- attackfrog, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4Nearly all the bulbs in my house are CFLs, and fluorescent lights have been illuminating cubicles for decades. And if cow farts sound like a joke, just think about how many cows are raised to feed all those people at McDonalds, Burger King, your local grocery store, all the local grocery stores around the world, et cetera. That's a lot of farts, and methane is a greenhouse gas. This article is stupid.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Thanks, I've been looking for some info on this. Would like to hear from a good scientific source the impact of the in these bulbs mercury on the environment. BTW, the methane in cow farts is a significant contributor to global warming. Just facts, please.
- teeker95, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4Depends on where you live, and how your power is generated. For most locations in the US, the mercury released by power plants to power a conventional bulb is more than the mercury in the CFL (from the US DOE):

CFLs are not perfect, but are a step in the right direction until LEDs are good/cheap enough. It's a good idea to use them where appropriate, and make sure to recycle them when possible (many retailers will take them back). - apothekari, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4CO2 is also a "deadly poison" unless you are a plant.

- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Fluorescents have been around for decades! The amount of mercury is miniscule. They are recycled in any case, you do not eat them or throw them in your garden. They energy saved far outweighs any danger.
- obliviousfool, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Recycle them. You can take them to Home Depot.

"AND, CO2 is a life giving gas."
Unless you are a plant CO2 will kill you stone dead sir. - Coven, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1But I'm sure you have hardware stores or other big box retailers. You can recycle them there.
- LeeHarvey8, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2We don't have Home Depot in Italy. :(
- LeeHarvey8, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1I can't help it. They are so damned yummy.
- artwhite, on 12/01/2008, -2/+2CO2 is a life giving gas, mercury is a deadly poison. That's hard facts.
- LeeHarvey8, on 12/01/2008, -2/+2Saying cow farts are a significant contributor to global warming is like saying that two airliners could bring down two steel framed skyscrapers.
:)
I completely agree that water and air pollution IS man made. Factories, power plants, over stuffed landfills, etc...That needs fixed for sure. No doubt. No argument. I am concerned about the environment as much as the next human being. HOWEVER, to tax a farmer for something that occurs naturally in every living thing... is absurd.
AND, CO2 is a life giving gas.
