Drains of Canada (pics + interview)
bldgblog.blogspot.com — "Despite its subject matter, however, Vanishing Point is more than just another website about urban exploration. Cook's accounts of his journeys into the subterranean civic infrastructure of Canada and northern New York State – and into those regions' warehouses, factories, and crumbling hospitals – often include plans, elevations..."

- beta1, on 10/10/2007, -23/+4Those pics would make great desktop pictues, haha.
- MalDON, on 10/10/2007, -3/+51Those pics would be great in a Pics section...
- mydigga, on 10/10/2007, -9/+3Take off eh... hoser.

- archlich, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21I found them to be a bit draining.

- archlich, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21I found them to be a bit draining.
- lunchbox170, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32Man urban exploration and going into those drains and stuff would be crazy awesome. I love how they found a room full of abandoned cash registers, that's really cool.
Those are just water drains right? I think they are so it wouldn't even smell.- JesusPickle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1ya we have a few that we go in where im from and its just water drain off from storms
- sirber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2they aren't sewers, so it should only be humid.
- VelvetoneFusion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'd imagine that run-off, and the water sitting stagnant in the dark damp place for long periods of time would make a rather unpleasant smell.
- whoaohh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Agreed, but still not as bad as sewers.
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Wicked cool.
Exploring giant drain pipes was one of the highlights of my childhood.
That says something, I suppose. But I'm not sure I want to know what ... - jeffeb3, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3they are awfully clean for tredging around in the sewers.
- SleepingOrange, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3those are storm sewers, not sanitary. I work for a surveying company, and i much prefer the former to the latter.
- sonaboy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Outstanding.
- KMye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1my god, I just had a photorgasm.
- TWillz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20I never realized that I'm interested in Canadian drains, or drains from any country for that matter.
- Roger, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Speaking of Vanishing Point... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067927/
Good movie. - fullphaser, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2I don't care about the subject matter, a full page with decent pics on a webserver that can't really feel the digg effect? I'm digging it up simply for the fact this blogspam is decent looking, on a good single page, and not just a single picture.
- goblindegook, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9It's not blogspam. BLDGBLOG is one of the finest blogs on the web, the link goes to an interview they conducted with Michael Cook (as the title itself suggests, if you bothered to parse it).
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's on Blogspot, which is owned by Google, so I'm pretty sure they can handle the traffic :-)
- faz9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1His site, which is mentioned through out, www.vanishingpoint.ca seems to be suffering though.
- JFitzpatrick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23His photographs are beautiful. Urban exploration is one of the few things I miss from my single/pre-baby days... it doesn't seem very responsible to risk life and limb clambering around abandoned buildings and underground tunnels when I've got a wife and daughter to care for. Still... I do miss the thrill of finding new things, uncovering runs in old tunnel systems that hadn't been open for a century or more, etc. I had some great times in Chicago and Detroit going every where I wasn't supposed to be. And again... his pictures are just beautiful.
- dawgma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Wow, what an incredibly detailed article
- mattdanis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Those are some amazing pictures of places I never want to be.
- KillTheRhythm, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1These photos beat the last sewer photos submission.
- 7Mystery, on 10/10/2007, -8/+0I got the sudden need to have sex in those drains.
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28Draaiiiiins.....DRAAAAAAIIIIINS!!
- StevethePirate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7If only someone would write an article on the boards of Canada...
- whoaohh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3True that.
I remember misreading the title of this article and being super excited before I realized it wasn't about BoC.
http://digg.com/apple/Copyright_Board_of_Canada_gives_thumbs_up_to_iPod_tax
- whoaohh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3True that.
- Protoss, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3Meh, Boards of Canada are much more interesting....
- chubbybubba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+49I'm disappointed. Not one single picture of a ninja turtle.
- kutateli, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Those places are just a video game waiting to happen! ;)
- Namakemono, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The Darkness
- loganhid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3First pic of drain looks like the one of MGS 3 where snake is getting chased by dogs and guards
- smacksaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I have many complaints about the Digg submission system, what with the most popular users dominating the front page with mediocre content that you could get on FARK.com. However, I think watching Kevin is a good indicator of how it's done and what to submit. He doesn't always get everything put to the front page, and his articles aren't always as awesome as this one, but I think you can tell that he tries to hold himself to a higher standard for article submissions. There's more to Digg than being the first person to blog something from arstechnica and lifehack...use the force, zaibatsu.
- JEWestbrookJR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The red brick one towards the end reminds me of the sewer scene on Ghostbuster's 2 with that pink slime.
- Zackypooh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1o.o @ manhole pic
- sdigroup, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8For anyone who is calling this "blogspam" should be backhanded in the mouth. Posted stories like this on digg is what makes digg so interesting.
finding stories that you normally would not be thinking about. Great story and great pics!!- datastorageguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So if I call it extremely lame to think drains are interesting, will you backhand me in the mouth over the internets you e-thug you..
- supaklaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's blogspam when EVERY article on BoingBoing is posted on Digg within seconds and then Dugg up... people desperate to seem popular and clever who can't find news... it's what makes DIGG lame, when added to the PIC spamming of the site.
- BlackCow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A lot of those images reminded me of HL2.
- jimmiss, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Is anyone else thinking that those drains would have worked just as well if they were 1/50th of the size they are?
- jhuebel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Not if there's a significant storm. These drains prevent flash floods above ground. Consider yourself fortunate that they aren't smaller.
- crapmatic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0I fully support this, though I don't think it's such a good idea considering some company might randomly decide to release some noxious chemicals into the sewers, or drain a tank and suddenly immerse the sewers with 100,000 gallons of water.
- azntiger1000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Damn looks crazy underneath. I think it is really scary actually especially if there was a flash flood somewhere and tons of water starts rushing in the drains.
- Diggnationfan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It would be a kick ass water slide though don't you think?
Also I'm pretty sure he only goes on bright sunny, no chance of rain days.
- Diggnationfan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It would be a kick ass water slide though don't you think?
- wontstoptalking, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1WTF... Drains of Canada? This is what Digg has gone to?
- datastorageguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah it's no longer about relevant news it's about how many internet nerds you can get to digg your story no matter how lame it is. Jumped the shark for sure.
- xjbri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Reminds me of the water hazard level in Half Life 2.
Wish I had an air boat to go through these... - GaidinTS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Great pics, but the article was even more interesting. Brings new meaning to the "Urban Jungle".
- faz9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Every now and again a site comes along that reminds me why I come to digg. This is one of those sites.
- mrsneakypat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1One of those was like a giant waterslide.
- patch6, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2When you're bored enough to look at pictures of drains in Canada, it is probably time to re-evaluate your priorities.
- turnlikeawheel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I thought this would just be a bunch of pictures of Americans.
Badoom, pish!- IEatHamburgers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh and I suppose that Canadians can only benefit America, right? Perhaps you should take a look at this article, which also involves Canadian drains:

