- KamikazeeDriver, on 04/22/2008, -0/+281Why not human fat? As an organ donor, when I die, take the fat too. Make a bar of soap called, "Dave"
- Tinu, on 04/22/2008, -12/+174How embarrassing. Because I really liked how Dove was starting to change its image and some of the conversation about what's beautiful in a woman. Why wouldn't they make sure they are doing everything they can to be responsible on such a hot-button issue before doing a feel-good campaign? Or is the pursuit of profit not seen as a long-term picture?
- Wacer, on 04/22/2008, -13/+148Soap is either made from oil or fat. Animal lovers won't like the idea of animal fat being used, which beef fat makes one of the better bars of soap. Most oils end up only making really soft or liquid soap. For the most part, your choices are chopping down rain forests to make palm oil for soap or using beef tallow(fat). Unless of course you don't want to wash anymore.
- DeathJux, on 04/22/2008, -2/+113I think I get what you mean, but I've read what you've written about fifteen times and it breaks my brain.
- inactive, on 04/22/2008, -15/+111They're not trying to change jack *****. A lot of women are fat and dove wants them to buy their soap. This is a sound strategy since fat women need to bathe more often and have more body surface area to soap up, so they will need to purchase soap more often than slender women.
- therealkdog, on 04/22/2008, -1/+86Make it with human fat, there is enough to go around.
- vault, on 04/22/2008, -68/+150It's just soap, guys. You eco-Marxist hippies should try it one of these days.
- justinx0r, on 04/22/2008, -15/+78Greenpeace? The same people that made up lies about the Wii being toxic so they could get publicity?
- shanson13, on 04/22/2008, -2/+53The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
- cutething, on 04/22/2008, -1/+49I don't care if you're joking, this is an awesome position.
- AMSRay, on 04/22/2008, -8/+53Greenpeace should be talking to the countries who are doing the destruction and leave Unilever out of it. There are many other users of palm oil, especially in the food industry. These cash-poor, resource-rich countries are going to destroy their environment if we don't find a way to help them out that is environmentally sound. Do you think that if Unilever stopped buying palm oil today, Indonesia would stop cutting down the forests? No way. They will find someone else to sell to or something else to grow for sale. They make money from the wood they cut down, so there's still incentive to them to cut it down. I believe that Greenpeace just hates all corporations and it's more important to them to make people hate the corporations than it is to actually change the behavior of the people who are doing the actual damage.
- inactive, on 04/22/2008, -9/+53I didn't realize that even a bar of soap can have a heavy effect on the environment. I shall cherish every bubble my soap makes from now on.
- rendition, on 04/22/2008, -4/+43Cool. Looks just like the Dove ad, except about the environment.
- DarkPrince11, on 04/22/2008, -2/+390_o
- brock2020, on 04/22/2008, -3/+38he's not a hippie, why would a hippie own a bar of soap?
- bluesatin, on 04/22/2008, -0/+34I'm glad someone takes into account the 3 dimensional quantities in these types of situations.
- bboymouse, on 04/22/2008, -1/+29finally, someone who doesn't forget the "love of" part
- oboy, on 04/22/2008, -8/+35There's a video and a place where people can sign an open letter to Unilever. Please help.
- inactive, on 04/22/2008, -5/+31How about putting Virgin on that mailing-list as well.. their last green flight powered by biofuels came directly from palm oil and coconut oil - where did this oil come from.. probably Indonesia as well.
Virgin Atlantic became the first commercial airplane operator to fly a plane powered partially by palm tree oil this week. In a short but historic flight, one of the company's Boeing 747-400s flew more than 200 miles (320 kilometers) from London Heathrow Airport to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, reaching a peak altitude of 25,000 feet (7,600 meters) during the 40-minute flight, with one of its four engines burning a blend of 20 percent coconut and babassu oils mixed with regular petroleum-based jet fuel.
"This pioneering flight will enable those of us who are serious about reducing our carbon emissions to go on developing the fuels of the future," Sir Richard Branson, president of Virgin Atlantic, said in a statement. - metallica, on 04/22/2008, -2/+27Mr. Durden FTW!
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+24Dove's parent company, Unilever, is also the world's biggest ice cream maker. Ben & Jerry's is one of their brands. I'll leave you to connect this with that marketing campaign...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unilever#Brands
Jokes aside, they also make Axe body spray. Hence, they are also behind the Axe ad campaign. Try to square that up with the Dove ad campaign. - arjie, on 04/22/2008, -0/+24Here's my shot:
If it was only in Indonesia [it wouldn't be so bad]. Out there are a lot of companies that destroy our Earth. - Lasereth, on 04/22/2008, -1/+24I don't use Dove because I can go through a bar in a week. I swear that stuff disintegrates under water.
- TominAms, on 04/22/2008, -6/+29There are alternatives to palm oil from deforested land. Greenpeace wants Unilever to use it's massive buying power to change the way palm oil is produced for the better. Cosmetic makers like The Bodyshop and Lush are already using alternatives and UK supermarket Asda (owned by Wallmart) is already looking for solutions:
"I don't want to be associated with orang-utan habitat destruction,' said Chris Brown, Asda's head of sustainable sourcing. 'We can wait while committees pontificate, or say, ‘Let's get on with it’." - TripcodeMel, on 04/22/2008, -1/+23Real men use Lava soap anyways.
