, which led them to declare it extinct. However, hope was rekindled a year later when scientists claimed they may have spotted one.
4. However, four years later that same anthropologist said recent photos may prove the species still exists.
5.A few years later, the horse-like animal was considered extinct. Now a taxidermist in South Africa is working to bring the species back to life by breeding quagga-like zebras, according to the New York Times.
6. Although Tasmanian Tigers are officially considered extinct, every so often there are claims one has been spotted, including one instance in 2004
Words like "mistaken identity" "may prove" "claims" are not the words one would use for a definitive scientific assertion. Buried as inaccurate. - Vvolf, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Red Wolf has Little Red Riding Hood for lunch!
- Vvolf, on 07/01/2008, -1/+4The tiger shot was staged BUT most of the others it talked about were legit.
- frozenwookie, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3if you actually read the captions, alot of them are still extinct... what a shame, why can't we stop killing animals? i mean is it that hard?
- mlvassallo, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3More on the faking of the South China Tiger photos:
http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idU ... - biznatch11, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3National Geographic had a whole story about the Ivory-billed woodpecker about a year ago, and despite all the people who claim to have seen one in the past few years there's no actual evidence. Simliar to the few others on the list that are really old pictures, no actual proof. But good to see that the rest of them on the list are in fact surviving again.
- Clumber, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3In fact, those same US troops cannot seem to get away from the Quagga Mare. Almost as if they are trapped... stuck... enveloped...
(does that help any jdames1980 ? ) - Barbrady, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3The black-footed ferrets are cute. I hope the little furballs make a strong recovery.

- noswar45, on 07/01/2008, -1/+3Quagga Mare... giggity.
- milkmage, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2WRONG. the tiger in the pic is TigerWoods (zoo-bred), the staged picture is one taken by a farmer last year. It's not the one shown in the article.
read CAREFULLY:
"TigerWoods" is one of five zoo-bred South China tigers brought to the Laohu Valley reserve.
For nearly two decades the big cat was considered to be extinct in the wild; however, hope was rekindled in 2007 when a farmer photographed a South China tiger, according to The Canadian Press. Yet on July 1, local Chinese authorities revealed the photo had been staged by using a poster cutout. - HouseCentipede, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2dodo birds are legion
- Brad324, on 07/01/2008, -2/+4Extinction is part of nature. Nature created humans, and what we do is nature - like it or not. I really won't lose any sleep if there will no longer be a zebra-assed donkey roaming the fields of Africa. Is someone out there trying to collect all the animals like Pokemon or something?