- IEatHamburgers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh and I suppose that Canadians can only benefit America, right? Perhaps you should take a look at this article, which also involves Canadian drains:
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I love big pipes!
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Drains of Canada would probably be useful reverb caverns for Boards of Canada. Or just a good knockoff name for a coverband that diggs ambient wizardry
- wing05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So there are storm run off drains, sewers and infrastructure for telecom?
There was an instance in the Toronto area a few weeks back where a couple of guys working on subterranean telecom died from some sort of gas that displaced the oxygen.
I wonder if these guys have to worry about it too. - ZephyrNinety, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Honestly, who ***** cares what section it's in? If you do, you are going through menopause.
- darkism, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Vanishing Point has long been one of my favorite UE sites. Congrats to Mike for the publicity and great interview!
- Shuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
- Eggding, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Canada now has appeal to me.
- FreakyPhil31, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Submitted by Kevin Rose in case no one noticed.
- datastorageguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ORLY
- Hensworth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Oh, wow a ***** sewer! I've never seen one photographed before!
- adamrgolf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2in the end its just full of *****
- DinX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1These must be the tubes that make up the internet.
- dwninjungleland, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1By 'drains', I thought that it meant, like, how canada is just basically a burden on everyone.
- thescimitar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This has got to be some of the best independent online editorial reportage I've seen in a long, long, long time.
- xrspencer4x, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1This IS NOT News