- K4ot1K, on 04/22/2008, -10/+31Too bad it was greenpeace, and not someone reputable that brought this out.
- nakani, on 04/22/2008, -8/+28This has nothing to do with Marxism, it's capitalism. Buy products you like from companies whose actions you support and they will become more successful.
- inactive, on 04/22/2008, -2/+21that's what i was hoping she'd say
- eburneodente, on 04/22/2008, -9/+28what a video! it's a spuff of one original spot from Dove isn't it? i can't remember now. Anyway if Greenpeace is right Unilever are really as**holes!
- giona, on 04/22/2008, -4/+22The original Dove add is on YouTube as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaH4y6ZjSfE
Greenpeace did a very nice work and got to the point. - MrFisty, on 04/22/2008, -0/+17Thank you, Capt Obvious.
- dhVyse, on 04/22/2008, -2/+18Palm Oil is renewable, but they usually deforest large ammounts of rainforest for where it will be grown. We really need a new way of getting this oil..
- Shadow120, on 04/22/2008, -17/+32Just because it's Greenpeace, I'm gonna switch to Dove. I like rainforests, but I HATE HIPPIES.
- GiggleStick, on 04/22/2008, -0/+14Actually, I think it was a single letter typo. The word "out" should be "but". Still poor sentence structure though.
- patricks, on 04/22/2008, -0/+13The past tense of spoof.
- edd17, on 04/22/2008, -0/+13A little punctuation can go a long way.
- centerblack, on 04/22/2008, -0/+11Something I think most people aren't realizing:
Palm oil comes from the fruit of the palm tree. The palms aren't being chopped down. What is happening is forest is being cleared so that there's more room for palm tree plantations.
Sorry, not directly related to your comment, but I wanted to try and get it near the top so maybe more people see it. - BobMysterioso, on 04/22/2008, -1/+12Not really. Most diggers are saying Dove? Dove? Never heard of it.. does it have an API? Can I run linux on it?
- bme98, on 04/22/2008, -0/+11lmao that would be a good financial idea from them. It would suck for buyers though. BTW I hate dove I use Irish Spring It feels good on my lucky charms.
- jackstack, on 04/22/2008, -0/+11what's a spuff?
- ryan850, on 04/22/2008, -0/+11Bravo Dave, bravo.
- Dermah, on 04/22/2008, -1/+11Hey! That's the poor and starving World Vision girl. I see she is branching out into environmental charity now...
- inactive, on 04/22/2008, -1/+11Lol hot button issue.
It's marketing. "You are all beautiful, buy dove." - charlietuna, on 04/22/2008, -0/+9Whoa now! I suspect these claims have some merit, but I also suspect that these forests would be destroyed just as quickly for the lumber alone. What is needed is a sustainability plan, most likely emphasizing tourism. It's an age old story, where poor countries sell their forests/minerals/women for money from the rich ones, and the answers are not as simple as using a different brand of soap.
- CedEx, on 04/22/2008, -0/+9That is a thorough analysis.
- k00k, on 04/22/2008, -5/+14Buy Local.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 04/22/2008, -1/+9Yeah those PETA videos shot inside a Mexican slaughter house really turned the world Vegan!
- Duositex, on 04/22/2008, -10/+18Palm oil is a renewable and sustainable resource. It's held to higher environmental standards than many other industries. Buried for being completely baseless and inaccurate.
- grazgar, on 04/22/2008, -0/+8This is the list of product:
Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate/Sodium C12-13 Pareth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Parfum, Lauryl Glucoside, Acrylates Copolymer, Camellia Sinensis, Cucumis Sativus, Sorbitol, Lactic Acid, Irea, Sodium Lactate, TEA- Lactate, Seine, Allantoin, Isopropyl Palmitate, Propylene Glycol, Glycol Distearate, Styrene / Acrylates Copolymer, Laureth-4, Sodium Chloride, Citrci Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Benzoic Acid, Sorbic Acid, Alpha-Isomethyl lonone, Benzyl Salicylate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Citronellol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, CI 42053, CI 47005."
Isopropyl palmitate is a palm oil based emollient, moisturizer, thickening agent, and anti-static. The chemical formula is CH3(CH2)14COOCH(CH3)2.
The Isopropyl Palmitate is used in cosmetics as a thickening agent and emollient. It is often used in moisturizes where it forms a thin layer and easily penetrates the skin. Isopropyl Palmitate can be derived from the palmitic acid in coconut oil. Isopropyl Palmitate is said to enhance silkiness in hair and skin. - Fungo, on 04/22/2008, -1/+9Just to throw this out there...
Regardless of whether or not Dove buys massive amounts of palm oil from Indonesia, the destruction would happen anyway. Currently, Indonesia is shifting to a palm oil biofuel economy, but by doing so, they're actually screwing themselves even more than they were before.
Oh, and Indonesia is the fastest deforesting nation in the world. -
